“That doesn’t explain how you ended up being Scarlett.”
“I’m getting there,” she said. “Anyway, I waited and I waited, and there was no one. I was twenty five and hadn’t had sex for seven years. I didn’t want to change really. I just wanted to pretend to be someone else for one vacation, to be the easy fun loving girl.”
Thank God, he thought.
“And how many men were you easy with?” He half teased.
She blushed.
“These are delicious pancakes, you’re a good cook.”
He chuckled at her feeble attempt at diversion. “How many men?”
“Ok, just you,” she said unable to hide her smile.
“Well good, so that means I WAS pretty special to you.”
“Yes, you were,” she said with a smile.
“And you were to me too.”
“Scarlett was special to you.”
“Scarlett IS you, you’re the same person and yes I fell a little for Scarlett, while we were on that island, long before the baby made its appearance.”
She stopped mid-mouthful. “Your Mom told you what I said.”
“She mentioned something honey and I’m glad she did.”
“Then how do I know you’re not just saying all this?”
“Because I don’t lie.”
She still looked hesitant.
“Skye?” He wished he could find the right words to convince her. “I’m going to tell you something.”
“What?”
“I love you and I can’t stand to be away from you. I don’t want to remember what it was like to go home alone.” She got up and put her arms around him and kissed him.
“Me either.”
He dug into his pocket and brought out a small velvet box. She opened her mouth and then closed it. Oh please let the timing be right, he thought. He opened it with a click and smiled.
“Will you marry me?”
“Who are you asking?” she asked cheekily.
“Hey! Both of you of course.”
“Then YES!” she squealed.

“Are you sorry we had a small wedding?” Shaun asked as he plonked his wife down on the sofa after carrying her over the threshold.
“No,” she said. “We had everyone there who mattered. Our families and my friends from school, soon to be YOUR friends from school.”
“And us.”
“And us,” she agreed.

Skye loved the house. Obviously with her apartment, she’d never had the space she had at this house. It was nowhere near as large as Shaun’s Mom’s house but it was bigger than the house she’d grown up in. The only problem with it was the fact that it had been minimally decorated if decorated at all. Shaun had never really bothered. He was happy for her to buy whatever she wanted. The house had been painted neutral colours before he moved in so all she’d had to do was buy new furniture. That counted for every room except the nursery. For that room she really wanted coloured walls.
They’d picked the room next to theirs as the obvious room to make into a nursery. Skye couldn’t wait to decorate it and there was only one thing that had stopped her so far, well two things. The first had been not knowing the baby’s sex, which made it difficult for her to choose a colour. The second had been the fact that her husband had suggested, very clearly, that she should leave it alone. He had some idea that it wasn’t safe for her to be climbing around with a can of paint in hand.
The fact that they were both on vacation had made it easy for her to do as she was told so far, as he was right there in the house. Her challenge came when Tom called him in to work for a meeting. Suddenly she was alone in a house with an empty nursery waiting to be painted. As luck would have it they’d found out the day before from a sonogram that they were having a little girl, so they had bought pink paint on the way home. Shaun had been going to paint it that day, until Tom called.
Skye paced up and down the living room looking at all the baby’s new stuff. Her pretty little dresses and other clothes. She looked lovingly at the artwork that she and Brenda had chosen and the lamps and photographs from Brenda’s attic, none of it could be put right until the room had been painted.
The paint was sitting on the floor, just waiting. Ground covers had been spread to cover the hardwood floors. The work was nearly done really, she thought. How hard could it be to just open the tin and slap a little paint on the wall? The roller tray was right there. All you did was pour some paint in there and stick the roller in. She looked at her watch. She could probably have at least a part of it done by the time Shaun got home. Once he saw she was fine, he’d be fine with it.

The meeting went longer than Shaun had planned and he was eager to get out of there and get home. Skye was due in four weeks and anything could happen. He wasn’t just thinking about an early birth. He was thinking more of her doing something silly. She wanted things finished and she wanted them done NOW.
That week she’d been worse than in her whole pregnancy, well since he’d found out. Even as far as demanding to know all of a sudden the sex of the baby. She hadn’t wanted to know up until that point but then yesterday out of the blue she’d decided that she wanted to buy things the RIGHT colour, she wanted to have the nursery done in the RIGHT colour. She even cried, that had been what finished him. She’d had him at the doctor’s office, then buying the paint and shopping for little tiny dresses before he could blink. She was nothing short of obsessed and he knew he couldn’t trust her as far as he could throw her.

In what could only be described as a painting frenzy, Skye worked. She had one wall coated as far as she could reach without climbing in a very short time so she moved on to the next. Pretty soon she’d managed to cover the entire four walls a little higher than her height. She sat back on the only chair in the room and looked at her handy work…not bad if she did say so herself. Although she had done this before. She and the other teachers had often spent a little of past summers painting murals on the walls.
She couldn’t help but think what a shame it was that she couldn’t go higher. It would all need another coat, but if she finished, she’d only have to wait one day for the second coat to dry. If she left the top part of the wall, she’d have to wait for Shaun to paint that and then wait for IT to dry until he could put on the second coat. She’d be doing him a favour really. If she finished, all he’d have to do was one whole second coat, and the trim of course.

Shaun’s heart pounded harder than he ever thought possible. The car wouldn’t go any faster. WHY wouldn’t she answer her damn phone? It wasn’t even ringing anymore. It had to be today that the house phone was out, he was going to change companies! Then he was going to find some kind of position to put his wife in so he could spank her bottom until it shone for worrying him like this.
* * *
Shaun had left the ladder leaning against the wall conveniently, figuring that he’d need it. Skye opened it tentatively promising herself that she wouldn’t go any higher than she needed to. She managed to go once around the room on the second rung. Frustratingly there was still a good foot or so of wall to be painted. She sighed. It wasn’t easy to balance the tray and the roller and hang on to the rungs for support with her mega giant belly in the way… she was getting tired. She sat on the bottom rung and rested for a couple of moments. She really should stop, but as her eyes drifted to the top of the wall, she just couldn’t stand it. How long could it take anyway? It was such a little bit that was ruining the look of the rest of the wall.

“Finally,” Shaun said to no-one as he pulled into the driveway. He jogged into the house and up the stairs, he almost ran straight past the nursery to get to their room but what he found stopped him in his tracks.
“Skye!” he barked stupidly. He could have kicked himself for being so stupid.
She turned quickly and lost her balance.
Shau
n jumped into the room and caught her just in time and they both toppled onto the floor. Luckily, he broke her fall. “Are you ok?” he asked desperately.
“Yes I’m fine!” she said grumpily. “You scared me! Look what you’ve done! Now the paint is spilled all over the floor!”
That did it for Shaun. He helped Skye to stand and then tucked her under his arm.
“Hey, stop it!” she yelped as a breeze washed across her now naked bottom.
It had taken Shaun all of two minutes to divest her of her pants and start spanking the wriggling target.
“I wanted to paint is all,” she whined.
“I. Told. You. SPECIFICALLY. Not To,” he said, punctuating every word with a hard whack.
“You were supposed to do it today!” She said with a stomp of her foot.
Shaun shook his head with frustration. This little brat just wasn’t getting it. After ignoring him and putting both herself and the baby in danger, she still didn’t think she’d done anything wrong AND she was giving him attitude! His eyes scanned the room for something to make a better impression. His eyes lit upon a discarded paint stirring stick. Perfect. He picked it up and realized it was light enough not to do any damage but hopefully it would make a better impression than his hand had.
* * *
Skye stomped her foot in frustration. She was trying to impress upon Shaun that she’d HAD to start painting. He’d said he would do it and he hadn’t. “What was I supposed to do when you didn’t do it?”
“You were supposed to wait, exactly like I told you,” Shaun said. He flicked the paint stick across her pink bottom firmly.
“Yeow!” Skye yelped as a line of stinging fire burst across her already stinging cheeks. What was that? She tried to turn around and see what Shaun was using but she was held fast. Whatever it was landed again and again. It felt like she’d been stung by a thousand bees as the thing kept biting her already sore bottom.
“I had to go to work.” He brought the stick across her ass several more times, right on the crease of each of her bottom cheeks and she burst into tears.
“I thought I could do it,” she said, her eyes now filled with hot tears that threatened to spill over and run down her flushed cheeks.
“You could have really hurt yourself,” he said bringing the stick across her now striped bottom. “Or the baby.” One last whack and he dropped it at his feet.
“I’m sorry!” she wailed. He pulled her into his arms tightly and kissed her head over and over.
“You scared me. You didn’t answer your phone.”
“I didn’t hear it.”
“No more climbing,” he said with a sigh. “Please.”
“I won’t. I’m sorry,” she sniffled. “I don’t ever want to see paint or that stirring stick ever again.” She realized now what it was that Shaun had used.
“Good,” Shaun said continuing to rock her in his arms. “Then it did its job.”
“Will you paint the rest tomorrow?” she asked with a grin.
He rolled his eyes and chuckled.
Prologue
“You know…I don’t really like this carpet,” Skye said with her nose screwed up. “I liked the wood.” Shaun tickled her.
“We had wood, until some naughty girl spilled a can of paint on it.”
“You scared me! Anyway we could have had it fixed.”
“Yes, we could have but you didn’t want to wait.”
“Well maybe we can change it after the baby is born?”
Shaun had turned back to the latest piece of artwork he was hanging.
“Um Shaun?”
“Yeah?”
“I think we’re going to HAVE to change this carpet.”
“Skye honestly,” he started to scold.
“No I mean it, we really may HAVE to. My water just broke.”
* * *
“One last push honey. One last push!” Shaun encouraged.
“Shut! Up!” Skye growled in a low and very scary voice. Shaun winced. He wasn’t sure whether that was because she shouted at him or because he’d lost all feeling in his now squished fingers. All he did know was that after eight long hours of labor it wouldn’t be in his best interest to make a comment on either. Skye was cranky and exhausted and he didn’t blame her at all.
“Come on Skye. This really should be the one,” the Doctor said. He’d never really looked at Doctors as being brave, but they were he realized.
Skye took a deep breath and gave one almighty push and she was there. Her head was there. Right where he could see it. Tiny blonde curls like her mother. They didn’t have to tell Skye again. He watched in awe as she found another burst of energy and pushed with all of her might. Shaun watched the scene through tear filled eyes as the doctor assisted his tiny daughter on the final leg of her journey into the world. The room was filled with the wail they’d all been waiting for. He kissed his now ecstatic wife, as they both peered at the wet squirming little creature they’d been waiting to meet for so long.
* * *
Skye looked down at the little naked bundle that had been thrust into her arms, she was beautiful. Her lusty cries filled the room and she kicked her legs indignantly at her interrupted slumber and the sudden bright lights. As both of her adoring parents kissed and stroked her chubby cheeks, she opened her eyes and blinked.
“Welcome to the world Scarlett,” Skye said.
