In a country where it was dangerous to simply be unenthusiastic in parroting Nazi slogans, the members of the Resistance took action. Some in the military or Abwehr tried to save their country by betraying their government. Others risked their lives to meet with foreign diplomatic, military and intelligence officials all over the world. Some worked within the remnants of the German church or tried to use the Vatican as a conduit for help from the outside world. Students handed out anti-Nazi fliers in full view of the informers. Conspirators, realizing that Hitler's death alone would save them, tried time and again to kill him. Most Resistance members didn't live to see their dream realized – the dream of a Nazi-free Germany. This book is dedicated to them.

"Few ages have produced so many martyrs as ours, and in time to come countless Germans will also be included in the roll of honor of those who perished for freedom and a better future"

-Hans Bernd Gisevius, To the Bitter End, 1946
