  Afterword from the Authors

Thank you very much for reading Level Up: The Knockout!

First, please forgive us if something in this book seemed odd. The thing is, neither of us had lived in the US prior to or while writing this book. So we do apologize if some of the characters, dialogs or situations have come across as stereotypical. We understand, of course, that nothing can replace first-hand insider knowledge of local life with all its complexities and finer details. We can only hope that human nature is the same everywhere, as are the ideas of love, dignity and integrity.

For both of us, it was our first co-authorship experience. It was Dan who’d come up with the character of Mike Hagen as part of his Level Up world. He also wrote the first two chapters as a standalone short story Level Up: Fight Setup which was translated separately and published in the You’re in Game!-2 LitRPG anthology.

Dan continued to think about Hagen who kept turning over in his head, demanding his own story. In the end, Dan came up with an outline to which Max then added his own ideas. Finally, the story got rolling.

Our work proceeded as follows: Max would write a chapter from Dan’s outline, after which Dan would edit it, trying to make it conform with the style of his original Level Up series. He was also the one responsible for all the RPG mechanics and stat calculations because, by Max’s own admission, he’s not big on math. However, Max is responsible for most of the text. Had it not been for him, this book might never have happened as Dan was too busy working on The Final Trial (Level Up Book #3) to spend more than a few hours a week on the project.

Mike Hagen will make a cameo appearance in The Final Trial where he’ll join Phil Panfilov and will be subjected to a similar trial on Pibellau. It may be a bit part, but his experience will help all other “socially meaningful” subjects to survive.

Mike’s own adventures will continue in the second book of Level Up: The Knockout, due out in the summer of 2019.

  About the Authors

DAN SUGRALINOV grew up in a small working-class town on the Russian border with Kazakhstan. It’s a miracle he survived his childhood games of hide-and-seek in the surrounding building sites complete with perilous rebar structures and flooded foundation pits.

Ever since he learned to read at the age of five, he couldn’t put a book down. Reluctant to earn himself the name of a conceited nerd, he concentrated on playing soccer which allowed him to become friends with the town’s toughest kids.

In 1995, he graduated with honors, entering the St Petersburg Academy of Engineering and Economics where he studied business creation. He must have done something right because in the years that followed, he first worked on TV and radio just to get the taste of it, then opened his first successful business followed by several more. In between, he started writing and playing video games, winning the St Petersburg Mortal Kombat championship and becoming runner-up for Starcraft and Warcraft 3. He is a 14-times champion in Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 as well as the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft.

In 2004, he wrote his first motivational novella The Bricks which to date has garnered him over 3,000,000 readers online alone.

In 2014, Russia’s leading publishers of business literature Mann, Ivanov & Ferber published a revised and extended edition of his book, The Bricks 2.0.

In 2015, Dan discovered the existence of LitRPG. He devoured everything that had been written in that genre until he f
inally decided he too could write similar books.

In summer 2017, he published his first book in the subgenre of RealRPG: Level Up.

Dan Sugralinov is a consummate gamer, a multiple MMORPG champion and the world’s ex-#1 in the World of Warcraft. He is also a successful businessman and author of books on marketing and business organization. His first LitRPG series Level Up took Russia by storm in 2017. The English translation of the series is about to be released on Amazon in its entirety.

MAX LAGNO was born in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty), Kazakhstan, where he graduated from the local art college as easel painter.

Max has been writing for as long as he could remember but he never showed his work to anyone until the age of 30 nor did he upload his stories to the Internet. His first two novels were regular mainstream fiction. It took Max some time to reinvent himself and his art in order to return to his roots: action-packed science fiction adventure.

His first experience with computer games dates back to his childhood in the 1980s. Karateka, Street Fighter and other such titles have shaped his first LitRPG novel, Level Up: The Knockout. He knows the world of 8-bit games like the palm of his hand, having developed a strong dislike for the old-school 2-bit games in favor of shooters or open-world games.
