“I appreciate your concern but I really do feel like I've turned a corner and I'd like to go back to just living my life. I thank you for your time and I'll pay you for this session, and I really do appreciate everything you've done for me, but I think it's time I move forward with my life. I think I'm done looking back.”
With that, Leslie went to turn around and walk out of the office but before she could Dr. Arnet had one more thing to say. “There's someone I think you should talk to before you,” she said, and opened the door to her office. Intrigued, Leslie walked in and gasped. Sitting there was James. Immediately she knew what had transpired. Despite his promises to the contrary James had told her the truth, and suddenly Leslie's world began to crumble. She grew light-headed and stumbled back against the wall. James stood up.
“You promised!” Leslie shouted.
“I'm sorry, I had to tell her. I had to tell someone. You can't go through life keeping that to yourself. It's too big,” James said, looking apologetic, as he should, Leslie thought, for he had completely betrayed her trust.
“James came to me after our last session,” Mrs. Arnet said, shutting the door behind her, moving into the room. “I had a feeling you weren't being entirely truthful with me and I had to ask him some questions. When it became clear you had lied I knew that we needed to get to the truth. Leslie, you have some severe psychological scarring and we need to treat you so that you can live a healthy, productive life.”
Leslie shook her head vehemently. “No,” she said, “I know what I am, I know what I need to be.” She glared at them defiantly. “Nobody is going to make me doubt my life.” She marched to the door, barging past Dr. Arnet who looked shocked. Flinging the door open, Leslie strode outside, head held high, ignoring the pleas from James that were calling to her. She didn't need anyone telling her what to do. She knew her place in the universe, which was more than most other people could say, and she didn't care about James or Mrs. Arnet anymore either. They couldn't hurt her. Nobody could.
