I’d just finished an insane workout at the gym. I’d beat my personal lifting record in both dead lift and squat. I was feeling pumped. My body was in pique shape and I’d scored the number of a cute girl doing pilates.

Not that it was hard for me to get laid. I wasn’t hard up for sex either. I had six fuck buddies on regular rotation. Two redheads, a brunette, a blonde and two dark-haired beauties. Some slim and fit; others curvy and soft. I had one of each to suit my mood. I can be fickle. One second I’m head over heels in lust with the blonde; the next, I’m dying to fuck my hot-tempered, Puerto Rican raven-haired model.

It’s just sex of course. I don’t love them. Guys like me don’t do love.

Our arrangement was simple. They take care of me and I take care of them. I made sure they wanted for nothing. Credit cards, student loans-all paid off. I also made sure they have plenty of spending money.

Money is no object for me. Why would I deny cash to my girls? The trickiest part was keeping them all happy and oblivious. They didn’t know about one another. I suspect hell would have broken loose if they ever learned the truth. They were each convinced they were the sole object of my affection. I doubted they loved me anymore than I loved them, but they could be territorial.

I was trying to decide when to text the pilates girl when I noticed that a new juice bar had opened next to the gym. I decided to pop in and get a protein smoothie. That’s when I saw her. Actually, first I heard her. Her infectious laugh filled the room. I immediately turned to find the source. That’s when I saw Sage. She had long blonde hair she wore in a braid over her shoulder. She wore a t-shirt that said something about being a hunter and referenced a show I’d never heard of, Supernatural. Her long, toned legs were crossed beneath the table. Her foot bopped up and down in beat with the music playing over the juice bar’s intercom.

She sat with three men. Actually, calling them men was being generous. They looked like the biggest pack of beta males I’ve ever seen. Two of them were frighteningly skinny. Their clothes hung off them like scarecrows. They wore shirts with obscure phrases on them, references to some dorky jokes I didn’t understand. The third guy was huge. He barely fit in his seat. He had patchy facial hair that wound down his neck. His attempt at a beard was pathetic. The hair was wiry and short, like pubic hair. It looked disgusting.

What was a girl as hot as that doing sitting with three losers?

I ordered my drink, then stood at the counter waiting. I watched her throw back her head and laugh at something the fat one had said. It took less than a minute of watching them interact to determine the three guys were in love with her. They gazed at her like lovelorn little boys. She seemed oblivious though. But who knows? Some girls get off on the attention of guys they have no intention of fucking. Maybe she simply enjoyed having an army of beta males at her disposal.

I leaned against the counter and tried to listen in on their conversation.

“Oh my God,” she said. “Are you insane? Eccleston is the best Doctor. Doctor Who is unwatchable without him. I will not hear an argument otherwise.”

I was only vaguely familiar with Doctor Who. I knew it was a British Sci-Fi show, but I didn’t know much more than that. I watched her get up and walk up to the bar and order a raspberry smoothie. She paid, then skipped over to me. She leaned against the counter beside me, waiting for her drink to come. She wore a pair of cutoff denim shorts that showed off her long toned legs. She seemed oblivious to my presence. This threw me off. I’m used to girls checking me out. My body is ripped; I dress well. And, let’s face it, I’m rich. In the social circles I travel in, everyone knows my father. He owns half the real estate in New York. He’s a billionaire ten times over. My last name is uncommon and instantly recognizable. All I have to do is utter it and like magic, girls are lining up to fuck me.

This cute girl in a Supernatural T-shirt didn’t seem to notice or care about me though. I was dying to get her number. I had to think fast.

  “You’re right, y’know,” I said to her.

  “Sorry?”

“Eccleston is the superior Doctor. Those chumps wouldn’t know Doctor Who if it bit them in the ass.”

She lit up. Her pink lip gloss shone in the light of the café. Her smile was so bright that I couldn’t help smiling back. It was infectious.

“You like Doctor Who?” she asked.

  “Like it? I love it.”

I may have neglected to mention that I knew fuck all about Doctor Who. It didn’t matter; I was only trying to score her number.

“What’s your favorite episode?” she asked.

I faltered. “Y’know… most of the early ones with Eccleston. He’s the best.”

“The early Eccleston era is my favorite too!”

I nodded along as she launched into a long diatribe about Doctor Who. I had no idea what she was talking about, but she spoke with such enthusiasm that I couldn’t help laughing. She stopped long enough to catch her breath.

“I’m Sage by the way,” she said holding out her hand.

I took her tiny soft hand in mine. It’s not often you meet a girl who wants to shake hands when your introduced.

  “Knox.”

“You should come sit with us,” she said.

I glanced over my shoulder at her friends. They scowled at me. It was clear they wanted me nowhere near this beautiful girl they’d conned into hanging out with them.

“I’ve got a better idea,” I said. “Why don’t we take our drinks and go outside and talk? We could walk around the park. It’s a beautiful day.”

She chewed on her bottom lip. “I don’t know.” She leaned in confidentially and whispered: “I’d feel bad abandoning my friends like that.”

“They’re big boys. They’ll get over it. C’mon. Let’s take a walk around the city.”

Before she could argue further, I took her hand and led her out of the juice bar. She made her apologies to the beta males as we exited. I didn’t want her to listen to their whines of disapproval. They might actually succeed in talking her into staying. Luckily, I got her out of there before they could sink their hooks into her. We headed to the park.

“Did you just come from working out?” she asked.

I smiled. I liked it when girls appreciated how much work I put into my body. It didn’t come easy. I killed myself in the gym.

  “Yeah. You noticed?”

“You’re all stinky and sweaty,” she said with a cute laugh.

I frowned. It was not the response I’d been hoping for. “Do you work out?”

  “No.”

“Well, you don’t need to. Your
body is amazing.”

She shrugged shyly and drank her raspberry smoothie from the straw. “I bike,” she said. “I hate the pollution. We’re killing the Earth.”

I thought about the new Maserati I’d just purchased. It drew a lot of attention when I pulled up to a club in it. I’d left it with the valet back at the gym. I had a feeling Sage would not be impressed by it. In fact, she’d probably hate me for driving it.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. I try to walk as much as possible.”

  “Do you live nearby?”

  “A couple blocks from here.”

My condo was well within walking distance, but what’s the point in buying a Maserati if you can’t show it off? If Sage learned I was driving my car such a short distance, she’d probably call me an Earth Killer or something like that.

I decided to change the subject. “Sage is an unusual name.”

She smiled brightly. “My parents were hippies. I was born on a commune. We lived off the land; no electricity or indoor plumbing.”

  “Sounds rough.”

  “It was great.”

“Not too great, though. I mean, you live here in the city now. The last time I checked, we have electricity and plumbing.”

I knew girls like Sage, dying to get away from home and experience the world. She had a spark of mischief in her eyes. She wanted to rebel, though I imagine it’s hard to rebel against hippy parents with little to no rules. The closest thing to rebellion would be giving up the simple life and moving to the city.

My own childhood wasn’t so different. Well, actually, it was completely different. I was raised in the city. I grew up in a penthouse with nannies, maids and personal chefs. I wanted for nothing. Never had to lift a finger, or work hard. I knew I was spoiled rotten. I’m not proud of it, but I’m not exactly ashamed either.

The one thing Sage and I have in common, though, is little to no rules. I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. My douchebag father thought the world was his oyster. He expected his son to behave the same way. In fact, he encouraged it.

I’ll never forget walking in on him fucking the maid. She had her ankles wrapped around his shoulders. He was plowing into her like it was his last night on Earth and this was his final chance to get laid. I was thirteen at the time. My father and mother were still married. I freaked out, slammed the door shut and ran to my room. I remember feeling anxiety worse than I’ve ever felt in my life. It was like a knife was twisting around in my gut. For some reason, I felt guilty, as if I was the one who did something wrong. After I missed dinner, my father came in to talk to me.

“Knox,” he said, “you’re just like me: incapable of being satisfied. You’ve got the same hunger in your eyes that I had at your age. You’ll go far in life. You may even do better than me.”

He laughed at that, as if the idea of anyone doing better at life than him was ridiculous. I wasn’t sure what any of this had to do with him fucking the maid. He patted me on the shoulder and squeezed, like this was a real man-to-man moment.

“You’re insatiable just like me. When you’re my age this will all make more sense to you. In the meantime, let’s not mention this to your mother. She doesn’t need to know about what you walked in on earlier. She wouldn’t understand. Women don’t get it.”

He winked at me and left. The secret tore me up inside. I adored my mother. I couldn’t stand keeping it from her. Eventually, I cracked. I’ll never forget the faraway look in her eyes when I told her about walking in on my dad. She wasn’t surprised or angry; she was simply resigned to her fate. It was like she had given up. It didn’t occur to me until I was older, but clearly this wasn’t the first time he’d cheated on her. Knowing my dad, he’d probably cheated on her from the very beginning. My sweet mother had simply given up on trying to change him. She died when I was sixteen. My asshole father was out with one of his mistresses when she was on her deathbed. I will never forgive him.

My relationship with my father has never been the same. Worst of all, I was terrified that what he said was true. What if I was exactly like him? Was I incapable of being faithful to a woman? I was afraid to find out. I was twenty-seven years old when I met Sage and I’d never had a real girlfriend. The longest relationship I’d had was with one of my fuck buddies, Samantha. We’d been sleeping together for almost eight months. Sometimes we hung out and watched Netflix. Mostly we had sex. There was nothing romantic about our arrangement, but it was the closest thing to a relationship I’d ever experienced.

Deep down I knew I was chicken shit. I was avoiding opening up to a girl because I didn’t want to discover I was my father’s son. I never wanted to hurt a girl the way my father hurt my mother. My solution was to avoid relationships altogether.

“So what do you say?” Sage asked.

I hadn’t heard her question. I’d become lost in thought. “Sorry?” I said.

She stopped and turned to face me. She stood in front of a fountain. At its center was a woman carved from stone. She wore a loose fitting toga. One of her breasts was exposed. A peculiar half-grin crossed her face. Oddly, Sage had the same curious smile.

“Come over to my place tonight,” she said.

The dark cloud that descended over me when I thought of my father had lifted. Nothing chased the dark skies away faster than a pretty girl.

“That sounds great,” I replied. “I know a great Thai food place. I can pick up dinner for us.”

“Awesome! The guys will love that.”

  “The guys?”

My stomach dropped. Was she planning on inviting those losers from the juice bar?

“Yeah. Ansel loves Thai food, and I’m sure the others will love it too.”

“Ansel?” What the hell kind of name is Ansel for a man?

“He was the guy sitting next to me wearing the Fallout t-shirt.”

  “Fallout?”

  “Yeah, you know, the videogame?”

  “I don’t play videogames,” I admitted.

“Oh.” She looked disappointed. “I’m a big gamer. I’ve got a PS3, a PS4 and a Nintendo 3DS. I’ve been saving up for the last six months to buy a Wii U. I’ve been dying to play Mario Kart on it. Then the guys surprised me a couple days ago. They pooled their money together and bought the system and game for me. Isn’t that awesome? I’m so lucky to have friends like them.”

  “Yeah,” I said, unimpressed.

Sage was naïve. She had no idea that those guys were playing a game with her. I had no doubt they were trying to get into her pants. They were huge nerds and she was a cute geek girl. I was sure they thought they’d won the lottery. I had no doubt they were doing whatever they could to butter her up.

Sage was sweet. She probably thought that because she wasn’t attracted to the guys that they weren’t attracted to her either. She had a lot to learn about men. It was only a matter of time before one of the guys made a move on her and burst the bubble she was living in. Their friendship would probably be ruined, but she’d learn a valuable lesson about guys: don’t trust us.

“You’ll love Mario Kart,” she said. “We have competitions every weekend.”

So she was inviting me over to play videogames. Great. Judging by her enthusiasm, I didn’t think I could talk her out of it. I tried anyway.

“That sounds like fun,” I lied. “But what if we did something, I don’t know, a little more intimate?”

Her eyes went wide. I wasn’t sure if she was turned off by my suggestion or turned on.

“Just the two of us,” I continued. “We could get some takeout, have a few drinks, watch a movie, maybe Doctor Who?”

I was willing to suffer through Doctor Who if it meant I could get Sage alone.

“That sounds nice.” Here comes the ‘but,’ I thought. “But the guys and I always have game night on Fridays. I’d hate to cancel. Besides, I think you’d really enjoy it. C’mon. What do you say?” she said, nudging me. She looked up at me with bright blue eyes. She was so eager and innocent.

  I co
uld have passed and called up one of my fuck buddies, or the cute pilates girl from the gym. But sex was becoming tedious. It was always the same story. We went out for drinks, we fucked, I went home alone. I wanted to actually spend time with Sage. Of course I would have preferred to do it alone, but you can’t always get what you want.

“Okay,” I said. “What the hell.”

She looked a little surprised by my reaction. Maybe she was expecting me to be more enthusiastic. I don’t know.

I smiled and said: “I’m going to get you alone eventually though.”

She blushed and looked down at her scuffed sneakers. “I’ll see you tonight at seven?” she said, not meeting my eye.

  “Seven.”

She stood on her tip toes and kissed my cheek. A wide smile crossed her face. She blushed then quickly walked away. I couldn’t help smiling at how shy she was.

“Mario Kart,” I said out loud. I shook my head and watched her leave.

  2

I knocked on Sage’s door with my elbow. My hands were full. I’d bought enough Thai food to feed an army. I decided to order one of everything. Hopefully, it would be enough to feed her friends. The door opened. I was greeted by the smirking face of Ansel.

“Welcome, Knox,” he said, sounding like he was less than thrilled to see me. “I didn’t think you’d make it tonight.”

  “Am I late?”

“No. I just assumed you’d puss out.”

“Excuse me?” I said with an incredulous laugh. Did Ansel really believe that playing Mario Kart was a manly activity that only a pussy would run away from?

“We can be a bit intimidating,” he said, readjusting his glasses.

I laughed. “I think I can handle the three of you.”

Ansel’s smirk deepened. I wanted to knock that smug look off his face, but I had to behave. He was Sage’s friend. She wouldn’t forgive me for knocking him out even if he deserved it. He wouldn’t step out the way, so I had to push past him. I didn’t bother to ask him to help me with the food. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of asking for his help. Sage was in the kitchen bent over, looking in the fridge.
