Two months later
I read over the email from Greg. I’d hired him to take over day-to-day operations of my new gaming company. My purchase of the company had drawn a lot of attention. Everyone wanted to know what I knew that they didn’t. People in the industry were convinced I had insider information. If they knew the truth, they’d laugh me out of the business. It didn’t matter. Microsoft and Sony were lining up to do deals with us. We were in the middle of a bidding war between the companies about who would get exclusive rights to the game Sage was developing. It was in the very early stages of development. There was still months, if not years of work ahead, but they wanted to sign deals now.
She’d come up with a game that she described as Tomb Raider meets Game of Thrones. I had no idea what that meant, but she was excited about it and so was everyone else.
I wanted to give her space, so I honored my promise. I didn’t contact her and I didn’t interfere with her work. Greg sent me updates on the game’s progress, along with a list of problems they’d encountered. A lot of the tech jargon was a foreign language to me. I took it for granted that the issues were being dealt with.
After a month of feeling sorry for myself, I’d fallen back into my old routine. Drinking, fucking, the gym. Repeat, ad nauseam.
I’d reached a point where sex gave me no pleasure. It was like I existed in a negative space. I followed this routine because it was all I had left. If not, I’d sit at home alone, spiraling deeper into depression.
I read through my emails. Two of my fuck buddies wanted to hook up tonight. I briefly considered creating chaos. What would happen if I invited both girls over at the same time? Would they fight? Would they want a threesome? It might add some excitement into my life, but I doubted it. Ultimately, I sent them identical emails telling them we’d hook up some other time. There was a knock at the door. I checked my watch. I’d ordered takeout. They were fast. I took out my wallet and went to the door.
“How much do I owe you?” I asked as I opened the door. I looked up to find Sage staring at me.
“Owe me?”
Her presence left me speechless. I felt like I’d been woken in the middle of the night to find a ghost standing over my bed.
“I thought you were the delivery guy.”
She was wearing a short black dress, tights and boots. Her hair looked a bit longer. She’d dyed the blonde ends a soft pink. It gave her more of a punk/goth look. She tilted her head to the side to consider me. There was no malice in her expression. She looked like a curious cat.
“Are you going to invite me in?” she asked.
“Yeah. Of course.”
I stepped aside. She walked in carrying a plastic bag. She scanned the place, biting on the inside of her cheek and puckering her lips in a comical display of someone deep in thought.
“Not too shabby,” she said, meaning my apartment.
I felt embarrassed by how big the place was. I didn’t need an apartment this size. Sage lived modestly. She probably thought I was wasting money by living here. She handed me the plastic bag.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Doctor Who, starting with the Christopher Eccleston era. I thought we could work our way forward from there.”
I looked inside the bag. It was a DVD box set of Doctor Who.
“Is your TV in there?” she asked, pointing down the hall towards the den.
“Yeah, but…”
“Why am I here?”
“I thought you hated me.”
“I never hated you,” she sighed. “I was just angry and sad. I didn’t know who to trust.”
“Sage, I-”
“I still don’t trust you, but trust can be built. I want to try. Do you?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Good. Now, stop telling me what you think I want to hear. Just be yourself.”
“Easier said than done.”
She raised an eyebrow and headed off towards the den. I followed behind.
“I think you’re going to like Doctor Who,” she said.
“It’s about a wizard, or something, right?”
“Oh my God, I’m going to pretend like I didn’t just hear that.”
“What?”
“You’ve got a lot to learn.”
We spent all night laughing, watching TV and eating junk food. When the night was over, Sage gave my arm a friendly squeeze, then left. I didn’t dare push my luck by trying to kiss her. We had to take it slow.
We hung out a lot and became friends. I even worked up the courage to tell Sage that I wasn’t that crazy about Doctor Who. She laughed, then introduced me to Game of Thrones-a show I ended up falling in love with.
“I knew there was a nerd inside you dying to come out,” she declared.
“Don’t get carried away.”
One night we were laughing while watching an old episode of The Office and I started to tickle her. We wrestled on the couch, playfully throwing each other around. The next thing I knew she was in my arms and we were kissing.
Without thinking, my hand slid inside her top. I pushed myself off her. It took every ounce of strength I had, but I made myself stop.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Is this okay? We’re not moving too fast?”
Normally, I would have just dived in headfirst, but I didn’t want to ruin things between us.
“Are you kidding me?” She grabbed my neck and pulled me down on top of her.
I tried to pace myself. I wanted nothing more than to feel her soft body beneath mine. The way she spread her legs as I entered her was a sensation I’d never forget. Nor would I ever forget the sound of her sigh as I slowly drove my cock into her.
We made love all night, then Sage fell asleep, her naked bodies curled around mine. As I watched her sleep, I wondered what this moment meant. Had Sage forgiven me? Was this just a one night stand to her?
