Dragon Rider (DragonMage Saga) Page 38

Shylyn shook her head in the negative before answering Angel. ‘No I think it won’t work with fire and some other spells but mostly with the energy balls. We must find out sometime.’

Medwin tapped Angel on the shoulder and pointed to what was happening just outside the cave. The spell they had put on the walls to act just like the shield room, were working very well and the amount of creatures were nearly all gone with just a few small ones and the three big ones.

The deck was covered in dead or dying creatures but the three big ones still flew just above the deck. They now stopped what they were doing and kept an eye on what was going to happen. The creatures would not come any closer for it was if they could work out that it was not safe for them to come closer.

Gavrie looked at the carnage that lay scattered across the deck. There were dead bodies just everywhere piled high. They were going to have one hell of a cleaning job to do when this was finished but at lest now they will have that chance.

Now all they had to do was getting rid of the big ones who didn’t want to come in close. It looked as if these big ones had a brain. We must try and get them in close so as to have the wall spells fire balls of fire at them.

Angel was hoping they would fire their energy balls at us so we may grab them and send them back at them. But they waited and waited as the creatures just flew around in a circle waiting for something but what they could not know.

Angel was using his brain to see if he could work out how to make an energy ball here and be able to get it to hit the creatures. He was very reluctant in case it got into the wrong hands. If the creatures would fire another lot again then he could turn them back on the creature.

‘Come on I want everybody to use their shields and push this rubbish of the deck and see what the creatures are going to do.’ Gavrie looking at Angel to see if he had anymore ideas.

As they did this Angel kept a close eye on the creatures waiting around up there, they will not stay flying around for to much longer. They have a brain but it’s not that big but they can still think of something to try. Angel was thinking about other ways to bring them down and within range of the spells on the walls.

He knows what happened to the other creature when the fire balls hit it; they just bounced off and had left no mark. The only way was to try and get them down or to at lest fire one of their energy balls. They carried on pushing the dead over the side of the deck.

The creatures still just flew around and around, staying out of reach of the wizards and their spells. Angel looked up at them and Gavrie come up behind him. ‘What do you think will be their next move and when will it take place?’ Gavrie looking up at them as he spoke.

‘They want to work out what happened to the other big creature then they might attack.’ He looked at Gavrie and could see there was still worry line on his face. These creatures were something they could not leave lying around so they needed to get them to come closer so they could kill them. The creatures flew around for a little longer and then flew off up into the sky and away.

Angel suddenly thought of Aura and the others, as the creatures had flown off around to their end of the decks. ‘Aura can you see the creatures, where are they?’

‘We see them and they have seen us and are climbing to meet us.’ Aura did not sound too concerned at the moment.

‘Aura stay away from them and keep a close eye on them, we are going to get to a place where we can help if you need us.’ Angel turned as he finished talking to Aura and indicated to the others to follow.

Angel with the others headed off to the school when Gavrie intercepted them. ‘Where are you going?’

‘We are tried and thought we could get a bit of a rest, is that ok?’ Angel just wanted to make sure it would be ok with Gavrie as he was a little uptight at the moment.

‘No that’s fine as you have been working very hard, I will come and get you if we need you. We will have some wizards up in the tower and on the roof of the school to keep an eye out for the creatures. As soon as we can I’ll let the Dragon Riders know there are three large creatures free.’ Gavrie indicated they go on there way.

They headed into the school and to the meal hall where there were a lot of wizards in already getting some food and rest. They still did not know how long this period of no action was going to last. They grabbed some food and drink and headed off to there room.

They took their favourite place on the cushions by the large window. Getting into a good position as they were going to be with their dragons and needed to be comfy. They quickly ate as Angel contacted Aura to see what was happening.

‘Aura where are the creatures and are you keeping away from them?’ He worried as the creatures and their energy ball could take them very easily.

‘We are ok but the creatures have fired their energy balls at us and they are getting closer. We don’t know if we can get away from them.’ There was a little fear in her voice but it was only a little.

‘Aura we are coming into your mind and will show you how to control the energy ball and send it back at them.’ Angel felt she was coping but only just and he needed to get rid of the creatures and this might be the best time to do it.

They entered their dragons’ minds and got them to look around and see how far the creatures and energy balls were. As the dragons turned their heads they could see the energy balls were still a little ways back but gaining.

The creatures were just back a bit further and still following, and they were not going to stop chasing them. They had lost getting back at the school as it was to dangerous with all the little creatures getting killed. Then there was the other big creature that just disappeared.

Angel got Aura to stop and turn and face the energy ball with the others doing the same. ‘Now using the magic like so we sense the energy ball and feel around it and then we gently hold the ball so it stops and now we wait as the creatures come closer. Now when they get just a little bit closer we give it a hard push. The speed will increase and the creatures should not be able to get away.’

They watched as the energy balls speed at the creatures and the creatures were not that quick as the energy balls hit two of the creatures with the third missing. The two that hit, got the creatures in the body where they exploded.

The third creature was able to turn and the energy ball just missed. Angel was thinking hard as he could see the third ball was going to miss. They watched to see what the creature was going to do. They hovered there till they could see the creature was going to move off. This is not what they wanted so they followed.

Angel urged Aura to try and catch up as he was going to try something. ‘Ok Aura we are going to create a ball of energy just like they do but we will try and make it a bit better. Now I think I can weave it like the ones they do but will make it a bit finer.’

The others watched as Angel and Aura wove the spell into a ball. The pattern was different to anything they had seen in the magic they use and even the old spell. They were using alien magic which was unheard of. The ball of energy appeared in front of them and they fired it at the fleeing creature.

The creature turned to look just as the energy ball was about to hit, but the creature had turned and seen it to late as the energy ball hit. This time the ball of energy had a different reaction to the others. The ball hit the creature and it enveloped the creature in a dazzling ball of energy.

The creature tried to get out of it but it held him and it just scrammed and thrashed trying to get out, Angel and Aura could not believe what they were seeing. They were still in control of the energy ball and Angel gave it a little tweak and the ball tightened a little. The creatures’ energy balls were course and made roughly.

Angel and Aura’s one was woven with great care but done fast. But the result of the energy ball compared to the creatures was not what they expected. The creature was caught and was not hurt inside the ball but it just could not get out.

Angel and Aura looked at the spell with their magic to see where
they had made it different. They looked at every little piece of it to see where it can be altered to do something different. They found the spot in the pattern that differed from the one the creatures make.

Angel gave it a tweak and the creature exploded within the energy ball, as the ball collapsed in on itself. They decided they needed to create the spell in the Crystal Chamber so they could see it better. If they could change it that easy there might be other uses for the spell.

They thought about using it in lances as it would be better than fire balls. More powerful and the Dragon Riders could do with something with a bit more power. They headed back home and Angel and his friends left their dragons and come back to themselves in their room.

As they come back to their bodies sitting watching them was Gavrie. They got a fright for they had not expected anyone to be there. Now they had to explain what they were doing and it had to be good. Angel looked at Gavrie and realized he was going to need something more than any old excuse.

Angel looked at his friends and he got up along with the others. ‘I think we need to show you something that we have been working on since that creature exploded this afternoon. So if you come with us to the Crystal Chamber we will show you what we have been working on?’

Gavrie indicated to lead on and they left the room and headed up to the Crystal Chamber. Once they arrived there Angel went out to the centre just a little away from the crystal and proceeded to create and weave the pattern of the energy ball but the one that exploded the creature.

Angel performed the spell and in the air just in front of him an energy ball appeared, it was not a big one but just big enough that he could throw it out the window at the sea where it exploded. Gavrie looked and a look of amazement appeared on his face.

‘That is what we have been working on and it would be very simple to load that spell into the lances and you would have a much more powerful weapon for the Dragon Riders as well as the Wizards. When you came in we were looking at the patterns in our heads to see if we had it right.’ Angel could see they had diverted his attention from the look that we must have had on our faces when we seen him there.

‘This is incredible you have given us a powerful new weapon against the creatures and I had better get on to this right away. Can you show me how you make it and then I can show those who load the lances and make them. We will have to get them under way right away for we don’t know how long it will be before they decide to attack again.’ He was so thrilled for what they had done, this was very special at there age, it was unheard of that someone so young can do this.

‘I will get in touch with your mother and get some Dragon Riders over here to pick up some lances. We will do so many for the Dragon Riders and so many for us until we can get half all lances changed over. Thank you for what you have given us, you four are something else.’ He muttered as he turned to leave the room.

‘Headmaster, can you not tell anyone who created the spell as we want to remain in the background and not have anybody think us strange?’ He looked at the head a pleading look on his face.

‘That will be fine I will tell them I had been working on it when I saw what the big creatures did with them. Now I must get this pattern back to the weapons teacher and maker as we will need them quickly.’ He was out the door and down the hall so fast.

They just laughed as he ran down the hall and they headed back to their room and some sleep as they felt very tried. The day had been very taxing but they had held out very well considering all the magic they have been using today. They feel they are now settling into their magic and it is keeping them from getting too tired.

Getting back to their room they went off to bed and a well earned rest. Angels dreams that night was not very restful and twice in the night he awoke. He still felt they were not through the worst just yet. Tomorrow they must check the spell for the Renegade will have had two days to work on the old spell.

But that was not the reason he was restless, there was something else and he had bad feelings for the days to come. The Renegades had lost twenty wizards today and that was something you don’t throw away. Someone or something is willing to throw away wizards just to hide what they were trying to do to the old spell.

If he was willing to open such a large portal knowing it would take that much out of the wizards they would be unable to control their dragons. With that the wizards could not make their dragons move and so they died. They would do it again and soon while we were still recovering form this attack.

Angel tried to go back to sleep and get away from these dreams; Aura was there in the back ground as she was having the same problems. Sleep was still along way away and he just tried to relax. He knew he would just have to wait till it came.

The next day Gavrie had wizards making the changes to the lances they had spare. It would take them a few days to convert all the lances they had here but they should have all the spare ones finished by the end of the day. Angel and his friends were helping with the conversions and they enjoyed doing this as it gave them time to look at the spell and see if there was anything else they could get out of it.

After lunch Gavrie called them over and told them Dragon Riders would be here this afternoon late. ‘Your mother and brothers will be with four other Dragon Riders. When we explained what happened your mother was the first to want to come as well as your brothers.’ He smiled as he told them who was coming for he could see Angels face lit up when he heard.

‘Will they be staying long or do they have to get back quick?’ There was an edge of joy in his voice as he asked.

‘It depends on the time they arrive for if they are here early they will probably go but if they get here late then they will stay till the next day. So we’ll just have to wait and see.’ He could see the longing, in Angels face and hoped they get here late.

They headed back out to the cave to help with the lances until Tish arrived with Rho and Etha. The rest of the day dragged on and it was late when the wizard in the tower yelled Dragon Riders. As soon as he heard that call he was out of the cave like a shot. In the air above he could see the Dragon Riders descend to the next deck where they were going to leave their dragons for the night.

Angel and his friends ran to the next deck door to wait for his mother to come through. It was not long when she walked through the door and found Angel flying into his mother. She could see that he was pleased to see her.

‘You will be staying tonight, you won’t go till tomorrow will you?’ There was a pleading look in his face as she looked down at him.

Looking at Angel she could tell they had a hard couple of days and he needed her to be here tonight. She could also see his friends were hoping they would stay as well. She had been thinking of getting the new lances back but seeing the look on their faces she decided to stay.

‘We will be staying till the morning will that make you happy and we will stay with you in your rooms. Rho and Etha enjoyed the stay last time and so I think they will this time. Now come on I must go and see Gavrie and will meet you all back in the meal hall for the meal, OK?’ She pushed them forward as she let them know her plans.

After the meal they went back to their room and sat on the cushions and talked for a long time. Tish did not stop them for they needed to releases the build up of pressure that the battle with the Creatures had on them.

It was getting late so Tish put an end to the talking and pushed them all off to bed. With all their talking and the pressure release, she was pretty sure they would sleep solid tonight. As they went to bed she could see the spring in their steps that was not there when they came up to the room.

It was early the next morning when Aura came into his mind and called to him. Angel was in a very deep sleep for the last few nights his sleep had been disturbed but this last night with his mother and brothers here he slept like a log.

‘Angel you need to wake up now, the creatures are going to attack again, now you must wake up?’ Auras voice was starting to get panicky and was
about to yell it to him when he come through the sleepiness in his head.

‘What did you say?’ What Aura had said was starting to penetrate his sleep fogged brain.

‘The Renegades dragon called to tell us he comes and there are more Renegade Wizards going to open another portal. He tells us this time the wizards riding dragons is carrying a wizard as well as themselves. They are going to open another large one and keep it as long as they can before they get their dragons and wizards out of there.’ There was deep concern in her voice as she conveyed this to him.

‘When will they get here?’ He was hoping they might have some time to get ready.

‘The dragon tells us, the first group with the extra Renegade Wizards have left ahead of them and are probably almost at the same place as the portal opened yesterday, they will almost be ready to open the portal soon.’ Aura finished talking as Angel was up out of bed.

Angel realized he did not have much time to worn Gavrie but just maybe with the Dragon Riders here and with the new lances they might be able to stop them before to many Creatures get through. Angel walked over to Medwin and gave him a light tap to wake him up.

‘Medwin the Renegades are coming again and are opening the portal again in the same place. I am going to worn the Headmaster and he may get the Dragon Riders here to go and stop them before too many Creatures get through. ‘He was heading out the door as he finished. He had no worry on waking his brothers as he knows how they sleep.

Angel was out the door and up to Gavrie’s room and banging on it very loudly. Gavrie came to the door and indicated for Angel to come in. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘The Renegade wizards are at this moment getting ready to open another portal the same size as the one yesterday. This time there are other wizards with them so they can get away. Send the Dragon Riders up over the mountain and with the new lances they should be able to stop them from letting too many Creatures in.’ There was almost a panic in his voice as he told Gavrie.

Gavrie looked into his eyes and could see the deep fear that was there but hidden well. He turned and with a wave of his hand set the warning bell going, they were going to need as much time as they could to get ready. He must get Tish to take the new lances and go up over the mountain and try stopping them keeping the portal open until they were ready.
