Sable moved to sit on the bench and tuned him out as he talked in the demon tongue. She looked over at Loren. The handsome elf scanned the room, his frown growing.
“Who are you looking for?” Olivia said and stood, tossing the bloodied cotton wool onto the pile at her feet.
“I desire a word with the sorceress.” Loren kept scanning the long room and Sable joined him.
The demon left and Thorne gave her a quizzical look.
“Have you seen Rosalind?” she said and he shook his head.
“Not since she frightened Vail away with her magic.”
Sable’s eyebrows shot up. “Vail was here?”
Was that why Loren wanted to speak with her, because she had scared him off?
Olivia nodded. “He came out of nowhere to defend me after we were all separated by that spell. Loren tried to reach him and we think he was close to getting through to him, but then Rosalind launched an attack on the witches again, and he teleported.”
Thorne raised his hand, calling his man back. “Keep an eye open on the battlefield for the witch Rosalind. She is missing and may be injured.”
The man nodded and teleported.
“She is not injured. She was taken.”
Sable frowned up at Grave as he loitered off to her left, nursing his arm and covered in dried blood and lacerations.
“Taken?” Thorne shot to his feet. “Explain yourself.”
His fear washed through her and she slipped her hand into his, trying to draw his attention down to her so she could ease it away.
His crimson gaze flickered to her and back to Grave.
“Thorne,” Sable said and he finally gave her his attention. “Rosalind released you of your vow when she came out to help us. I told her to go back inside, reminded her of the vow, and she said that she was breaking it.”
Relief beat through him but it lasted only a second before he was frowning at Grave again.
“Who took her?”
The vampire rubbed his good hand over his matted dark hair and grimaced, grinding his teeth together. Red ringed his irises and then gradually faded.
“I saw her separated from the others while you dealt the deathblow upon the Fifth King. The demons she was battling seized her upon seeing their king fall and shortly afterwards they teleported.” Grave’s pale irises flickered crimson again and he squeezed his eyes shut.
One of his men came to him, stopping close enough to assist him if he needed it but wisely keeping his distance too. Grave glared at him, issuing a silent challenge. Sable willed the vampire to do the wise thing and take a step back from his commander. The man obviously wanted to assist him if he needed it, but as far as she could see, he was in danger of committing suicide.
He edged further away from Grave but remained within lunging distance.
Grave returned his cold gaze to Thorne.
Thorne stared him down. “You saw them seize her and did not attempt to help her? You did not think to go after them?”
Grave stepped closer to Thorne and narrowed his eyes on him, the edges of his irises turning crimson again. “The witch was a fair distance from me and I had my hands full with the demons, and unfortunately I do not possess the ability to teleport.”
He slid his glare towards Loren and curled his lip, exposing one fang, before returning his attention to Thorne.
“And besides… the uninitiated should not head into battles such as this one.”
The vampire glanced at Kyal as he hobbled past them, assisted by Kincaid, badly injured and covered with blood.
And nude.
Sable stared at her feet.
Thorne growled. “By the gods’ good names, put some clothes on.”
“If you are quite done interrogating me about the fate of a single female, I have matters that require my attention.” Grave stepped back and sauntered down the aisle between the beds, heading towards the other end of the infirmary.
Kyal growled as he passed them.
For once, Grave ignored him, his focus locked on the end of the room where some of his men lay wounded and recuperating.
Olivia gave her a strange look and led Loren away, leaving her alone with Thorne. Her friends were clearly conspiring against her now, seeing her need to speak with him and wanting to give them some privacy.
Sable looked up at Thorne, unsure what to say as her thoughts collided, tangling together in her mind and leaving her uncertain of everything.
“Thorne,” she whispered and he looked down at her. “We’ll find Rosalind.”
He frowned. “We?”
Her heart flipped in her chest and she blew out her breath, trying to expel her nerves with it.
She nodded. “We.”
He sat beside her again and took hold of her hand, his beautiful dark scarlet eyes locked on hers.
“But your mission here is done. You will return to Archangel.”
She hated the certainty with which he said that and looked away from him, catching Olivia’s gaze across the room.
Sable closed her eyes to shut everyone out and focused on why she had come here.
She had come to the Third Realm to prove herself as a hunter and finally achieve the rank of commander, a position she had desired ever since she had joined Archangel, but so much had happened.
She had learned part of the truth about herself and it was going to be a long time before she could come to terms with it. If she returned to Archangel now, after her men had seen her fighting the Fifth King and had witnessed what she had done to him, she would have to face Mark and the other senior members. They would want to know about her powers.
She didn’t know about them herself. How was she meant to tell them about something even she didn’t understand yet?
Thorne’s hand gently settled on the silver cuff around her wrist and she opened her eyes and looked up into his. His soft gaze held hers, his tender emotions travelling through the link between them and speaking to her heart.
“I will be there with you, Sable, at your side for all eternity, no matter what happens or what decision you make. I will always be yours, and you will always be mine, and we shall always have each other.”
She gave him a shaky smile.
“I want you to know that you have a place here with me… and I do have an opening for a commander. You are welcome to it.” He smiled at her, beautiful and enchanting, bringing hers to life.
Before her was a man who would do anything for her.
A demon king who loved her with all of his heart.
And had claimed hers.
Sable stared deep into his eyes, seeing all his love in them and knowing that she could never bring herself to part from him. She didn’t want to leave Archangel behind but she had a new purpose now and this was where she belonged, with Thorne.
He would do all in his power to help her discover the truth about her family and how to control her abilities, and she loved him for that and for being there for her.
She would return to Archangel to report on her mission here in the Third Realm, but she would also tell them that she wasn’t staying. Her mission wasn’t over yet. She had lost too many of her men in the war and she refused to give up on the others who had been captured by the dragons. She would track and slay every single one of the shifters to free her huntresses, beginning with Anais.
That mission to rescue her huntresses would also give her the time she needed to put her life with Archangel to rest and to learn more about herself. Then, she would be ready to embark on her new, eternal life with the beautiful demon watching her intently, studying her face as he held his breath and waited for her to speak.
Sable reached up and brushed her fingers across his cheek, holding his gaze and keeping it locked on hers even as it wavered, his nerves getting the better of him. She smiled to alleviate them and let the words flow freely from her soul.
“I knew in my heart the moment I gave it to you that I would leave my life at Archangel behind one day so I could be with you… wh
ether that’s as your commander or your queen.”
Thorne grinned. “Or both.”
“I can do both.” Sable chuckled and he pulled her back onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her, his expression turning deadly serious, making her flutter inside. She pressed a kiss to his cheek and then another, and whispered against it, “Queen Sable, commander of the legions of the Third Realm… it has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
Thorne’s relief flowed through her as he fingered the holes in the back of her black t-shirt, stroking her sensitive skin. Shivers skittered down her back and along her arms and her gaze grew hooded as she lowered it to Thorne’s mouth, already imagining the searing kiss she felt coming.
“You are not queen yet, Little Female,” Thorne husked and edged his lips closer to hers, his slowness tearing at her and making her wriggle as frustration tightened her stomach.
“But I am your queen,” she murmured with a smile and hooked her arms around his neck. “And you are my king…”
Sable slid one hand down his bare chest, feeling his muscles flutter beneath her light touch, and settled it over the hard bulge in his leathers. Hunger flooded the link between them, desire that matched the ferocity of her own, and he groaned.
“And my king needs.”
Thorne crushed her lips under a kiss that seared every inch of her, setting her aflame with need and claiming every part of her, right down to her soul.
They would be each other’s forever.
And the whole of Hell would know that King Thorne of the Third Realm had been claimed.
Claimed by his angel queen.
