The design they were selling had a dial that changed the amount of gasoline feeding into the system. And bit by bit they were showing Whitney Device owners that they could get the same power output from less and less gas.
Adjustment seven would involve unplugging the system entirely, and they would give the owners the manual-start process.
Ivy had written a series of emails, detailing how excited they were to discover that the device didn’t need as much power input as they thought, and how owners could follow the steps included to help save on fuel costs. It was Kayla’s job to write out the instructions, and she just finished. She also had the responsibility of sending out the mass emails.
“Step two is done.” She smiled up at Ivy.
Without smiling back, Ivy pulled the chair over from her own desk. Ivy’s spot was directly under the window. She enjoyed having a distraction while she worked. “You realize that you got your shadow constant all wrong, don’t you?”
Kayla frowned. She realized no such thing. “I got it right. It gets adjusted as we go, but I got it right.”
Ivy softly shook her head and took Kayla’s hands in her own. “You missed it entirely.”
“What?”
“It isn’t even the number. You needed that to make the machine run, and you had to find out how to make it work for you. But that’s not the real shadow constant.”
“What do you mean?”
Reenie’s voice hollered up the stairs at them. “Don’t forget, we’re leaving in thirty minutes!”
Ivy hollered back, but then continued with Kayla. “It’s them.” She pointed to the computer screen showing the message that her email had been sent. “It’s the people. We had to figure out how to get them involved. How to not get squashed like Whitney and Edwin Carroll did. And how to get the people to come along. How to get them behind this.”
“Oh.” Ivy was right. “They’re the ones who are going to carry this. They’re going to use this technology to run cars and even the power grid one day.”
“Yeah. We’re the initial push. We figured out how to get it out there. But it’s out there now and it’s up to them. They’re the Shadow Constant.”
