She hadn’t expected the intrusion.
“Who’s that?” Zoey asked, feeling protective of Kaity.
“I have someone I’d like you and Kaity to meet. I hope you don’t mind.”
Zoey scrunched her face in question, but Mercer had already left his vehicle and came to her side to open the passenger door. He held out his hand to help her out of the car. He’d been sure of himself all night, but now he looked nervous. Zoey didn’t have the heart to make things worse for him. Without a word, she followed him to the van where he greeted a man with a handshake. They seemed to know each other.
When Mercer didn’t introduce her to the driver, Zoey opened her mouth to say something, but stopped when the rear door opened and the driver blocked her view. She heard the clank of a metal door and a whimper.
After the man stepped back, Zoey stared down at the most adorable black and tan French bulldog she had ever seen. She recognized the breed from a friend who had one. Frenchies were miniature bulldogs. They made great and loyal companions and were rare, not easy to come by. His scrunched, wrinkled face with its smashed nose and innocent, child-like eyes made her laugh.
“Oh, my Lord.” She reached out and touched his precious blackened face, his large bat-like ears, and stocky body. He squiggled with excitement, wearing his small service vest harness and leash.
“He’s a certified therapy dog. Kaity will need training, but he’ll be happy to help her,” Mercer said. “I have Kaity lined up for lessons when she’s ready, a dog handling group in Denver.”
Zoey pressed a hand to her lips and tried to fight back her emotions. Mercer had rescued Kaity and saved her life and he was doing it again.
“I have the van loaded with plenty of food, a carrier, his bed, toys, and other things he’ll need. I hope Kaity likes him.”
“She’ll love him.” Choked up, she almost couldn’t get the words out. “He’s perfect. What’s his name?”
“Chuck Norris.”
Zoey lost it.
In a fit of laughter that turned into a deluge of grateful tears, she pulled Mercer into her arms. Under the magic of moonlight and the watchful eyes of Chuck Norris, Zoey kissed Mercer with a passion she’d never thought possible. The world faded to nothing until she only felt his arms around her and the warmth of his body. She breathed in his faint cologne mixed with the enticing smell of his skin and nestled against him until she swore her heart beat in rhythm with his.
