Grace kissed Merline on the cheek then grabbed her bouquet of white lilies and bluebonnets. She followed Merline into Nathan’s living room where Evan waited for her, dressed to the nines in a black suit and tie and shiny black shoes. He looked so much older it startled her.
“Mom, you’re so pretty.”
Those darn tears threatened again. “And you, sir, are very handsome.”
A glance at Cheyenne, dressed in a pale blue dress and ready to do her part as flower girl, revealed that she seemed to agree by the look on her face.
“Well, let’s get the show on the road,” Emily said.
Grace couldn’t agree more. She was more than ready to become Mrs. Nathan Teague.
After Merline left, they waited a couple of minutes then filed out of the house. Grace grasped Evan’s hand as they headed down the flagstone path Nathan and his brothers had built over the past month leading from the house to that spectacular overlook. While everyone else would just appreciate the spot’s beauty, for her and Nathan it held so much more meaning.
For today, Ryan had taken over Nathan’s guitar, and he played the beautiful song Nathan had written for her, called simply “Grace.” When Nathan had played it for her the night before, tears had flowed at the perfection of it. By strength of will, she didn’t cry now.
As Evan guided her out of the woods, she caught sight of Nathan and her heart started racing, as if it was trying to reach him. He smiled, and she knew she’d never seen a more gorgeous sight.
As she and Evan reached Nathan, Evan tugged on her hand. She bent down to face her son.
“Are you happy, Mom?” he asked.
“Yes. Very, very happy.”
“I’m glad.” He kissed her cheek and went to take his spot next to Hank and Merline.
Grace only half heard the ceremony because all of her attention was focused firmly on Nathan and the love she saw in his eyes, a love that mirrored her own. She did manage to say “I do” at the appropriate spot, causing Nathan’s smile to grow wider. Her heart sped up again when the minister said the words she’d been waiting for all day.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Nathan pulled her closer. “I love you, Mrs. Teague.”
“I love you, Mr. Teague.”
And she kissed him to prove it.
