Isaac ran to a horrified Annabelle and the sobbing children. Thomas kept repeating over and over, “I'm so sorry, Pa, I'm so sorry. I never should have kept the secret.” Isaac pulled his son close.
Ezekiel reached for Abby and kissed her. She could not stop shaking with fear. Austin pulled Loretta into his arms before turning to a dumbfounded Hans, who was shouting. “Anna! Anna, come back.” Hans finally found his feet and ran for the door followed by Austin, Isaac, and Ezekiel.
The men ran through the church corridors after Red and Anna. Breathless, they reached the church steps just in time to see the two riding off on the back of a brown horse. Isaac realized that the horse was Chestnut, Thomas’ pride and joy. All of the other carriages and horses were gone.
Anna clung tightly to Red's waist; Red rode hard with the letter to his future firmly tucked in his breast pocket. He could not believe what had happened. Was she really going with him willingly? Had the Whittakers given up the treasure so easily?
As Austin, Hans and the Whittaker boys helplessly watched the horse disappear in a cloud of dust, what they did not see was the look of sheer and utter excitement on Anna Whittaker's young face.
The End.
