LYRICS to the songs featured in DOWN BEAT:
“Descent of My Mind”
I’ve slipped yet again, lying cradled on the floor,
Falling harder, deeper, faster than before.
I’ve gone too far, I’ve sunk too low,
Stay a while and catch the end of the show.
I need you, I hate you.
I want you, I can’t escape you.
Leave me on my own,
Yet don’t walk away.
Help me, tell me,
Which way do I go?
They’re talking louder.
They’re talking fast.
The things they say,
I just can’t grasp.
Where do I turn?
Who do I believe?
When the demons in my head,
Wear my heart on their sleeve.
I need you, I hate you.
I want you, I can’t escape you.
Leave me on my own,
Yet don’t walk away.
Help me, tell me,
Which way do I go?
The dark before the dawn,
The calm before the storm.
Solace is what I find,
When the sun don’t want to shine.
Love me, hold me.
Tell me you’re here to fix me.
Love me, hold me.
Tell me baby, please,
Tell me you can fucking save me
“Pull Me Under”
Where did you go,
When I needed you most?
You didn’t show,
After I jumped from the coast.
Your whispers, like ice.
Your heart, like stone.
You pull me under, pull me under,
And I can’t figure out how to swim alone.
Where did you go,
When the sorrow cut deep?
Where did you go,
When the road was too steep?
Your whispers, like ice.
Your heart, like stone.
You pull me under, pull me under,
And I can’t figure out how to swim alone.
Don’t come back, don’t you stay,
I told you to keep far, far away.
Don’t you give me those three little words,
Not when I know they’re tainted and cursed.
Keep running, baby.
Turn the other way.
Keep running, baby,
Find yourself and pray.
Your whispers, like ice.
Your heart, like stone.
You pull me under, pull me under,
I’d rather die alone.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
It’s been a while since I’ve done these. And it isn’t because I’m not thankful. More that I felt as though I had started to say the same thing fifteen different ways.
But this time, I have people who can’t escape a mention.
First up, my beta team:
Dee Dartnell, Donna Riley-Stafford, Heather Packer, Jessica Schulze, Lisa Staples, and Tamara McLean.
You girls are always ready to give your honest and unbiased feedback, and I’m truly grateful for what you do. For Down Beat, you went above and beyond. I listened, I made notes, and without a doubt the story is what it is today thanks to your help.
Thank you, ladies.
Secondly, my mo-fos:
You know who you are. My secret squirrels, my illuminati. Everybody needs that person in his or her life who just gets it. Who knows the struggle, and who can give selfless support with no expectation of return. I’m lucky to have several, and dudes, without you I may still be rocking in a corner wondering if Down Beat would ever be good enough.
Thanks, babes.
Last, by no means least, my family:
Kids—I swear one day you’ll fully comprehend what “Mum’s doing her books again” means, but I love that you accept it and are patient with me when I need to finish a sentence before I can come help with something. Love you two immensely. More than I could ever find words for.
Hubs—You never doubt me. You listen, even though you don’t really understand, or care much for books, and tell me what I need to hear: “Just get it done.” Maybe one day you’ll read one again, maybe not, but either way I’ll still pop you in here just to remind you that it’s you and me, babe. We got this. Mwah.
And as always:
A shout out to you, the reader. Without you my book is nothing more than a pretty cover lost in the depths of Amazon. I may write the stories I want to share, but I push myself to the edge with them so that you can love them. I love hearing how you can relate, what parts you loved, which parts made you want to toss your Kindle.
Thank you for your support. Now, and always.
Lots of love,
Max

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
For as long as she can remember, Max has always had a love of the macabre and thought provoking side to life.
Which probably stands to reason why each of her books takes the reader on an emotional journey that not only promises twists, turns, and suspense, but a heart-wrenching journey where her motto holds true:
Love never comes easy.
When she's not lost in an alternate world - fuelled by coffee and the odd sneaky bowl of chocolate (preferably M&Ms) - she spends her days as a wife to a dedicated husband, mother to two rambunctious boys, and an obsessive petrolhead enjoying the muscle on display at the local car shows.
