“So, how come your hair hasn’t changed?” I asked. (It was at stage two – my favorite stage.)
“What do you mean?”
“I mean . . . it looks the same as when we left Mexico. I don’t remember it changing this whole time. Haven’t you been sending it to Locks of Love?”
“No,” she said, shaking her head. “When you got diagnosed I decided to keep it the same. I thought that maybe it would help to keep you from getting so confused.”
I laughed out loud and I think I pulled a stitch or something because it really hurt.
“It didn’t help much!” I said. She smiled back at me. “Actually, now that I think about it, that’s probably what’s wrong with me in the first place.”
“What do you mean?”
“I think that’s why you started cutting off all your hair way back in preschool,” I said. “Just so you could mess with my head.”

IT WAS DARK . . . or maybe my eyes were closed. Laci was holding my hand and talking to me. Something about Gabby.
I wanted to let her know that I was back so I tried to say her name, but my mouth was so dry.
Laci kept talking. Now she was saying something about my mom and my dad . . . something about Greg and Mr. White. It was hard to concentrate on what she was saying because I was trying so hard to talk.
“Laci . . .” I finally managed. My voice sounded so hoarse.
“David!” she cried and I felt her hand on my face. She kissed me. “I love you so much . . .”
“I love you, too.”
“But I want you to know that it’s okay,” she said, squeezing my hand. “You don’t have to stay. You can go to Jesus, David. It’s okay. Go see Gabby and your mom and your dad and Mr. White–”
“You’ll be okay,” I stated.
“Yes,” she said. She was crying. “I’ll be okay . . . I promise. I’ll be okay.”
I believed her.
“Go see Greg,” she said. “Go see Jesus . . .”
“I see him,” I told her.
“Who?” she cried.
I wondered why she sounded so surprised.
“You see who?” she asked again. “Jesus? Greg?”
But my voice wouldn’t work anymore, so I just nodded at her.
And I think I smiled.
And then I went.

Will Tanner ever commit his heart to the Lord? Does Jordan have Huntington’s Disease? What happens to Laci after David dies? And what in the world has been going on with Amber?
Although Gone is the final book to be told by David, it is not the last book in the Chop, Chop series. All of these questions (and more) will be answered in Book 7, Not Quickly Broken, and in Book 8, Alone. I sincerely hope that you will join Jordan and Tanner, respectively, for these last two novels – I look forward to sharing them with you!
