Nick of Time Page 20

by Julianne Q Johnson

I'm glad I stopped. No telling how bad it would have been with the little old lady sleeping downstairs while the fire burned above. The whole thing reminds me of a rescue I did back when I was cursed involving a sobbing woman and the tiniest Yorkie I've ever seen.

Back in the chicken limo, I make my way to the office and trade the limo for my Impala.

It's been five years since I went to Ireland to meet the Sidhe and my life has changed immensely. It's as if I lead a charmed life. Not two months after we came back from Ireland, I bought a lottery ticket on a whim. I didn't win the big prize, but I won enough to buy a little house for Daphne and me.

It was also enough to start my own business. I finally put my business degree to good use. Callaghan Limo Service is doing very well. When we started, it was only me, Todd, and a couple of nice used limousines. Now we have twenty-five drivers and twenty limos of various styles. I don't usually drive. I take care of the business side of things. The chicken limo is Todd's baby. He simply loves the thing. I thought it was ridiculous, but he talked me into purchasing it a year ago. I have to admit he was right about this one. The chicken limo is our most requested car. I don't know if it's because of the chicken or Todd.

I took the run tonight because Todd and Quan are on their honeymoon. It took years, but Quan's family finally came around and accepted my best friend into their ranks. Todd's a great guy and he adores Quan. It was only a matter of time.

Daphne and I got married a couple of years ago. We live in the very house in Mooresville Quan's uncle let us stay in when Daphne and I were on the run from her crazy stalker. We love the house and we eat at Gray's Cafeteria altogether too often. Most days, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I wonder if the Queen of the Sidhe has something to do with my good fortune.

The curse is gone, mostly. A few times a year I find myself in a situation like today. I've thought about it a lot and decided maybe there are some events that need someone like me to put right. I don't mind. Now that it isn't an exhausting daily occurrence, anyway. I never minded helping people…I only wanted to be able to have a life as well.

Sometimes, I think the only way I could have found all the happiness that I now have is to have gone through what I did. A person has to go through the hard stuff to truly appreciate the good stuff in life.

It was my curse that brought Daphne into my life, and now I can't imagine life without her. I've ended up grateful to the Sidhe and now instead of cursed, I feel lucky. Every damn day.

Andrew Hamilton believes in friendship, good theatre, and that Twizzlers are an underrated member of the candy family. He does not believe in magic. His current play is going great, until the actors playing the zombie horde turn homicidal. Zombie madness spreads through the city and the creepers have one thing in common: they all want to kill Andrew. Magic not only exists, it has rules and deadlines. If he can keep ahead of his stumbling and drooling fan club until teatime, he might survive.

  They're coming for you, Andrew.
