by Cassandra Clark

It is over and the crowds are dispersing. The yard outside the palace of Westminster is emptying. The prioress, her baggage-train and her many followers are on the move. Hildegard says farewell to Guy and Sir John then joins the train with her children and her hounds. On a fine day at the end of July she sets out on the journey north that will change her life forever.

As for the achievements of the Commons, it is predicted by the Westminster soothsayers that when everyone has gone home to the shires, John of Gaunt will make sure that most of their gains are lost. And so begins the long and bitter battle for the Crown of England.

If you like detection and adventure set in a firm historical context, or simply want to read more about Hildegard and her times you can see my website www.cassandraclark.co.uk where you can also find out about the seven books in the series from Hangman Blind to The Scandal of the Skulls. Most are published by St Martin’s Press but you can download all of them as ebooks. The eighth in the series - The Alchemist at Netley Abbey – is already brewing and Hildegard herself can be followed @nunsleuth where you’ll find more snips and bits about her medieval world. Happy reading!
