“Okay, guv.”
Helena went upstairs, putting off going to see Yarworth to give him the pointless breakdown of the case’s progression. He never gave a shit, but she felt better for doing it, regardless.
In the incident room, she briefed Olivia and Phil on what she’d discovered. “Ol, Louise is going to email you a list of girls who’ve jumped off the cliff over the years. I need you to do a bit of poking around to see if they knew Franklin Marston, or his name now, Marshall Rogers. Phil, can you look into Mr Jeffs’ death, please, and ring Mrs Featherstone at social services to see if she can possibly give you a list of people who fostered Marshall. If she can’t, don’t worry, I’ll apply for a warrant. I’m also interested to know what you found out about the brakes on Mr Walker’s car. Anything?”
“Nothing we can use,” Phil said.
Helena sighed. Marshall was probably going to get off that murder charge, as well as Mrs Walker’s death, as her doctor and the hospital were standing firm that it had been a heart attack. Maybe they’d never know whether Marshall had killed them. Maybe it had been a lucky coincidence, and Marshall had used their deaths to scare Jacob, Suzie, Callie, and Emma into doing what he wanted.
“Okay, I’m off with Andy to see Jacob and Robbie, so catch you later.”
She met Andy at the front desk, and they got in the car. As they drove to the safe house flats, Helena thought about the many people Marshall had murdered. Why had he done it? When she got back to the station later, she’d delve into his past, try to piece together why it had all gone so wrong for him—and why he felt murder was his only option.
And also why he felt he had to be the man in the house.
Thank you so much for reading The Man in the House. We truly appreciate it and hope you enjoyed!
