  Chapter One

Kerry thought if she stood just so far away, she could watch and she wouldn’t be discovered. Kerry was never asked to attend one of the dances and never would be, considering her station, but she was curious. “Curiosity killed the cat,” her mother told her, so it was a good thing she wasn’t a cat—she was a werewolf.

The area they chose for the dance was an empty lot in the middle of a suburb. She bet it was the kind of place the neighbor kids played baseball at when it was high summer like this. Now the fenced space was protected by a “don’t look” magic to keep the normal humans from noticing the flaming torches and glowing fire pit.

Kerry crept up to the fence, peering through a gap in the wood as pairs of men and women danced naked. The glow of their skin under the fire light was erotic with beads of dewy sweat cascading over muscular arms and thighs in a mesmerizing way. One man sat alone in the middle of all this. Kerry thought he was a fine example of manhood—hard muscular planes, thick biceps, tapered waist and powerful looking thighs; then Kerry got to his face. He had high cheek bones, full lips, and dark eyebrows that stopped his face from being too beautiful, too feminine. He had his eyes shut so she couldn’t see what color they were under the fall of his thick black hair, curled and tangled with sweat as he sat with his back to the fire pit.

The music was a thrumming base in her ears. She got caught up with the sway and rhythm of the dancing, her breathing slow but slightly excited. The couples fell to the floor all around him, the men entering the women, pounding into them, in a frenzy of heat and music and flesh. Some of the men had their lovers on their backs and some on all fours. Only two of the women made it to the position of dominance, riding their mates. Moans filled the air as the people around him coupled.

Electricity shot through Kerry, heat and wetness pooling between her legs. She gasped, touching her middle. Her belly fluttered and her body under her clothes burned. She couldn’t understand why that should be. Even though it was one of the hottest summers on record, she was coolly dressed in a short sleeve T-shirt, light cotton shorts, and beaded sandals. Her shorts were growing damp between her thighs as she clamped them together.

The man in the middle stood up slowly his hips swaying with the beat. Kerry watched a bead of sweat trail down his chest, curve around his belly and she gulped. He was indeed a very fine specimen of manhood and virility. His member was long, smooth, and thick sticking out from his body in full display.

Werewolves, on the whole, don’t really care about nudity. They have fewer inhibitions when it came to their bodies. Watching him dance and his member dance with him made her cheeks flush and her thighs grow even wetter. Kerry licked her dry lips and stared as one after another the women climaxed and someone entered the circle.

The woman was a statuesque blonde, very thin with small plum-like boobs that jiggled as she walked. She walked up to the dancing man completely calm, kissed his mouth and then lay on the ground before him with her arms above her head and one leg bent with her thighs apart. She was the one chosen to be his mate.

Werewolves could have sex with humans with no problems, in fact most did to get some practice in but when like met with like, they became a mated pair. Inseparable and married as far as pack law was concerned. The couple usually had a proper wedding after, for the human charade.

The woman before him flexed her hip in anticipation as the last couple let out their cry of completion and the music hit a crescendo before falling away abruptly. All eyes were on the man and woman in the middle as they all watched them mate. The thought of all those eyes on them while they rose and fell together in passion made the heat in Kerry’s body spike. A soft moan fell from her lips as her core pulsated. She would have to go home and pleasure herself.

The man’s eyes snapped open. They were an engaging amber color and his nose sniffed the air. He started towards his woman but stopped, sniffing again. He walked passed her, completely ignoring her. There were startled noises from the watchers. Kerry realized there were more clothed spectators at the sides.

The blonde woman rolled onto her side and watched him continue walking away. His eyes fell on the gap in the fence—right on Kerry, who gasped. He was running now and preparing to shift.

Kerry stumbled backwards, falling out of her sandals onto her bottom. She was discovered, and would be in so much trouble. They’d have to wait a whole month to redo the ceremony. That was if the approaching wolf didn’t just tear her throat out. A black as pitch wolf leapt over the fence, landing just inches from where she sat sprawled. His eyes surveyed her and his nose wrinkled as he inhaled. His face turned to her open thighs and he growled, stalking forward. A big wolfy tongue ran across his canines. He was going to eat her.

Kerry scrambled to her feet and ran. She glanced back over her shoulder to see that the black wolf looked confused but then he followed her. If he caught her, he’d drag her before the elders to punish her and her family would be shamed. Damn her curiosity. Maybe she could out run him. She was pretty fast. She pulled her T-shirt over her head, tossing it and then her shorts, leaping forward as a human one minute and then hitting the ground as a wolf on four legs the next. Kerry was a blur of white speed as she ran through alleys, between houses, and through a field or two. She hoped she had lost him since her best talent as a wolf was her speed. However, he had her scent and could follow her anywhere.

Kerry ran herself into a dead end, a chain link fence surrounding the very school she attended as a girl. The only way out was a gate with a gap above it. As a wolf it was about twice her height and as a human she could have climbed over it no problem but she was tired from running. If she went human again to get over the gate, she doubted she would have the energy to go wolf again so soon. She needed her wolf speed on the other side to get clean away. She’d have to try and jump it as was.

She took two steps back, ignoring the insistent ache between her legs and the pad of his footfalls behind her and darted for it, calling her leap a little too early. Kerry caught the gate with her middle, knocking the breath out of her. Her back legs scrambled to get purchase to push her over but she was stuck. Her energy melted away as did her fur, leaving her hanging over the gate exhausted, and—to the male wolf behind her—one big offering.

The sounds of four feet behind her became two. She braced herself to be scolded, for being called a dirty voyeur, as her core cried out its need. His large,
warm hands grabbed her hips but not in a way Kerry thought conducive to helping her up. Then he slid inside her in one hard, long thrust.

Kerry gasped. Her body was more than wet and willing to accommodate him; it yearned for it. Her entire world shifted, she didn’t know him but she didn’t care. She wanted him to take away the heat inside her and fill her.

  He withdrew his hips.

“Yes?” his deep voice asked. Kerry arched her back like a wanton.

  “Oh, God yes.”

He thrust back inside her again.

Her head dropped, her passage convulsed, and her breath escaped her in a moan. He filled her so very completely and she wanted that…completeness. Her body demanded it.

Still buried inside her, he lifted her body and pressed her full frontal against the fence. Kerry wrapped her fingers through and around the links. Her breasts pressed into the cold metal as he held her with one arm around her waist while thrusting inside her harder and faster. He growled primitively. His other hand trailed up the side of her body, over her breast, and his fingers curled over hers where she held the fence. His masculine body and scent blanketed her.

The heat she felt in her belly while she watched him dance was nothing to the exquisite inferno she felt with his cock inside her. She moaned her pleasure for him which made his whole body vibrate with a growl. He leaned close to the back of her neck.

“Mine,” declared a deep-throated voice gone over completely to growl. “Mine.” His teeth came down on a tender spot on the back of her neck. The next time he growled the word it vibrated over her skin, like a command seeping in through every pore. She was his. He claimed her.

His hips increased in tempo, pounding inside her with all the passion of his animal. Kerry was his—his mate. He chased her down, bested her, and took her. He was a strong alpha male and worthy of his prize.

Kerry panted as the delicious weight built up in her core. She tightened around him . He grunted, releasing her neck so he could focus on what he was doing. Both his hands slid back to her hips thrusting once, twice—then on the third time, he brought her screaming. He howled as her tightening muscles brought him his own release, spilling his seed inside her.

Kerry’s knees buckled. They fell side by side onto the ground, breathing heavy as they de-coupled. Kerry rolled onto her back in the grass and stared up at the stars. Her partner was the first to get his breath back. He rolled onto his side, propped on an elbow, and looked down at her. He stroked his hand possessively over the woman who was now his.

“So,” he said with a wicked, easy smile. “My name’s Caleb. What’s yours?”

  Chapter Two

When others found them, they were draped in blankets in case some passerby saw their nudity and thought to ask questions. An older man in a well cut suit—who Kerry decided had to be a relative of Caleb’s—simultaneously chastised everyone and apologized profusely.

No one talked to her so she stood huddled in her blanket by the fence, trying to ignore the ache between her legs. Kerry felt so full with Caleb inside her and now it felt empty. She became mated without intending to and how was Kerry going to explain to her human boyfriend that she couldn’t see him anymore. Kerry was deep in thought and didn’t notice the arrival of the statuesque blonde wearing a creamy white blouse and grey pencil skirt until she was right in front of her and slapped her across the face.

“You stupid little bitch. What the fuck were you doing?”

Kerry held her sore face stunned. Tears filled her eyes.

“I…I was just curious. I don’t understand what happened.”

“You weren’t invited. Unmated females are never invited.”

Kerry slowly found her nerve. “You’re an unmated female and you were there. I didn’t mean any harm. I’m not exactly fucking happy about this either.”

The statuesque blonde had glacial blue eyes like icy daggers ready to strike. She turned her anger onto the man, Caleb, who stood just down the fence from them.

“Why Caleb? I was right there. Why?”

Caleb stuck out his jaw, tired of being yelled at.

“Honestly, she just smelled better. Warm.” He licked his lips, looking at Kerry. “Wet and inviting.”

The blonde growled, grabbing the edges of Kerry’s blanket and pulling it open so she could see her naked body. Kerry was shorter, slightly more round and curvy, with larger breasts and wider hips.

  “She’s fat!”

“Hey,” said Kerry, pulling the blanket tight to cover herself.

Caleb stalked closer to them, letting a growl roll over his tongue. The blonde took a step backwards after hearing him make that sound at her.

“She’s my mate, Avrilyne. Be polite.”

“I should have been your mate,” she whined. The edges of her eyes watered. Avrilyne covered her face with her hands to cry.

Kerry noticed everyone was watching the three of them. An older woman—who looked very much like Avrilyne and must have been her mother—led her away to sit in a saloon car parked on the nearby street. A man in his early fifties approached and Kerry recognized him as, not only the town mayor, but the head of pack affairs.

“Young lady,” he said, addressing her. “You need to understand the severity of what’s gone on here. You were someplace you were not supposed to be. You spoiled a mating between two prominent families.”

“Yes, sir but I don’t understand what happened. I was just watching. I didn’t do anything.”

“Your scent drew Caleb away. When you ran, Caleb followed. Intentional or not, you led him away where no one could stop you from coupling. If I believed you planned this, I would bring down severe punishment on both you and your family.”

  Kerry looked stricken.

“Oh no, sir. I promise you I didn’t plan it. I have or I did have a boyfriend.”

  He grunted in acknowledgment.

“A norm? Well you’re going to have to give that up. You have a mate now. This was supposed to be a black-silver marriage.”

Werewolves were divided into cast by the color of their fur in wolf form. Black was top so Kerry knew Caleb was someone of great prominence. Next came silver and then brown. The marriages were decided by which color was in decline that year. If a black and silver wolf mated you got black cubs. Black and brown you got silver cubs. Silver and Brown you got brown cubs. The man rubbed his temples, trying to find an upside.

“Are you at least silver yourself?”

Kerry shook her head and the man sighed.

“That’s going to unbalance things for a generation, maybe two. You brown wolves just can’t seem to learn your place. Why couldn’t you wait for your own ceremony? You’re of age so it wouldn’t be long.”

“I wasn’t supposed to have one,” admitted Kerry sheepishly.

“What? What are you babbling about, girl?”

Kerry braced herself like she was about to receive a blow.

“My parents were mated out-of-ceremony, sir. They’re both brown but I’m not.”

The older man’s eyes widened and he gaped.

  “What? What are you saying?”

“She’s saying…” said Caleb, placing his hands on her shoulders reassuringly, “she’s a white wolf.”

“This is a disaster,” he cried, stomping off to break the bad news to the spectators out of ear shot.

When two black, two silver, or two brown mated out-of-ceremony, meaning the couple mated for love instead of breeding, they ran the risk of producing a white wolf child. Nine times out of ten, they just got a child the same as themselves which wasn’t welcome but forgivable. A white wolf child of such unions was banned from mating into the group because the white wolves are cursed creatures in their lore. White wolves more often than not married humans, having norm babies because there was no one alive anymore who knew what you got if a white mixed with the other colors, only that it was very undesirable.

The man in the well-cut suit who yelled at Caleb a lot earlier was having palpitations, so th
e crowd focused on him.

Kerry turned and faced Caleb. “You saw what color I am when I shifted. Why did you keep chasing?”

“Honestly?” He said with a wicked grin, “I was too busy thinking about this.”

Caleb ran his hand down her belly, between her thighs and then pushed two fingers inside her. Kerry shuddered.

“I wasn’t lying when I said you smelled better. Sweeter.” He flexed his fingers inside her, making her fall against him for support as her knees threatened to buckle. “Even now, I can smell it. Your body is more responsive and wetter. It wants me more.” Kerry moaned as his fingers teased her. “It was more inviting than the acrid, cold smell Avrilyne gave off. I wanted to bury myself in your warmth so I did.”

A battered Chevy that Kerry knew well screeched to a halt on the street. She pushed Caleb’s hand away forcefully as a man and woman got out. The woman was short and stout with a halo of the same red gold hair as Kerry. The man was whip thin, with mousey brown hair and a pissed look on his face. The woman bustled over to Kerry, taking her face in her palms.

“Oh, my baby. Are you alright? I bought you a change of clothes. Are you hurt? Scratches? Bites? Bruises? Mrs. Abbanathy has invoked the gossip chain already. Leanne called me.” Leanne was the mother of Kerry’s best friend Susan. Kerry peeled the hands back from her face. Caleb smiled at his mate indulgently and ran his gaze up and down his mate.

“Momma, I’m fine. Thanks for the clothes.” Kerry took the offered plastic bag and was happy to pull on a new pair of shorts and a fresh T-shirt.

Kerry’s father walked right up to Caleb and slugged him in the jaw.

“I don’t care who you are, no body deflowers my baby,” he growled angrily. Caleb smelled the motor oil on the man’s hand as it connected with his face. He felt the pain rocket through the bone, his head spun. The world seemed to rush around his ears like buzzing insects as he wobbled, lost his balance, and fell to the ground. He tasted dirt. His first reaction was amazement. No one ever hit him like that before. Caleb looked up and at Kerry’s father and flexed his jaw.
