She nods. “Okay. Let’s do this, but you really have to take me to eat afterward. I’m starving.”
I laugh. “Okay. I guess I can handle that.”
Once we pull up to Gibbs’ place, we walk up the short path to the front door and knock. I see Jade look out the glass and swing the door open. She gives me a shy smile. “Hey, Jacob.”
“Hey, Jade. I came by to double check the security system my guys hooked up,” I say, moving inside with Roxanne behind me.
“Sure. Thanks, by the way, for doing this,” she says, walking me over to one of the panic panels.
She huffs and looks to Roxanne. “Hey, I’m Jade.” Gibbs makes his way into the room and motions for me to follow him. As we leave, I hear Roxanne introduce herself.
We reach the main panel and I look over it. “So, anything else come up?”
“No, it’s like radio silence,” he replies with a quietness.
I turn on a couple more features on the panels. “Well, if they try to come in here, you’ll be prepared. Just make sure you set it every time you come in. But the panic button will call regardless if you hit it.”
He nods. “Thanks again, man. I think it makes Jade feel better.”
“How’s she doing with all of this? She still dating the doctor?”
He shakes his head. “Nah, she dumped him a few days ago. She’s mine now and I’m never letting her go again. I have a feeling he’s going to try to use her to bully me. Chelsea did some digging on him, he’s trying to move up in the ranks.” This is no shock to me. I know all of this, but how does Huck’s wife Chelsea know this?
“So how did Chelsea find this out?”
“Chelsea’s dad used to be some great detective, he worked the case when Kara’s ex got locked up. After he’d beat the hell out of her.” I know some of this, but it was before I moved here. “Chelsea still has a few connections from her ex as well.” Ah, the Russian. That makes sense.
I nod. “All right, well you let me know if you need anything or something goes wrong with the system.”
“Thanks, man. So is that the girl you’ve been seeing?”
“Yeah.” I shrug. “It’s just casual. We’ve known each other a long time. Neither of us are looking for serious so it works.”
Gibbs laughs. “Hey man, whatever works. Most people assume so much shit about Firecracker and me. I get it, man.”
We walk into the room where I hear Jade and Roxanne talking quietly. I wrap my arm around Roxanne’s waist. “Let’s go, babe.”
She grins up at me and then back to Jade, playing the part perfectly. “It was nice meeting you, Jade. Maybe I’ll see you soon.”
Once we are back in my truck, she looks over to me. “So what did Gibbs say?”
“Well, he hadn’t heard much. He knows about as much as we do. Although we’ll need to keep an eye on Huck’s wife, Chelsea. Her dad was a detective around here and her ex has ties to some Russians. The ex was locked up last year after a pile of shit went down. But I’m sure Chelsea, being as resourceful as she is, still has some contacts.”
“Do you think it’s going to be a problem?” She turns to me. “You know what I’m saying. Are we going to have to deal with her?”
I shake my head. “No. Chelsea will check around but I doubt she’ll get in too deep. Especially with the new baby.”
She nods and then sits back in her seat. “Let’s go get some food then. Like I said, I’m fucking starving and I’ve had to listen to bitchy college kids whining about their GPA today. I hate fucking finals.”
~*~*~
It’s been a week and a half with no new intel. I can’t sleep, it’s been too quiet and I know they’re up to something. So I’m sitting here staring at the wall when my phone rings. I see on the caller ID that it’s Raines, I slide my finger across the screen. “Foster.”
“Have you talked with your brother-in-law tonight?”
I sit up quickly. “No, why?”
“Well, it appears we have a player that’s flown under the radar. That player kidnapped Jade Chambers.”
I stand up from couch. “Wait, what?!”
“A Doctor Gavin Jennings.”
“Wait, she was dating that guy.”
“Yes and apparently he’s the nephew of Mike Juarez. Uncle Mike contributed largely to his nephew’s education, but it came at a cost.”
“Where is Jade now?”
“She’s in the hospital. So are Mike Juarez and Gavin Jennings. The other two guys that were with them are dead. She’s doing fine, the other two not so much.” He clears his throat. “A female witnessed the nephew shoving Jade into his car. Traffic cams picked up the car and they followed it to a warehouse district. Once local leos got on scene, they blew the building and ran in a panel van.” Leo is a common abbreviation for law enforcement officer. “The van later hit a light pole and flipped. Jade is very lucky, but Juarez is in the perfect spot for us to talk to him.”
“I’ll go to the hospital and check things out, see what I can find out.”
“Okay. I think with them incapacitated, this may be over.”
I shake my head. “I don’t think so. Juarez has to have a backer. Rox and I found some inconsistencies in the old reports.”
“Fine, go in and talk to him, see if you can figure anything out. Keep Gilliland away from him. She’d kill him. They had to remove her from Lowe’s courtroom years ago. She beat the hell out of him.”
“Okay. I’ll keep you posted.”
Pulling on my boots, I grab my gun and tuck it into a holster in the small of my back, under the tail of my shirt, and head out the door.
Once I’m at the hospital, I find everyone in the surgical waiting room. “Hey, how’s it going?” I ask Sly.
“They just came out. She’s going to be okay, just a lot of therapy from all the broken bones.”
I nod. “Good. Good, and the other guys?”
He shrugs. “I think they’re in ICU, they’re keeping us away.” He looks at me confused. “How did you find out we were here?”
Shit. I never called Lox to get an in. “I’m friends with a local cop, I’ve done some contract work for him. He knows I’m close to you guys. Thought everyone could use a friendly face.”
He nods. “Oh. Okay. They’re going to move her soon. Gibbs and Eve are beside themselves. They had to give Kara a small sedative. It’s been nuts. That damn Juarez guy freakin’ told Gibbs what he did to his parents over the fucking phone. What a sick bastard.”
I sit down and motion for him to do the same. “All right. Well if you need anything, let me know.”
A few hours later, after Jade is settled, I make my way around ICU and find a guarded cubicle. Good thing I still have a set of credentials. Let’s hope these locals don’t look too hard at them. They’re limited, but most people wouldn’t know the difference. I flash them to the guards. “Agent Foster, I need to speak with this patient.”
One of the officers grunts. “Good luck. He’s not awake yet.”
I step in the room and sure enough, he’s not waking up anytime soon it appears. I’ll have to go speak with the nephew. I make my way to his cubicle. “Gavin Jennings. Agent Foster, CIA. I need to ask you a few questions.”
He grunts, “Not without my attorney.”
I nod. “Fine, just remember, your uncle’s associates will consider you both loose ends. If you ever want the option of witness protection, you’ll need to cooperate.”
I turn, leaving the room and then the hospital.
CHAPTER 10
ROXANNE
“Seriously, I can’t believe you didn’t call me to go with you,” I tell Jacob.
He puts his hands up in defense. “First off, Raines said not to. Second, I thought you didn’t want to run into the rest of the crowd and third, the asshole was still knocked out. I don’t need you offing him before we can talk to him.”
“Ugh. Fine. Next time you don’t call me, though, you can start sucking your own dick,” I tell him, walking to my b
edroom. It’s midnight and he’s just decided to show up.
As soon as we are in my bedroom, he grabs me up and tosses me to the bed. “Well now, if it was possible to suck my own dick, I would never need a woman again.” He removes his clothes and crawls up the bed behind me. He flips me so that I’m on my knees facing the headboard. “Now hold on to the headboard and don’t let go,” he rumbles in my ear. He slides the nightgown I’m wearing up my back, ripping the panties I’m wearing off. Two fingers enter me, “Oh, already so wet.” Taking the fingers out of me, he runs them up over my asshole, causing me to squirm. I feel him move behind me and I hear the distinct sound of the wrapper being removed from the condom. I feel the head of his cock pressed into my pussy. As he enters, I moan, and pretty soon he’s buried inside of me. “Okay, I’m going to move now, remember what I said. Hang on. Don’t let go.”
He pulls almost all the way out and then slams into me. His hands locked on to my hips. “Oh god!” He repeats this over and over until I’m screaming. The neighbors may call the cops because they think I’m being murdered. Suddenly, he pulls totally out. “What the?” But before I can finish my question, I feel him lick me from front to back. He continues to lick, suck and nip until I’m once again screaming. He pulls away and I start to let go of the bed, until there’s a sting to my ass from his hand.
“Don’t let go.” He smacks my ass again. “Do you understand?”
“Yes,” I moan out as he massages the cheek. I’m panting when he slams into me again. Running his hand over my ass, his thumb rubs against my asshole. I feel him push in and my body goes into over drive. “Oh god! Fuck! Jacob!”
“You like that?”
All I can do is nod at this point. He slams into me over and over again with his thumb moving ever so gently. The buildup is too much. “I’m coming!” I scream out as he picks up the pace of his thrusts. I feel his body go rigid as he slams into me one final time. “Oh shit!” He pulls out and my body drops to the bed with my hands still clinging to the headboard.
He chuckles and leans down. “You can let go now.”
My hands drop and my body collapses. “Damn, Jacob.”
He wiggles his eyebrows. “That good, huh?”
“Damn.” That’s all I’ve got at the moment.
He laughs and falls onto the bed next to me. “Good to know I’ve rendered you speechless.”
“I’m not speechless, just tired at the moment. Now I’m going to sleep. You know your way out,” I say with my eyes shut.
“And if I want another round? Say, in an hour or so?”
“Then I suppose you can stay as long as you leave me alone so I can nap,” I mumble.
He chuckles as he pulls the covers up over both of us. I would love to be a smartass and say something smart to him, but my eyes are far too heavy.
~*~*~
My phone rings on the way home from campus. It’s already been a shitty day. I had a meeting with the heads of the department about the budget and several students begging for a grade change. “Hello?”
“You are not going to fucking believe this shit!” Jacob yells through the phone.
“What?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m on Langley headed home.”
“I’ll meet you there.”
Before I can reply, he hangs up.
Picking up my speed, I weave through traffic. Coming into my neighborhood, I slow down due to the elderly people. Seeing Jacob’s truck already sitting in front of my house, I slide up in my driveway. As soon as I’m out of my car, he walks me to the front door and we enter quickly.
“Juarez is dead!”
“What?!” I scream.
“Some assholes from the ‘family’ came in during the shift change last night. Slipped him some med to give him a heart attack. They did get caught before they left by the local leos.” He finally sits down, shaking his head. “What I want to know is how they even knew he was there.”
“Do you think there is a leak within this department?”
“No. Two people come to mind. Gibbs and Chelsea.”
“Huh? You don’t think?”
“He killed Gibbs’ parents in cold blood, then he made sure he told Jade and Gibbs about it.” We’d found out after Jade woke up that he’d told her in detail what he’d done to them. Even so much as to say she reminded him of Gibbs’ mother.
I shake my head. “Shit. What now?”
“I told Raines. I still think there are more players in this game. The shit we found in the files, the family coming in to kill him. We’ve got to stay on it.”
He’s right. This may be over for Gibbs, but that doesn’t mean it’s over for me. I made a lot of enemies with that case.
“We need to talk to Gibbs, find out if he contacted anyone and who he contacted. Otherwise we could end up with several different fucking crime families storming into town,” I say, grabbing my cigarettes and walking to the front door.
CHAPTER 11
JACOB
I’ve been watching and waiting now for almost two weeks. Jade is home, Gibbs won’t leave her side, but it appears today she’s kicked him out. Well, they’re going out. He’s headed to the gym and it appears she’s going with him. That’s not the opportunity I was hoping for.
Another week goes by and he’s finally leaving her alone at the house. I follow him to the gym and send him a text that I need to talk with him. I casually pull into the gym parking lot a few minutes after him so he doesn’t know I’ve been tailing him. I call him over to my truck. “Gibbs.” He comes over. “Get in for a minute.”
Once he’s inside, he looks at me with concern. “What’s going on? Is it something with my security system?”
“No. We need to discuss Mike Juarez, but first I need to talk with you about a couple of things. Things I’m hoping you’ll keep to yourself for the time being.”
He nods with a scared look on his face.
“Gibbs, I used to work for the CIA. I’m now a contractor for them. I still work difficult cases. Roxanne used to work for ATF, she worked undercover trying to take Mike down for years. When they started showing up around here, I had to alert her and watch you. They’ve killed your family, Roxanne’s entire family and her old team. Now, I need for you to tell me honestly if you had anything to do with Mike Juarez’s death. I need to know who you contacted if you contacted anyone. I’m not taking you in or anything like that. As far as I’m concerned, you did the world a favor and you beat Roxanne to it, but I need to know what kind of war we could have on our hands.”
He takes a nervous breath. “What the fuck, man? Does your sister know this?”
“No. She thinks I was in the Army and then went to work doing contracting. So until I get ready to talk about all of this with her and the rest of my family, you keep your fucking mouth shut. You got me?” I say with a coldness.
He nods. “Yeah, man. I get it.” He clears his throat. “I had Chelsea do some digging with her connections. Found out that Lowe is still calling some shots from prison. Wasn’t too happy to hear that Mike was wanting to branch out on his own. Lowe has a new crew forming in Dade County so Chels made sure that some of her old contacts in Miami got word to them about where Mike was. I don’t think we’ll have blow back. She seemed to really trust who she told and she wouldn’t tell me who that was, before you ask.”
I nod. “Okay. Now I need you to get little miss investigator Chelsea to meet with me. Tell her I know. I’ll explain the rest.”
He looks at the floor. “Yeah. Okay.” He rubs his face. “I just couldn’t let him live. You know he told Jade what he did to my parents? How my mom screamed and fought? He planned to do the same to my firecracker. I couldn’t let that ever happen. Not even a chance.”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “I get it and I’m happy for you, but that could’ve been really stupid, man. Don’t ever do shit like that again. You call me.”
He nods. “I gotta go train for the fundraiser coming up.”
&
nbsp; “All right, man, put this out of your head. Just get me a meeting with Chelsea, without her guard dog.”
He nods, jumping out of the truck and jogging into the gym.
A few days later, I’m sitting in Chelsea’s living room while Huck is at the gym.
I’ve already explained to her what I do and why I’m here. She laughs. “I knew something didn’t add up with you.”
“What do you mean?”
She sits back while folding baby clothes. “I’ve been around law men too long. I know the characteristics. You don’t really have a tell, per say, but you do have the mannerisms. I can’t explain it. Just go with it, okay?”
“Okay. Now, I need you to talk with your contact. I need to know a name. Who is over the operation in Miami? What is their business? Any info your guy can get on them without raising flags. I finally got this out of here, thanks to you and Gibbs. I want it to stay out and I don’t need you or your family’s blood on my hands.”
She sighs. “I didn’t want him to do it, but I understood it, I guess.” She sits, pondering. “I’ll see what I can find out. It may take me a few days. I can’t always get in touch with my source.”
I nod. “Okay, just get it to me when you can.” I stand up and walk to the door. “And like I said, I am going to tell my sister, just let me do it on my terms.”
She nods and I let myself out.
I really do need to take time and talk to my sister and Lox about all of this, but when and how? Also, there is the little matter of Roxanne and Lox. I can’t imagine that’s going to be a happy reunion. Plus my sister, who is calm most of the time, may go crazy about that shit.
~*~*~
“I don’t have much time to talk,” Chelsea says quickly. “I have to get ready and meet Huck at the gym in forty-five minutes. He wants us there before the fight because of the crowd.”
Tonight is the annual fundraiser that Marco’s Gym puts on for the community. It started a few years ago when Chelsea’s mom had cancer and Huck didn’t want Chels stripping anymore to pay bills. Now, they have people nominate a local family in need. I have it on good authority that this year it may end up helping two families with as much as they have already raised.
