I blushed. He had his way with me three times in the middle of the night which was why I was so sleepy in the first place. I had my way with him as well and was quite satisfied at the moment.
Logan’s phone rang.
“Yes?” he answered.
He listened for a minute.
“Well if you’d like to be in on that I’m sure it would be fine Brock but Mick is just needing an assessment, not a bunch of extraneous information. They do have their own think tank. I’m not sure rocking their little boat as you put it, would be necessary or appreciated. Do you want to just send it over to me when we get there?”
He listened for another minute. “Yes, she’s fine. We’re going to see the doctor today.”
“No, we’re not naming the baby after you. Get off my phone.”
He hung up and sighed.
My phone beeped. I picked it up and looked at it. Text from Brock.
Brock: Brock is an outstanding boy name, I’m just saying you two could consider it.
I showed the text to Logan and laughed when he made a face.
“Under no circumstances is our child ever to be named Brock.”
I smiled at him, “No worries. It’s going to be a girl anyway.”
Logan groaned and got up from the table, taking his oatmeal with him.
“Kate you’re going to curse us if you keep talking like that. Boys. Let’s talk about boys all the way there.”
I nibbled on my toast and snickered a few times to myself as I listened to him move around the cabin. Bells saw the empty chair beside me and jumped up to it. She gave me a sideways look.
“What do you think Bells? Boy or girl?”
She hopped into my lap and started rubbing on my chest then stopped suddenly and meowed. She was obviously casting her vote but which way it went was anyone’s guess.
I scooted her off my lap after rubbing her behind her ears and went to the kitchen with my dishes. Logan had already washed everything and I felt bad about leaving them in the sink.
Wandering into the bedroom I saw his duffel bag and suitcase up against the wall.
I suppose it was time to let him move his things down here. Obviously, he wasn’t waiting for an invitation. The shower shut off and he came out of the bathroom without a stitch on him. Water rolled down his body as he toweled his head and then his chest.
I could definitely get used to seeing that every day.
He smirked at me then dressed. By the time he was done I was hot and extremely bothered again.
“Coat Kaitlyn. We need to go.”
I snapped out of my fantasies and headed to the door.
Later. Lots of sexy-time later.
* * *
We arrived at the doctor’s office on time. Although it had been a nasty drive. It wasn’t particularly hard in the Jeep, but there were very few vehicles on the road with us due to the amount of snow accumulation.
When we drove down in to the city, there wasn’t as much snow and what they did have, had been plowed already. The journey had taken us nearly an hour and a half, when normally it would have been only forty-five minutes max.
The offices we walked into were very nice. It was on the third floor of a building that had family practice offices, breast exams, radiology, labs and a slew of other medical needs.
When it was our turn, we met Dr. Meyers, who seemed to have an immunity to Logan’s good looks because she didn’t glance at him at all. I loved her already.
She performed a basic exam. Which was weird with Logan standing in the hallway. It would have been weirder with him in the room, which was what he wanted to do, but Dr. Meyers had kicked him out. He had argued with her and she had pulled authority by telling him that she was the doctor in charge of the baby, not the other way around. To which he got irritated and started citing his credentials. It was ridiculous. I finally told him that if he wanted boys so much then he was going to have to wait in the hallway.
He had complied grudgingly, with both of us scowling at him.
Still, he was here. Which was weird in and of itself.
“Let’s take a look at that baby, shall we?” she asked.
I clutched at the thin covering of paper they used in the exams. “Uhm, can we have Logan come back in?”
“Of course, Dr. Matthews can come back in. As long as he behaves.” She smiled and walked out of the room.
Logan walked back in when Dr. Meyers returned. He looked contrite for the moment. No doubt Dr. Meyers had laid down the law with him again. Unlike the clinic or the hospital he sometimes worked at, this wasn’t his territory and he was clearly out of his natural authoritative realm.
He took my hand as he looked down at me and moved some hair off my neck.
“Okay, so it’s about time for this anyway,” Dr. Meyers said, while squirting some clear, cold lubricant on my stomach. “We won’t be able to determine the sex today but you can at least have a sneak peek at the baby.”
Logan mumbled, “We’re having boys anyway. Kaitlyn promised me.”
“I did no such thing, Logan.”
Dr. Meyers interrupted. “You know that’s not how it works Dr. Matthews. Stop being an idiot.”
Logan’s “hmpf” in reply was audible but he didn’t say anything else while she turned on the machine.
We both watched the screen as she started pressing a device against my stomach. It didn’t make much sense to me as she passed it back and forth a couple of times. She moved over to a spot and there was a round circle that appeared.
“Ah, gotcha. The baby is hiding.”
“Is it okay?” I asked nervously. That dip in the pond was still worrying me.
“Give me a minute. Oh, what’s this?”
She readjusted and moved the device lower.
The image on the screen showed something that resembled a peanut but clearly had a head, arms, and legs. Very active legs because when she moved again it kicked out. Then she moved the device again and there was another little peanut beside the first one.
I frowned at the picture and Logan took a step back. I looked at his face and he had gone pale.
Dr. Meyers laughed. “Sit down Dr. Matthews. I don’t deal with passed out husbands or boyfriends.”
Logan started taking deep breaths but I wasn’t sure why.
“Logan?”
He sat down in a chair against the wall but continued to stare at the screen.
“What’s happening?” I asked Dr. Meyers.
“You have twins Kate. Two healthy and very active twins from the looks of it. Unless there’s another one hiding in there, but I think it’s just twins.”
“Just?” Logan groaned.
I blinked at the monitor and watched as the two babies on the screen moved around separately. I thought it had been a glitch when I had first looked at it, but it clearly wasn’t.
I looked back at Logan, who had finally started breathing normally again. His eyes stared steadily at the monitor and he finally grinned. It was a relief to see that look on his face at last. I was worried he was rethinking this entire thing for a moment.
He might still rethink it after the initial euphoria of seeing his twin babies wore off. For now, I watched his face as he saw his children for the first time and I was glad to see the happiness in his eyes.
He stood back up when Dr. Myers started printing something off and came back over to me. His eyes swept down to mine and a look of unfiltered tenderness passed across his face.
Dr. Meyers cleared her throat and handed Logan a picture.
“I’ll call in some folic acid pills for the pharmacy downstairs and we’ll make you another appointment. You’ll need to pick those pills up today. If you need anything, you can always call, but Dr. Fuller is a fairly good resource for minor questions or complaints as well.”
I nodded and she left the room. Logan continued to stare down at me. Then his eyes moved to the picture.
I sat up with some unnecessary help from Logan and started rubbing some of the
goop off my belly. I hopped down and went behind the dressing screen. Looking back around it for a second, Logan hadn’t moved from where he was and was still looking at the picture.
He hadn’t said anything yet which was starting to worry me a bit.
I came out and found him taking a picture of the picture. He tapped some buttons on the screen, then he folded it and put it in his wallet.
He looked up at me again and motioned for me to come to him as he backed up to the chair and sat down.
I walked over to him and he tugged me into his lap. His face went into my neck and he inhaled deeply.
“Logan? Are you okay?”
He nodded against me. “Yes, sweetheart I’m more than okay.”
My hands drifted into his hair and massaged him. “Then what’s wrong?”
He shook his head, then leaned back to look at me. “Everything and nothing. I can’t believe I was such an idiot.”
I frowned at him and my stomach clenched nervously. “For what? Getting me pregnant?”
He laughed and his hand came to my face. “Fuck no, woman. For not getting you pregnant sooner. I could have totally fucked this up. I just can’t believe my incredible luck right now. I mean I’m shocked but who the hell wouldn’t be? But then I’m ecstatic. Fuck. Twins. You’re never lifting another thing until they’re born and you’re going to start eating like I do. Lots of eggs, protein, salad and no caffeine—”
“Logan—”
“Water, lots of water. Jesus, we need to think about an addition to the cabin. Maybe we can add another room to the bottom floor. I’ll talk to Aiden and see if I can get with his architect. I just sent him the picture. He’ll understand what I’m thinking. My parents are going to go crazy. I’ll sell the house as soon as possible—”
“Logan—”
He looked up at me, his eyes slightly glazed from his rambling. “What?”
I kissed him on his bottom lip. “You’re thinking too hard. Let’s work out the details later.”
He nodded and bit at my lip. “Is it bad that I want to fuck you silly right now?”
I shrugged. “Let’s go over to the hospital and get your thing done so we can go home and do that sooner rather than later.”
He scooted me off his lap and took my hand as he exited the offices. He picked up my appointment card, drug me down to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription, then walked at a fast pace across the sidewalk separating the hospital and the medical offices.
I smirked and tried to keep up. He was a man on a mission to get me home. But first things first. Mick, his partner and the medical examiner.
We met them in the basement of the hospital. Which was creepy but at least we were meeting in a conference room instead of over a dead body.
Logan sat me down on one end of the table away from the other men. Mick gave me a smile, his partner looked at me warily. He was probably wondering what I was doing here.
Logan brought me a bottled water, a protein bar, some crackers and some chips. If he thought I was going to eat all of it during the meeting he was mistaken. I wasn’t even that hungry.
They started discussing some items and I played with my phone. I really didn’t want to know what was going on by the sounds of it.
Logan looked through reports and pictures for a long time while they discussed the case.
Mick’s voice finally penetrated my focus on my online trivia game.
“Logan, what do you think? I’ve never seen a body that chewed up.”
“Lacerations everywhere. I have to agree with the ME’s report that it was blunt force, likely to the head. The lacerations occurred prior to the death blow.”
The medical examiner sitting beside Logan grumbled, “Agreed. She was bleeding quite a bit before death. Did you notice the stomach and the blood report?”
Logan nodded. “Yeah, I’m seeing it.”
Mick interrupted, “What’s wrong?”
Logan let out a long breath. “You said this case was ongoing? How many other bodies?”
“Three over the course of the last two months. Moving across state lines.”
Logan nodded and clenched his jaw. “Were all of them pregnant?”
Mick’s partner looked at him. “Yes, but that’s something we wanted the two of you to confirm before we gave you the analysis sheet.”
Logan gestured for the paperwork and it was handed over. His face looked intent when he read it. He pursed his lips and flipped through the pages.
When he was done he set it down on the table and linked his fingers in front of him.
“Yeah, I think I’m in agreement with all of that. Obviously, Dr. Charles and I are seeing the same things. I’m sure you have plenty of people crunching the data but I do have something to add.”
Mick smiled. “Anything would be helpful.”
Logan hesitated. “Well the information is from Brock. I wasn’t really paying attention to it when I talked to him this morning but it seems very relevant now.”
Mick’s partner grimaced and sat back.
“Who gave the information to Brock?” Mick asked.
Logan shrugged and turned the screen of his phone toward both of them.
Mick nodded. “Yeah that’s about right. Thank God, it’s just data and not something illegally obtained. I hate paperwork.”
Logan looked down the table at me for the first time since sitting down then turned back to the agents.
“If he’s dumping then grabbing then moving, then dumping and grabbing again we’re about to have a problem in Hope. That town isn’t big enough to have too many choices. Unless there’s a rash of pregnancies that I’m unaware of.”
I put my phone on the table and cleared my throat. Four sets of eyes swung to me.
“If I may. I work for Dr. Fuller and we generally see the majority of people in town before they get referred to a place like this. There are five pregnant women that I know of. Including me.”
Logan’s jaw clenched.
Mick nodded and looked across to Logan’s face. “Congratulations my friend. This probably wasn’t something you should have consulted on. I apologize. You know what I would suggest.”
Logan nodded. “Gentlemen, if you would be kind enough to pass that non-disclosure agreement over to me, I’d like to take Kaitlyn home. If you feel like she needs to sign one as well, we can make that happen.”
Mick waived the second suggestions off and slid the piece of paper in front of him to Logan.
He signed it quickly, stood up and shook hands with everyone in the room.
I barely got the chance to say good-bye before Logan grabbed my hand and drug me out of the hospital.
When we were back at the Jeep, he sat for a long time staring through the front window.
“I love you Kaitlyn. If anything ever happened to you I would lose my mind.”
I reached over and squeezed his leg. “I love you too. Everything will be okay.”
“One way or another,” he mumbled, as he started the Jeep and slowly drove us home.
Chapter Nineteen
He said he loved me.
This was significant and now frustrating. On the one hand, I was thrilled to hear it. On the other hand, he was now trying to drive me insane.
Our trip back was slow going. There had been a significant amount of snow still on the road when we had left but the plows had been out clearing it off and it wasn’t as bad as it had been. Logan refused to go faster than necessary, while other motorists, including a VW Bug, passed us while honking. He kept claiming that he had “precious cargo” on board and he wasn’t going to “endanger” us.
I reminded him that slow motorists could be as equally dangerous as ones who went the speed limit. Not that he listened at all.
The other thrilling but not so thrilling thing was that he was now in baby-crazy-man mode. Which meant that I was now being offered food every thirty minutes. As if I would starve and die if I didn’t eat constantly.
Why I needed to “eat for th
ree” as he put it, was beyond me.
I told him that many websites suggested increasing vitamins and eating when you were hungry rather than getting into that mindset. He reminded me that the internet was notoriously unreliable when it came to giving out medical information and that he was the doctor.
That had me mad and I gave him the silent treatment most of the way home.
When he offered me yet another granola bar halfway home, I unwrapped it, rolled down the window, and threw it out into the wilderness. I felt semi-guilty about it since I knew it was bad for animals to eat human food, but I figured one granola bar wasn’t going to cause the catastrophic annihilation of an entire species if it was eaten.
When he offered me another one five minutes later, I threatened to make him unable to have children for the rest of his life. In the middle of the night. With a sledgehammer.
He did however, concede to letting my drop by a whole foods store on the way home. He followed me around the store arching his eyebrow, checking labels, and arguing about my choices.
Ginger root, he argued, was a less than a proven medical method for getting morning sickness under control. I put it in the basket anyway. Peppermint leaves, chamomile tea, and coconut yogurt were grumbled at. Shatavari pills were laughed at and quinoa was marginally acceptable. He kept throwing in eggs, lots of eggs and red meat. I took them out of the basket and opted for organic as a compromise. Next came the fish versus chia seeds argument that neither of us won and both went into the basket.
I did pick up natural granola bars that I waved in his face and pointed out the sugar content in comparison to what he had offered earlier. He agreed I might be right.
By the time we got home it had been an exhausting day. Sex was the last thing on my mind when I crawled onto my bed and took a well-deserved nap.
When I woke up I heard Logan on the phone again and tapping away at his computer. It was mid-afternoon and I had to admit I was now hungry since I staged my hunger strike at lunchtime. I wandered into the kitchen and got out my yogurt and made a sandwich. He would probably argue with me about the content of lunch meat but I didn’t care.
