“I love you, too, Mr. Lake,” I replied. “You’re my world.”
After that, we settled into everyday married life, but instead of being boring and dreary, it’s exciting and fun every single day. Being Mrs. Lake has been one hell of a journey, and I can’t wait to do it forever.
Axel kept his promise about every day being just like our wedding night—our sex life has been experimental and exhilarating to say the least—until I became far too pregnant to enjoy it.
We’ll get back there though, if we can survive the sleepless nights. Axel is probably so desperate for it that he’ll be pouncing on me the second I get home from the hospital.
“I’m off to work, baby girl.” Axel snuggles into my neck, hugging me from behind as I hand him his packed lunch over my shoulder. “Don’t you dare go into labor today; I don’t want to miss another birth!”
He often makes these jokes, but I think it’s just to hide the hurt that he feels inside. The circumstances back then couldn’t be helped, but it caused him to miss so much with Ellie Rose….although he’s more than making up for it now. Sometimes on weekends, I don’t see the pair of them all day. They are just obsessed with one another.
“I can’t make any promises,” I say, turning around and smiling at him. “Grady and Brandon might want to join us this afternoon for tea!”
“We are not calling them that. I’m naming them, I’ve already told you.”
“Yeah, but you want to call them Jack and Ben. I want more exciting names for our baby boys.”
We both laugh this off, only teasing each other. We’ve decided not to name the boys until they’re actually here, which is what I did with Ellie Rose. She just looked like her name, so I knew it was perfect.
To be honest, when it comes to the twins, I’ll probably end up letting Axel have his way with their names. It’s only fair, seeing as I named our firstborn. Plus, then I can remind him of the huge sacrifice I’ve made when he’s woken up twenty times a night and has to help me change a hundred diapers a day.
He might know how to parent Ellie Rose, but babies are something else! I can’t wait to see how he copes.
“Bridge will be here anyway, if anything does happen.”
I try to reassure him, but it doesn’t seem to work, and his face still remains panicked.
“I’ll have my phone on me all day. Call me if you even get a twinge. Lucas knows that I’ll need to leave right away. He’s totally cool about that.”
Lucas and Axel work together now. They’ve opened a gym where they’re training daily. Lucas looks ridiculous in a suit, his bulky muscles threatening to rip the fabric apart. And Axel, my everything, makes sure everything runs smoothly. They turned a profit in their first month. They’re opening a new branch in an upscale part of town soon.
When I remember that wanted man who approached me in a bar when I was at my lowest point, it feels like a lifetime ago, as if it happened to two different people. But that’s what brought my life together. That’s what made everything complete.
That strange, odd event changed the course of my life forever.
“I love you,” I say, wrapping my arms around Axel neck and gazing deep into his eyes.
“I love you, too, dirty girl,” he replies. He leans forward, kissing me gently. “Always have, always will.”
