How have I done this? How could I be so strong? And she ran into each room making mental notes of what she would put where. She was laughing, she couldn’t stop.
Upstairs, the bed was made and the sheets turned back. Bailey had left his green silk dressing gown for her, lying on the bed like a shadow.
She ran a deep bath and cleaned herself of the Somerset mud. The sand in her hair and the grit under her nails. She had never felt so clean. Inside and outside she was so clean.
In the bedroom she combed out the tangles in her hair. It took some time. She could see herself in the full-length mirror, her wet hair dripping over her shoulders and Bailey’s dressing gown nearly down to the floor. She was a bright green shoot slicing up from the ground.
Oh Axe, I have everything I want except you. On a cliff is a bonfire you must build at midnight. The highest you have ever made. Burning so bright like I am now. When it dies I will still be shining.
Here I am.
