Life itself.
And love.
And with them, I shall want for nothing.
Between servings during the prolonged feast, the class of our local children collects in front of Rebecca and Beau to sing the entirety of the Amish Wedding Song, a traditional favorite on these occasions. A few months back, Lilly had encouraged these same children to sing a verse from the tune as a way of apologizing to Rebecca for causing her to break down in class the week before. But Lilly had knowingly and unwisely chosen a verse from this song because of its ramifications.
Rebecca was upset with me because she wasn’t the first to get married, and so this song, even though the lyrics had been perfectly harmless, was seen by my daed as further insult. To sing lines from the Amish Wedding Song to a young woman who was sad because she wasn’t getting married? I still chuckle to think of him running suddenly out of the front door, hollering his anger and waving an axe handle, the kids screaming in terror and scattering without understanding why they were being attacked.
They sing, “Praised by God in the highest throne / Who has chosen us / Has put a beautiful garment on us / That we would be newborn.”
As they warble through the tune now, I have to wonder if they ever fully realized the miscommunication. The way they look at Daed now, eyes wide, lips trembling, nervousness draining the blood from their faces and the fullness from their voices, I feel like they’re still afraid of him, and what he might do without any clear reason.
“With which God adorns his people / The wedding of the Lamb is already prepared...”
Daed seems to realize it as well. Between that day and this, I have no way of knowing whether Daed investigated the strange occurrence at our family farm. But I can see by his mischievous smile as he watches the kids sing that he knows they’re afraid of him. I even see him snarl at one kid (playfully as far as I am concerned) and the kid almost bolts and runs away from the choir!
“For the pious to lead the way to / Rejoice, all love Christians / That God has received you.”
Aside from our little, private amusement, the Wedding Song really does come off as a lovely tribute and a touching salute. And it means even more than that. It means that the community has finally accepted Rebecca into its bosom. I know it will cradle her there for the rest of her life, and I can share in my parents’ gladness that her future is secure.
It’s all they ever wanted, and I love them for that.
