The Watcher opens his eyes. The water is silent today. As he pulls himself up to make his way back down the hill, he stops short. Straining to hear one soft voice from deep in the lake's belly.
Thank you. I am home.
The Watcher smiles. He will come back tomorrow. There will always be a spirit who calls to him. And he will always be there to hear them. For he is the Watcher of the Lake and it is his legacy.
It is done.

This story came to me in the form of a dream.
When I woke up the next morning, I googled Native water-healing songs and found "Crystal Clear" as heard on the Medicine Song CD released in 2009 by Brenda MacIntyre, Medicine Song Woman. When I listened to her singing and drumming and understood the words, I knew I had to make my main character—the Watcher of the Lake—a reality.
