“Aye, very happy.”
The crowd in the great hall who had come to celebrate their wedding pounded their cups onto the tables in a rhythmic beat.
Rylan grinned and rose, pulling up Kayte as well. “Duty calls, my lady.”
She laughed, happy to comply with the guests’ demands. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Whistles and calls rang through the air, making them both laugh.
Kayte took her seat, sharing a smile with Rylan’s mother, Lady Elizabeth, whose large, brown eyes were much like Rylan’s. She’d been so kind to Kayte as had Rylan’s entire family. It had taken only a day or two until Kayte had realized that Lord Nicholas and Rylan’s brother and sister had second sight. Now she understood some of Rylan’s remarks. No wonder he felt so different from them.
Anne had been very pleased they weren’t proceeding to the convent. Rylan had a small holding not far from Staverton where she and Anne would remain until he returned from Scotland. Though the idea of being apart for such a long time made her heart ache, she wouldn’t trade this day for anything. Spending the rest of her life with Rylan was a gift beyond measure, and she would gladly wait for him.
He leaned close. “Have I mentioned how much I love you?”
Awareness poured through her as she thought of the night to come. “Indeed you have. Surely you know I love you as well.”
“I do, but I will never grow weary of hearing it.”
That evening after the festivities had ended, Kayte waited for Rylan’s arrival in their chamber in her thin shift, her heart beating quickly both from nerves and anticipation. The fire cast a golden light around the chamber. She glanced at the bed, which was draped in red velvet. Already the bedding was pulled aside, waiting for them, but she couldn’t bring herself to climb into it until Rylan arrived. She spun the wedding ring on her finger, hardly able to believe her luck. She was married to a man she loved, and they had their entire lives ahead of them. That was such a gift.
The door opened to reveal Rylan. He smiled as he caught sight of her standing before the fire. “Greetings, wife.”
“And to you, husband.” Despite her nerves, she crooked her finger for him to come closer.
His smile grew broader as he latched the door behind him. In moments, he’d gathered her into his arms and simply held her tight. The sweetness of his embrace made her smile. At last he leaned back and drew a finger along her cheek. “You are so very beautiful.”
His hand found the ribbon that bound her loose braid and released it, using his fingers to spread her tresses along her back. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time.”
She lifted the bottom of his tunic and lifted it, assisting him as he removed the soft linen. The glow from the fire highlighted his contoured upper body and the flat planes of his stomach. She ran her fingers along his body, amazed again at his strength. A thin bandage still protected his injury. “Your side is healing nicely.”
“Thanks to you.”
He removed his boots but left on his chausses then took her face between his hands to kiss her, his tongue seeking hers.
The desire that had simmered inside her all day spilt over. She rose up on her toes and wrapped her arms around his neck, loving the feel of his hard length against her with so little between them.
His hands lowered to linger at the side of her breasts then lower still to her waist then down to squeeze her hips. He cupped her buttocks and drew her even closer, the hardness of his manhood making her gasp.
His kisses grew hotter as he moved to her cheek and continued down her neck to pause at the ribbon that bound the neck of her shift. His heated gaze met hers. “May I?”
She caught his hand to stop him as worry coursed through her. “I don’t know if you will—”
“Kayte, you are a delight, inside and out. I can hardly wait to see how truly beautiful you are. I want you so much.”
With a smile, she nodded, unwilling to allow anything to stand between them.
He tugged at the ribbon and her shift loosened to reveal her shoulders and the hint of her breasts. His gaze was riveted to her body, causing heat to spear through her. With one finger, he pulled the shift lower, revealing her breasts. Though she’d thought she’d be embarrassed, the appreciation on his face removed that. Then his finger moved again and her shift hung for a moment on the curve of her hips before falling to a puddle on the floor.
“Kayte.” The reverence in his voice matched his expression as he reached out to touch the curve of her breast then her nipple. He traced the indent of her waist and the flare of her hip before gathering her into his arms once again.
His lips found hers as his hands continued to roam. The heat of his skin against hers left her wanting more. Desire pooled low in her belly. He kissed her neck, lowering to her breast where he took her nipple in his mouth. A gasp left her lips as heat shot down through her center. Then his hands were on her bottom, drawing her closer.
She touched him as well, lowering her hands to the top of his chausses, displeased that they blocked her path. She pressed her hand against the hardness of his manhood, causing him to moan low in his throat.
He quickly shed the rest of his garments and lifted her into his arms. “I’m so pleased you’re my wife.”
“Good, because you’re stuck with me for a very long time.” She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck.
He carried her to the bed and placed her gently down then lay down beside her to kiss her until her head spun. His hands traced the curves of her body until she squirmed. “Please, Rylan.”
“Aye,” he whispered, nuzzling her neck as he touched her hip, her thigh, then finally her very center.
Her hips bucked as he slipped a finger inside her. “Oh!”
“So sweet.”
He continued touching her until she thought she might shatter. Passion clouded her thoughts and she only knew she wanted more, anything to quench the burning need inside her. “Rylan?”
He shifted on top of her, easing open her legs until his hips rested on hers. The feel of him on top of her was glorious. She shifted beneath him and the tip of his manhood pressed against her center.
As he entered her, she gasped in surprise.
“Kayte?” He stopped immediately. “I thought you— Didn’t you and your husband—”
“He was never able to…perform…so we didn’t.” She gave up trying to explain why she’d been so embarrassed.
“The man was an ass. I’m sorry. If I would’ve known, I would’ve taken more time to better prepare you.”
“Nay. ’Tis perfect. You’re perfect.” Kayte squeezed her eyes shut, hoping he wouldn’t stop.
He kissed her again, and she stopped thinking. His hands seemed to be everywhere at once, finding places on her body she hadn’t known were so sensitive.
She whimpered as desire poured through her. At last he eased forward until he filled every part of her.
“Are you well?” he asked, breathless.
She didn’t bother to answer but lifted her hips in response.
With a groan he pulled back then moved forward again. A glorious sensation spread through her, down to her toes. He moved back and forth, his body bringing her pleasure she hadn’t believed possible. Then he reached down to touch her center again and her world shattered, sending her flying to the heavens.
His pace grew faster until he shuddered above her. “Kayte!” His cry of her name sent a wave of love crashing through her.
At last he lifted onto his elbows to look into her eyes. “You are a treasure. I’m a very lucky man.”
She smiled. “Not nearly as lucky as me. You not only gave me a Christmas to remember, you gave me love.”
“Always and forever?”
“Aye. Always and forever, and for many more Christmases to come.”
