The Bone Sparrow Page 17

by Zana Fraillon

Thank you first and foremost to all those who have shared the most difficult moments of their lives so that we may better understand. Without your courage and honesty, this book could never have been written. Thank you also to everyone who has ever had to make their journey to peace. With you, we are a stronger, more beautiful, wiser, and a more just society. Thank you for your bravery.

Many thanks also go to my agent, the truly magnificent Claire Wilson, with the perfect answer to any and every question. You are incredible.

And, of course, thank you to Helen Thomas, Suzanne O’Sullivan, Hannah Allaman, and Emily Meehan for all your combined insights and thoughts along the way. This is an infinitely stronger book because of you. Thanks also to everyone else at Hachette, Orion, and Hyperion who has made this book what it is—I couldn’t have done it without you.

Thanks also to Rosalind Price for gifting me your time at early stages in the manuscript, and setting me on the right track—without your advice this book would never have made it further than the scrap-paper drawer.

And thank you to Chris, whose place on the dedication list should have come years ago. In spite of the distance separating us, you have always been there for me and supported me without question. Our couch awaits, always.

Last, but never least, all my love and thanks go to my wonderful family—Mani, Mischa, Luca, and Jugs. You are all my dreams and wishes come true.

ZANA FRAILLON was born in Melbourne, Australia, but spent her early childhood in San Francisco. Zana has written two picture books for young children, a series for middle-grade readers, and a novel for older readers based on research and recounts of survivors of the Forgotten Generation. She now lives in Melbourne with her three sons, her husband, and two dogs. When Zana isn’t reading or writing, she likes to explore the museums and hidden passageways scattered across Melbourne. They provide the same excitement as that moment before opening a new book—preparing to step into the unknown where a whole world of possibilities awaits.
