“Well, there's that...”she said, with a faraway look in her eyes. “Do you think we'll ever get to go back home?”
He shrugged. “That depends. If the good guys get control of the military again, then maybe. If not, we can travel the world and stop where we like. That's not so bad is it?”
“No,” she shook her head, biting her lip. “But it might be a bit more complicated with...” She was having a hard time saying the words.
“With what?” he looked at her, puzzled.
“With a baby. Dan, I'm pregnant,” she breathed out, relieved to finally get the news out she had been keeping to herself.
“You are? Are you sure?” his eyes went wide.
“Yeah. I didn't want to say anything before, plus I wasn't sure.”
“Well, that's great, honey! We were thinking of having a family anyway!” He pulled her up and kissed her on the lips deeply.
“It is exciting. And I'm happy. But it is going to be tough now that we're on the run, and...”
“And, what?” he ruffled his forehead up, thinking he had heard all the surprises he could take for one day. “We'll make it work. No worries there, babe. I give you my word.”
She put her hand on his chest and smiled. “I've got no doubt about you. I know we'll manage. It's just that...what if our child has a tentacle, too?”
The thought sent a wave of fear through Dan. “I-I didn't think of that. My God, honey.” He held her tight. “Does it? Do you know?”
She shook her head, “I haven't had them check, yet. I don't know if I want to...or if I could.” She was on the verge of tears.
He held her tighter. “OK, don't worry about it for now. I'll get in touch with some people to help us; some scientists and doctors. We'll get to the bottom of this. Maybe even find a way to reverse my tentacle. Alright?”
She nodded but he could see the tears falling down her cheeks. She wiped them away. “Whatever happens, I'm glad to be with you. I know our child will be just as good of a person as you are, no matter what.” She kissed him.
He stared at the ceiling. “I hope so, honey. This would be a good time to pray, too.” He closed his eyes and said a prayer. So did she.
Dan had imagined that the hard work was behind him but in many ways it was just beginning.
