  “Of beatin’ you.”

  She took off like a shot, without any warning, and got several yards away before Cutler even began to chase her. “Hey!” he yelled. “Don’t make it so tough!”

  He heard her laughing. Good. That would slow her down a little bit. He took off after her, and the distance between them narrowed as her laughter got the better of her. Soon, Cutler was close enough, and he dove for her legs. The two of them went down, and they rolled over each other in the dust. He held her down.

  “My hero!” she said and continued to laugh.

  “Not yet,” he said.

  He picked her up in his arms and carried her toward the wagon. Halfway there she put her arms around his neck. And she stopped laughing.
