Tyronious chased after Demetry, his shoulders sagging a little, his face seeming less fierce, less proud, subservient even. “Come, let me introduce you to my people. You are Jeremiah’s successor, and are thus worthy of a grand title. What shall my people call you — lord, master, warlock?”
Warden Cendrik was right, Demetry was reborn, just not in the fashion the seer had intended. Demetry swore allegiance to no one. Served no one. Prayed to no one. He was his own man. His destiny was his, and only his to control. Demetry shrugged off the weight of his old life and embraced the uncertain future that lay ahead.
He walked past the dragoons, forcing Tyronious and his warriors to follow in his wake. “A man’s title only has value if it can provoke a worthwhile reaction from his friends and foes,” said Demetry, his voice mimicking the fine intonation that Jeremiah so often used while giving a lecture. “For now, I will need to be feared. Our foes must dread my wrath, so that compliance will seem a better option than resistance.”
Demetry turned to face his entourage of eagerly awaiting dragoons. “Your people shall call me the Necromancer,” announced Demetry. The god-fearing men of this world deemed necromancy an unforgivable sin. He would wear it as a badge.
“A suitable title,” said Tyronious, nodding with satisfaction. “It will set fear in the hearts of your foes.”
“Indeed it will,” added Joshua. “But such a title must be temporary. One day, when the Orb of Azure is in your possession, you will need a more friendly title. King, perhaps. Or maybe emperor.”
“How about god?” whispered Demetry in reply. For once the voices in his head did not sound any objection. Instead, they gave him a hearty round of applause.
