Titan bent to her breast, licking the liquid that had beaded on the soft flesh. He sprinkled open-mouthed sucking kisses all over the upper swell. When she arched her back, he rewarded her, cupping one tit as he devoured the other, sucking voraciously on her nipple. She writhed as he nursed, his fingers milking the distended tip.
Makenna moaned, cradling his head. “I love this, it feels so good,” she keened.
Titan didn’t let up, he massaged and sucked until she was writhing, biting his way across her cleavage until he could minister to her other breast. Sliding his lips over the smooth skin, he licked a path down her torso, cleaning up the rivulets of champagne. When he came to her mound, he took another piece of peach and teased her slit. He smiled as she tossed her head. “How does that feel? Cool?”
She choked out a little laugh. “Yea, but it makes me so hot.” She couldn’t take her eyes off of him. He was watching her so intently, passing the juicy piece of fruit over her clit. And when he brought it to his lips and ate it, she shivered.
“You taste so good.”
Makenna spread her legs wider, inviting him back. Titan knew what she needed. He moved to the end of the table and grabbed her hips, bringing her to the edge. “Now for a drink with my meal.” Taking the champagne, he poured a thin stream, letting the golden drops cover her mound and run down between her legs to pool on the table. “Beautiful.” Going to his knees, he swiped his tongue up her slit, through the wet folds until he came to her clit. A perfect little pearl. “I want you so much,” he spoke against her skin, making her jerk. Titan smiled, then sucked the little button into his mouth.
Makenna responded with a moan and a gasp, reaching out to grab the sides of the table. “Titan, fuck!”
Titan chuckled, running the flat of his tongue over her clit again and again. When her whole body jerked, he had to hold her down, anchoring her hips to the table. “Fly for me, Makenna.” He scraped his teeth over her clit. “You once told me you were ready to fly. Do it for me.” Again, he drew the small bud between his lips and sucked.
Makenna screamed as she came and it was the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard. He’d given her that pleasure and the knowledge filled him with primal satisfaction. Giving her no chance to recover, he stood, sheathed himself with a waiting condom and funneled his aching cock into her still trembling passage. “This is what I needed,” he spoke through clenched teeth.
“Me too,” she whispered, wrapping her legs around his hips.
Titan slid his hands up her belly until he could cup both breasts. As he fucked her, pumping in and out, he milked her nipples. “I love to be inside you. It’s my favorite place in the whole world.”
She stared up at him, her Titan, while his big body moved over hers, in hers. The feeling of belonging to him was so sweet Makenna thought she might cry. “Show me what you got, cowboy,” she whispered up to him. “Make me burn.”
Accepting her challenge, he filled her over and over again with deep, hard strokes. He was past talking, he couldn’t get enough. Thrusting, pumping, in and out, harder, faster. Sex with Makenna wasn’t just sex—it was making love, pure and simple. And when she tightened around him, making those sexy little noises he loved, Titan couldn’t hold back. He leaned over, sucked her nipple in his mouth and pumped one more sweet slide, emptying himself in electric pulses of release.
Makenna held him tight. “I don’t think this table will ever be the same.”
Titan laughed, kissing her gently on the lips. “I’ll never be the same. You’ve changed my life, Makenna. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world.”
CHAPTER TWELVE
Makenna was beginning to learn that mornings were full of adventure when she was a part of Titan’s life. She was having the best dream, the most erotic dream she’d ever had. With his head at her breast, he was suckling at her nipple while he pulled at its twin with eager fingers. She tossed her head, moaning. “Feels so good.”
“Are you wet, baby?”
His voice made her open her eyes. This was no dream. Her hips levitated off the bed when he touched her between them. Yes, she was wet—she was dripping.
“I’ve got to have you, I can’t wait.”
He slipped on a condom and came over her, lifted her thighs and sank in. It felt so amazing, she was so turned-on by the attention he’d been lavishing on her breasts that she started cumming…and cumming. “Titan!” she screamed as he fucked her.
When he shuddered above her, Makenna clamped down hard on him, making him groan. When he rolled over, he carried her with him. She stretched and smiled. “What a way to wake up. I loved it.”
Sealing their union with a kiss, he announced, rising, “Good. I plan on waking up like that with you for at least the next fifty years.” His parting words as he padded naked from the room left her lying there with her mouth wide open. She only shut it when his cell began to ring. “Will you get that, love?”
“Sure.” She rolled over and took it from the bedside table. “Titan’s phone.” Makenna listened, said goodbye and pressed the OFF button. “There’s a town hall meeting back home. You’ve been called before the council.”
They readied themselves, said goodbye to his parents and hit the road. The drive was scenic, traveling through the rocky hill country, but neither saw much being deep in thought.
“What do you think this is about?” she asked. The clerk’s voice hadn’t given anything away.
“I don’t know,” Titan said. “This is my first experience with a town meeting. As secretary, you know we turn all reports in to the county, but they’ve never really interfered before. Usually they’re just grateful we risk life and limb to protect them.”
“Maybe there’s some word on Damien.”
“Maybe. But I don’t think this would be the place for that to come to light.” He could hear the worry in her voice, so he sought to take her mind off the meeting. “The first chance we get, I want you to take that test. If I need to start renovating a room into a nursery, I want to get started.”
She smiled, picturing a baby boy with his topaz eyes and dark hair. “What would we name a boy?”
“Hmmm,” Titan mused, “I have a girl’s name in mind, but no boy’s name.”
“What is it?” She perked up, curious.
“Tessa, I want to name her after you.”
A big smile came over her face. “How about Tyson for a boy, it’s close to yours.”
“I like it.” He raised her hand to his for a kiss. “Let’s get this meeting behind us, then we’ll go home, take care of the animals and celebrate.”
She studied his face. “What if I’m not pregnant, what if there’s nothing to celebrate?”
“Ah, honey, we have each other, that’s plenty to celebrate.”
When they drove up to the town hall, Titan parked. He noticed there were cars in every available spot. Something about this didn’t seem right. As they started in the door, Hotshot met them. “Wait, before you go in there, you need to know that it’s Damien’s friends, they’re the ones who’ve stirred this up.”
“Damn.” Titan wondered if Makenna should even go in. “What do they want?”
“You removed as Fire Chief for one thing.” His friend looked as if he hated to say the words.
“Well, I can certainly arrange that,” Titan said dryly.
“Don’t even think it,” Makenna said in his defense. “You’re a wonderful chief. They’re just blind to Damien’s faults.”
Hearing the shouts and loud voices coming from inside, Titan steeled himself and opened the door. He saw the city officials at the front, along with Kirk Armstrong and Deric Conner, the Fire Marshal and the Sheriff. They’d no more than walked three steps down the center aisle before a man spoke up from the rear. “Here he is now, and she’s with him! Our community shouldn’t have to put up with such salaciousness. Have they no shame? Living in sin while the man she’s married to, one of our own, is accused of acts he didn’t commit!”
Makenna f
elt like sinking into the floor. She recognized the man, he was pastor of a small church located just outside of town. “Titan…”
“It’s okay, baby.” He saw Allie seated about three rows back and he steered her toward her friend. “You sit with her. And don’t worry, I’ll deal with this.”
The Sheriff was at the podium, trying to maintain control. “We have evidence that links Damien Wade to these fires, Preacher.”
“How do we know Sloan or that woman didn’t plant the evidence?” another person shouted from the right.
Deric Conner dry-scrubbed his face. “We’re in the process of gathering more forensic evidence, but I’m not at liberty to share official police business with everyone while an investigation is ongoing.”
A general uproar broke out. The mayor rose and held up his hands for quiet. “Let’s hear from Titan Sloan. You’ve been making accusations and he should be able to tell his side.”
Titan didn’t know he had a side, other than what was right and legal. Nevertheless, he came to the podium. “You’ll never know how much I regret all of this. Especially the pain and suffering Captain Wade’s wife endured at his hands.”
A woman came to her feet about three rows over from Makenna. She recognized her as the woman from the hardware store. “How do we know she’s telling the truth? She might have just taken a little spill and blamed the bruises on Damien. He’s a good man.”
“No, ma’am,” the Sheriff interjected, “we have proof Mr. Wade committed assault and battery against his wife. That isn’t up for debate.”
Whispers could be heard all over the room.
An older gentleman wearing overalls with a large chew of tobacco in his jaw spoke up. “I heard tell she’s touched in the head! Hasn’t she been in some type of a looney bin?”
“All right, that’s enough.” Titan had stood it all he could. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Makenna. She underwent counseling for trauma, she was a survivor of the Oklahoma City Bombing. When the building exploded, Makenna was in the daycare. She was only six years old. Her mother was killed.” At the startled expressions on people’s face, he added, “Yea, Wade neglected to tell you that part, didn’t he?”
Makenna couldn’t stand it, she had to get out. Allie tried to stop her, but she ran.
Titan saw her leave and rose to follow her. He ignored the curious looks from the townspeople. Right now he wouldn’t give a plug nickel for the whole bunch. “Makenna!” He found her standing out by his truck.
She was crying. “I’m so sorry. This is embarrassing. Everyone is turning on you because of me.”
He took her in his arms. “Do you think I care?”
“It’s not fair!” She sobbed against his shirt. “They hate me.”
He wiped her tears. “Does it matter what they think? I love you.”
She threw herself against him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “I love you too. And no, as long as you love me, I don’t care if they jump in the lake.”
“Titan, they need you back in here,” Kirk spoke from the door.
“Go on in,” she told him. “I’ll get my breath and go back to sit with Allie in a second.”
Titan didn’t want to leave her. “Okay, this will be over soon.”
He followed the Fire Marshal back in. But instead of going to the front, Kirk pulled him off to the side. “Let me tell you what we found. It might help your feelings some.”
Titan needed something to make him feel better. He was worried to death about Makenna. “What’s that?”
“We found more evidence against Wade. The day of the Langston Fire, he had a flat on his pick-up. He took it to Moore’s garage and they replaced it. Moore showed me the receipt. We found the tire in his garage, it had white shell in the treads. And the only place there’s white shell in town is the Langston place.”
Titan hated to play devil’s advocate, but he had to say it. “Kirk, Makenna and Allie are best friends. Couldn’t he have driven her over there to visit some time before the fire?”
“We thought of that, but Allie told us that the gravel had been delivered and spread that morning.” Kirk looked proud of himself. “She had a receipt too.”
Titan hid a grin. Kirk put a lot of stock in receipts. “I’m glad. I didn’t like to be lumped in the same pile with Wade, just because I spotted a fire and stopped to help.”
“Oh, and one more thing.” Kirk bent even closer, whispering, “We heard from Damien’s old boss. They suspected him up there of starting fires, but they were never able to get any proof. After I told them about the liquid paraffin, that may change.”
“Hell, he’s a career arsonist, isn’t he?”
“Looks that way.”
Shaking their heads, they returned to the podium to answer more questions and concerns.
Outside, Makenna was steeling herself to go back in when she heard a voice. “I can’t believe you have the nerve to show your face in public.
Makenna jumped, taken by surprise. What didn’t surprise her was the identity of her intruder. “Tammie Woods.”
“You threw away the love of one good man and now you’re trying to pull the wool over Titan’s eyes.”
“Damien is dangerous. He hurt me.” She backed away from Tammie, who had her fingers curled into claws.
“Damien is the same man he’s always been.” She took her finger and poked Makenna hard in the chest. “And you’re going to pay.”
“Are you threatening me?” she asked, glancing around to see if anyone else was outside.
“No, I’m telling you the truth. The day is coming when you’re going to regret you ever came to the Devil’s Backbone.”
She was wrong. Titan was here and she could never regret finding him. “We’ll see, I guess.”
“And another thing,” Tammie hissed. “Titan’s little goats are out and wandering near the highway. If they come on my property, we’ll be having BBQ.”
Makenna watched her leave, feeling sore from the encounter. She started to go back in, but the idea of Houdini and Cola on the highway and the possibility of them getting hit spurred her to action. She opened the door and tiptoed back into the meeting. The debate was still ongoing. Now they were questioning Kirkland about the nursing home fire.
“We found liquid paraffin at the scene. The arsonist squirted it through the mail drops in the front and through the kitchen vents in the back.”
“How do we know it wasn’t a copycat?” a man yelled.
Kirk Armstrong was getting frustrated. “Because there’s not that many lunatics around, that’s why!”
Makenna slipped up to sit by Allie. She could see Titan was deep in conversation with Hotshot. They were studying a piece of paper, pointing to something that drew their interest.
“Allie,” she whispered, “would you give me a ride to Titan’s? Some of his livestock is out and I need to get them back in before they get hit on the road.”
Allie picked up her purse. “I’ll give you my keys and you can take my car. I’ve got a date with Hotshot afterward and I don’t want to miss it.”
“Oh, okay,” Makenna took the keys, “thank you.” She briefly hugged her friend and crept back out, grateful to escape all of the accusations and yelling.
Once she was back at Skyview, Makenna parked and immediately ran out to look for the goats. “Houdini! Cola!” Seeing nothing, she headed out to the barn. The gate to their pen was standing open. She took the time to grab their leashes, then took off to look for them. By now it was early afternoon. Makenna didn’t have on her watch, but the sun wasn’t directly overhead anymore. Heading toward the highway, next to the fence line separating Tammie and Titan’s land, she heard a faint bleating. “Houdini! Cola!”
Breaking out into a run, she was thankful to see them grazing on some tall grass. “What are you two doing?”
She was thankful they didn’t run from her. In a few minutes she had the leashes hooked on their collars and was on the way back to the barn. As she walked, she relived
the harsh things people had said about her. They’d made her so uncomfortable. Just because Damien grew up here, some people couldn’t believe he could be at fault. But what had Titan said? What was more important? That they love her or that he loved her?
There was no contest.
One day the truth would be known. Until that time, she needed no one’s approval but his.
Once she had the goats put up, she decided to stop in at the house to wash the pungent smell off of her hands. Those two needed a bath! Inside, she headed to the bathroom, took one look in the mirror and decided to change clothes. With no time for a shower, she freshened up quickly, grabbing the first thing she could find to put on. The jeans she’d worn the day before going to Austin were still lying across the hamper. “These will do.”
Going back downstairs, she thought about the pregnancy test. Heartened by Titan’s attitude, she decided to see once and for all. Was she pregnant? With trembling hands, she went to her purse and withdrew the box. Returning to the restroom, she took the test, then she waited, staring at herself in the mirror. It was unbelievable how much her life had changed. Her marriage was over. Her husband was on the verge of capture and would face jail time. She had Titan in her life—and she might be pregnant!
Counting out the seconds, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. This was it! Raising the plastic stick to eye-level, she looked. There was a plus sign. A plus sign! She and Titan were having a baby!
With a happy squeal, she ran down the stairs to the kitchen. She couldn’t wait to tell him. Maybe she could get back to the meeting before it adjourned and leave Allie her car. Titan would be worried if she wasn’t there, but she couldn’t have let Houdini and Cola get run over! Picking up her purse, she was about to slip the pregnancy stick inside when a voice behind her caused her blood to run cold. She dropped it where it landed unnoticed on the floor.
