The large black bear fell to the ground and slowly transformed back into a man. The blood poured from his neck, and his face went pale.
“You…”
Norah shifted back, and so did Abram.
“They’ll be after us. God help us, they’ll never stop hunting us, Norah.”
“Then we’ll be ready for them. We won’t stop until we take down the leaders of the Iron Fur Clan,” she said. She reached over, tracing her hand back over his face. “We’ll have to leave Cole here. He’ll have to grow up without us. But he’ll be safe. We can come back from time to time and check in on him... see that he’s growing up happy.”
Abram stared at her. And then, quietly, he nodded.
They knew that they would have to continue fighting, perhaps for the rest of their lives. But they had found their freedom. And so long as they were together and they were free, it didn’t matter if they had nothing else.
It was enough.
