“It’s fitting in a way,” Xandra says. “After all he’s done, now he’s becoming what he hates most. It’s probably a more appropriate sentence than we could arrange for him.”

Dax sits back in his chair. “What does that mean for me?”

Rodriguez fixes him in his disarming amber gaze. “Hopefully your claim of self-defense will hold.”

“In the unlikely situation that a legal action is brought against you, we have a legal team that can assist you,” Xandra adds.

  “Vampire or human?”

She gives him the ghost of a smile. “Both. We all need to work together if this truce between vampires and humans is going to hold.”

  CHAPTER NINE

  SIX MONTHS LATER...

Dax is surprisingly nervous tonight. For months he’s been promising Myah a private performance. And tonight, with the theater finally between shows, he has his opportunity. It’s been a while since he’s sung for anyone but himself. He hadn’t uttered a note in front of anyone else since his disastrous date with Xandra. And lately, during the aftermath of the police investigation, he hasn’t even had the time to practice. But during the past few weeks things have calmed down. Jeremy is in custody. No charges have been brought against Dax. Xandra, Rodriguez and their team have done their best to round up the victims who were willing to come forward.

Still, despite Myah’s pleas, he’s put off this night. Everything between them is going so well, he’s afraid he’ll disappoint her in this one thing. He fears that the notes he hears so clearly in his own head will fall flat once they leave his lips. He’s always had this crippling fear. He can sing in the shower, in the car, anywhere but on the stage. It’s kept him working behind the scenes all these years. But Myah wants to hear him sing and he doesn’t want to disappoint her.

He takes his place on the stage. His audience of one is already in her seat, front and center, her expectant face raised toward him.

Dax takes a deep breath and the first notes ring clear and true. His voice fills the theater.

The next number is easier, the one after that easier still. Finally, the last of his notes die into silence. Myah jumps to her feet, clapping furiously. A standing ovation.

  Finally, Dax takes his bow.
