“Would I make a good mother?”

  ♡

His steps faltered, almost stepping on her toes, which would’ve hurt her like hell since she was wearing open-toed heels. Just as quickly, he corrected his stance and kept twirling her around the ballroom.

“Of course. You’re going to make a beautiful mother. Why would you ask such a silly question? You’re nothing like your mother.”

  “Do you want kids?”

  “As many as you want.”

  “Five.”

He almost tripped in his steps again, but stopped himself before he looked like a complete fool. She could still manage to surprise him with her words. He figured by now, although they hadn’t been married that long, she wouldn’t catch him off guard anymore. So untrue. She normally said something daily that had him pausing in whatever he was doing.

  “Five it is, then.”

“Seriously?” She laughed. “You’ll have five kids if that’s what I want?”

“Five, rambunctious, beautiful kids like you? Why wouldn’t I want that? It sounds perfect.”

She playfully slapped his shoulder. “You always say the right thing. Stop it.”

Her dress swirled and twirled as they danced the waltz. As much as Ben and Zeke griped about taking dance lessons, they were having a great time. Even Stitch looked like he was having a good time. He agreed right away when Dee mentioned asking him to take Susan. He still felt guilty and horrible that Susan overheard what Newman said. While he didn’t see Stitch too often, the guy was starting to grow on him. He was making Susan happy. That’s what mattered at the moment.

This night, with this woman, was one of the best nights he ever had. He never made it to prom, or any other dance function his high school had. Admitting that to Dee had been difficult. Once he did, he felt lighter. More free. She said right away, “This’ll be our night. The prom you never had.” And damn if it wasn’t. He loved every minute of the night so far. Even the strange talk about kids, something they never did before, even with using no condoms. The talk about having kids was just always ignored.

“Did I tell you I love you yet today?”

Smirking in that delicious way she smirked, she leaned closer, ruining her posture and planted a kiss on his lips. “Tell me again.”

Slowing down, he pressed her closer to him. “I love you.”

  “I’d like two kids.”

  “What happened to five?”

  “If you insist.”

Laughing, they started up again. Sauer didn’t miss the way Zeke and Ben kept glancing at them and grinning like idiots. He talked such big talk about how he was going to dominate them on the dance floor, and here he was, continually stopping and starting as if he didn’t know what he was doing. Kissing his wife superseded anything else.

“I’m not supposed to say anything.”

His brow rose. She never could keep anything to herself when it came to what others said. He knew with certainty she never divulged anything that was said between them. But everyone else was fair game. She always got this little delicious gleam in her eye. Excitement bubbling from her lips to share her juicy news. Hell, he’d come home sometimes, she’d be in his face to talk some cases with him, wanting to help him solve it. He hated that part. He didn’t want her involved in another case of his ever again.

At least her nightmares were getting better. Slowly, she was moving on from what that bastard did to her. Some days, he wanted to kill him all over again. Especially with all the evidence they uncovered in that rundown house. They found five bodies buried in the backyard, evidence in the house as well, where he most likely raped then killed the women. He hated thinking how they would’ve never caught him if he hadn’t killed his sister, then attacked Dee. His madness had started to unravel. Thank goodness for that because he couldn’t hurt another woman again. While they still didn’t know why his sister blackmailed him, they figured it had something to do with kidnapping, raping, and murdering five women. What else could’ve it been?

He needed to stop thinking about that bastard. Sometimes it was hard not to let it take over his thoughts, especially when he saw Dee struggle with what happened. She wasn’t struggling now. The delicious glimmer in her eyes to share her exciting news was turning him on. He loved seeing her excited about anything and everything.

“Do you wanna know what it is?” Her eyes sparkled brighter with mischief, the anticipation to tell him. He loved the moment right before she told him whatever it was she wanted to tell him. He just loved the way her eyes glittered with eagerness.

  “Do tell.”

“Rina’s pregnant. Not far along and she’s a little nervous because it took awhile, but she’s excited.”

That explained the conversation about kids. “That’s great news.”

“It is. But you don’t know yet, so act surprised if Ben tells you. They’re keeping it a secret for right now.”

  “How come you know?”

Her brow cocked in the delectable way he loved. “Because it’s my job to know everything about my best friends. Plus, Rina let it slip a little, and we just put two and two together.”

To his surprise, her smile dipped, her brows creasing with what looked like sadness.

“What’s wrong?” He stopped dancing, pulling her off the dance floor to a quiet corner.

“Do you really think I’ll make a good mother?”

He pulled her snug against his body, his arms tightening around her. “The best. Never doubt it. Please.”

  “Can we start tonight?”

At the thought of making love with her, especially to create a child together, he perked up. A slow smile grew on her lips, indicating she could feel how excited that thought made him.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

“I’m ready to leave whenever you are.”

  “The night’s only half over.”

Bending his head, pressing light kisses onto her neck up to her ear, he nibbled before whispering, “The night hasn’t even started.”

  “You’re officially crazy.”

His kisses made their way down, across her chest and up the other side of her neck to her other ear, where he nibbled some more.

“We’re in a room full of people, Sauer. You’re devouring me as if we’re alone.”

Not stopping his torrent of kisses, he made a path to her lips, delivering one light and tender kiss that said it all. “I’m embracing the crazy. You’re my everything, and I’m not afraid to show it.”

“Mmm…yes. Crazy. I like this side of you.”

He devoured her mouth once again, his hands roaming to places they shouldn’t in a room full of people.

  Yeah, he was crazy.

  Crazy in love.

  About the Author

I love anything that has to do with romance. As long as there’s a happy ending, I’m a happy camper. I love baseball (Go Twins!) and creating awesome crafts. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, working in that field for several years before I became a stay-at-home mom. When I’m not hanging out with my wonderful family, I’m writing a sweet contemporary romance or a romantic suspense that keeps you guessing until the end. I have a few more amazing stories in the works. If you would like to connect with me or see important news, head to my website at http://www.amandasiegrist.com.
