He stepped back from her putting enough distance between them.
"Thank you." Her voice came out all breathless and she cursed herself.
Was that the best that she could do?
"Mind your step." His voice was cold.
It grated over her nerves. She flinched. "Why do you hate me so much?"
He angled his head. The sea dark of his eyes deepened. "I don’t hate you. I don’t have any feelings, not for you. Not for anyone." He turned and stored away in that elegant gait of his which she was coming to recognize.
"Is it that easy for you? To walk away from me?" To pretend that nothing exists between us?"
He didn’t pause but kept walking.
A flicker of anger sizzle down her spine.
So he couldn’t even be bothered to reply to her. Was she so insignificant in his eyes? She’d had it then. Had enough of being avoided by him. All that time, he’d taught her how to control her powers on the psychic level. All the past few weeks that tension had been building up and now she couldn’t stand it any more.
With a low growl, she covered the distance between them and pounced on him.
He stepped aside. She went sprawling to the muddy ground, and turned her head at the last second to avoid her cheek from scrunching into the mud.
With a snarl of anger she sprang up and threw herself at him. Again he moved.
But that time he caught her around the waist and hauled her up against him. His arm was around her waist. The other one just below her breasts. Her back slammed against the hard wall of his chest.
Oh she was so pissed.
A growl rumbled up. The scent of dragon smoke seeped into the air. "Let me go." She hissed at him,
"No." There was a hard edge to his voice.
She struggle against him, the curve of her butt brushed against the front of his pants. A part of her noticed that he was hard. A sizzle of heat flared to life in her lower belly. That only made her even more mad. This man had been ignoring her all this time. It seemed her body did not know better than to betray her. Why was she so attracted to him?
She hit back with her elbow.
There was low huff from his as the breath rushed out.
At least she’d managed to hit something. A flare of satisfaction flowed through her.
She raised her knee, and swung her foot back, determined to catch him in the groin. Only that time he turned her around. The next moment she was on the ground on her back. And he was leaning over her.
She raised her fists, her claws slid out. She couldn’t shift, but damn if she wasn’t going to use every little piece of armor at her disposal.
He grabbed her arms, yanked it up over her head and shackled her.
She snarled at him. A haze of red descended behind her eyes. She was so tired of fighting. So tired of constantly trying to justify to herself why she was still alive. After what Tibor had done to her, he’d tried to break her. Just like he was. With a little scream, she rose up, smashed her chest against his. Her head came up, and she tried to butt him. With his free hand he grabbed her hair and yanked it back.
She cried out in frustration.
Her legs scissored around his waist.
He leaned into her. He was much bigger than her. Yet at part of her noticed that he took care to not hurt her. He only applied enough pressure using his weight to hold her down.
"Let go damn it. Just once give in to your instincts. Hurt me. Slap me. Anything but this polite distance you’ve maintained so far."
He froze. The black of his iris…no it wasn’t black at all. It was a dark gray really, Storm clouds gathered in them. It was quite beautiful, like the gray swirls in the skies just before the skies opened up.
"You have no idea what you are saying."
"Oh yeah?" The muscles of her face stretched. Her lips twisted. "You scared to show me who you really are? Is that why you insist on hiding yourself behind the guise of that emotionless facade?"
"I’ve been trying to make excuses for you all along." HIs voice grated over her skin. "I told myself you were still reeling from when Tibor tried to break you. That you needed time to adjust. That’s why I agreed to train you in psychic warfare, so you’d always be able to protect yourself."
There was something in his eyes she hadn’t seen before. An edge of desperation? A reckless light? She wasn’t sure.
Either way, she was past caring. Red sparks pounded against her brain. Her vision focused in on him. "And what do you think now?"
His gaze dropped to her mouth. His jaw hardened. "Now, I think we should just fuck it out..."
