Soul Frequency (Frequency Series Book 2) Page 4

Kayci laughed. “Admitting that is the first sign of true genius. You’ll be ready to conquer the world in no time.”

“Yeah, as long as the world doesn’t conquer me first.”

  Chapter 7

Jordan thought he was awake, he felt like he was, but then he realized where he actually was. It was in the odd, red laser world of the frequency plane, the place where all of his question about the psychic realm could be answered. Usually with some stupid cryptic response from Anna—the red laser guide who became forever trapped in this electric psychic world.

He’d been here before, and each time he was reminded that he could become trapped here. This place was some sort of snare for psychics who go too far into their heads, too far away from the flesh and too far away from reality. There was a line between the physical and spiritual world that all psychics needed to balance, and the really good ones risked losing touch with the physical world. The world of energy was too temping, too limitless, and that was fruit from the forbidden tree.

Being a gifted master of psychic energy was demanding, even more demanding than being a gifted master of Italian cuisine, which he was.

He stood up and moved across the red laser-drawn world. Of course, you don’t walk across the laser world, you just moved. The constant rapid blinking, as the mysterious blood red laser draws your body and surroundings, is more soothing than annoying.

With the stroke of a master artist, the laser burst from above and drew a finely detailed world into being. It was the shopping mall, the shootings and Kayci standing over Brett’s body.

“Hello?” Jordan called, hoping Anna would come by. He had no idea why he was seeing this. Then suddenly the scene blinked out and the spanning laser grid began drawing another scene. It was another shooting scene. He didn’t recognize it, but there were bodies all over the place, at least ten, but he was not drawn to their deaths he was drawn to only one, the man with the gun who was gunned down by police as he watched. He saw the man’s eyes, as he always did while witnessing death, blink out and the spirit drain.

That scene phased out and another began to conjure. One by one this went on, each scene staying less time than the one before it, until a rapid flashing blood red world seemed to scream by in a flash. This couldn’t be real, these could not be scenes of the past. But they were coming so fast there must have been hundreds of them, mass shootings all coming in the future. It was going to be some sort of mass shooting apocalypse that no police force could stop because the shooter could be anyone anywhere at anytime.

After a barrage of imagery that was blowing his mind it all stopped. Everything was black. Then a single red laser beamed from above, and began drawing the flowing dress and the long wavy hair of Anna. It crafted her in amazing detail from the lacy cuffs of her dress to the smooth curves of her body. He had no idea if this was what she looked like in the flesh but if so she was very attractive.

“Hello, Jordan.” She said in her electronic distant voice.

“Anna, what does this all mean?”

“It is nice to see you too.”

“Yeah—yeah you too. Now what the hell does this mean?”

“You know I cannot tell you all things as they are, or will be.”

“I’m not asking for all things, just this one.”

“Sometimes one thing is all things.”

Jordan sighed. Anna was so frustrating. She could never just answer a freaking question. He wanted to find a mirror and just scatter her laser body all over the room. “Anna, why am I here?”

She unclasped her hands and held them out to the side. “You are here for the same reason you’re always here, to see the truth. To see the past, to see the future as it may be written.”

Jordan glanced around the black space. “I only see you.”

“You’ve seen many things since you’ve been here. Each scene was a moment you must feel before it’s seen, understand before it is written, and become before it is time.”

“Oh for the love of… What’re you talking about?”

Anna shimmered closer to him. “Jordan, you must quell your frustration. It is this unrest in your soul, which is causing the block in the channel. You must find the cause of your frustration in order to help them.”

  “Help who?”

“You are a savior frequency, energy of the highest order. Now that you’ve learned the ways, you must understand the method. Through the eyes, you see the soul, and from the eyes, the soul is set free. This is where you find the answers as you always have, but now you have the tools to unlock the gates.”

Jordan thought about what she’d said. At first, it made no sense and then suddenly it did. “I was always drawn to the eyes.”

“Yes, because the soul is the key to all this, Jordan. Without the soul, there is no psychic energy. The soul is the energy we see and feel. Those lines of frequency, reveal the true self of the soul. No one on earth can hide the truth inside their soul from those that can see it. It is the soul frequency that drives us all.”

“The soul frequency. So, you’re saying the soul, is like its own entity?”

Anna smiled and looked down. “We are our soul, Jordan. It is not an entity—it is you. The soul is tied to the body, inextricably on this world. When it leaves the body, the body is gone forever. But the soul lives on to the next world. The soul lives on forever, we live on forever.”

  “Like heaven and or hell?”

“That’s not for me to say, Jordan. I am a practitioner of energy, like you. We do not understand all mysteries of the universe, but the secrets of the soul are apparent to us. We understand that the soul keeps all the secrets of time and history.”

Something about Anna’s past came to him. “You’re not lost Anna, are you?”

She nodded. “I am trapped by my own doing.”

“What I mean is, your human body, it’s not still here waiting for you to return.”

She looked down. “No, my soul was unlinked from its vessel.”

  “What happened?”

“That is not my mystery to tell you yet. It won’t help you to know those answers. Perhaps someday you will understand.”

Jordan wasn’t going to push it. “What’s my mission here? Why am I being called to save these killers?”

“You know I cannot reveal that. You must discover the truth on your own. It is the way it’s always been. It is the way it must always be. You must find the key to unlock the mystery. I wish I could tell you all things at once but I cannot. Even I must follow rules.”

Jordan looked at his laser red hands. “Anna, I’m afraid. I’ve never been afraid before but something about all this scares me.”

“Fear is good, Jordan. Fear is necessary for people like us to learn. But you must learn to balance the line, you must learn that fear is only a conduit to revelation, it is not real. Fear is only an illusion created by the mind to teach. It is the ultimate teacher. Do you understand?”

“I understand. It’s kinda like fear is the mother of invention, sort of. It pushes you into that fight or flight realm and you either shrink or you shine. You either use what you’ve learned or you get gobbled up by the monster.”

Anna shimmered close to him and smiled. “Oh, Jordan, you’re my very favorite. I know we’ve only known each other for a very short time, but you have something so very special about you. I’ve seen many practitioners of energy, but you surpass them all in understanding and likeability, and it’s time for you to take the next step.” She held out her hand and a small orange marble rested in her palm. “I don’t give this to everyone, but I’d like you to have it. This orb will help the unrest in your soul. It will lead you to revelation faster because I believe in my soul that you can handle rapid advancement. I have only three, for all my days, only three. I’ve never given one to anybody but I give this one to you.”

“Why would you do that? I can’t accept that.”

“You can, and you will. I ask of you to take this, for me, it is the way it sho
uld be.”

Jordan reached out to take it. “What is it?”

“It is nourishing to the frequency or your soul.” She placed the marble in his hand and closed her hands around his. “I feel good with you having this. It feels right. With this in your soul you will learn to complete the circle.”

When Jordan opened his hand to look at the orange marble, it grew brighter and larger and exploded in a flash and the laser world disappeared in a flash.

  * * *

Jordan gasped for air as he sat up in the bed. He wasn’t sure where he was until the poster of a now classic yellow Porsche shifted into focus. He’d put that poster up when he was twelve, back when this basement was the center of his life. He looked in his palm expecting to see the orange marble but there was nothing there.

Kayci touched his arm from the other side of the bed. “Hey, you okay?”

  He nodded. “I was—”

  “With Anna?”

  “Yeah.”

Kayci sat up. “What’d she say?”

He tossed off the covers. “You know Anna. She didn’t say anything but she said everything.”

“Sometimes it’s what she didn’t say.”

Jordan rolled his eyes. “Oh, not you too. Just once I’d like a direct answer to one of these questions.” He got up and went over to the small sink in the kitchenette. “She gave me something.”

  “What did she give you?”

He looked at his empty hands. “I guess nothing. It was something but I guess now it’s nothing.”

  “What was it?”

Jordan wanted to tell her, but for some reason he didn’t. He felt like it was supposed to be a secret even though Anna didn’t suggest that it should be. “Nothing I guess.”

Kayci got out of bed and strode over to him. “Hey, I know it can be frustrating.”

Jordan twisted the faucet and filled a small plastic cup. “You got that right.” He drank a gulp and placed the cup on the white counter top. “I don’t get it. I’m supposed to be all psychic and stuff, yet I can’t understand what’s in my own head.”

She put her hand on his back. “I know, Jordan. But you have to fight through it. You’ve done some amazing things already, much quicker than anyone I’ve ever seen. But you’re still in that stage where your understanding is going to wane at times. Doubting yourself is natural.”

He turned to her. “But, it seemed like everything was going to get better.”

  “I promise you it will.”

Jordan suddenly felt the black box of the frequency monitor pop up into his head. The pulsing jagged lines looked like a colorful heart monitor. He closed his eyes for a second and concentrated on one stray blue frequency that caught his attention.

Kayci must have noticed what he was doing because he immediately saw her signature line come to life and enter the graph. There were many frequency lines at play at any given moment. The weaker common lines were low, skimming the surface if you will. Contrary to common sense, the weaker ones were also the brightest colors of white, yellow and green. The most powerful lines were high up on the bar and dark red in color, just like the laser lines that drew Anna and her world.

“Do you see that?” He asked Kayci.

  “I see it.”

  “Can you read it?”

“No.” She replied. “It’s way too erratic. Can you?”

“It’s not right, it shouldn’t be that color.”

  “I know.”

“Wait,” Jordan concentrated. “We need to go.”

  Chapter 8

Jordan sped into the parking lot. The spanning office complex was alive with morning activity. Business casual people slinging briefcases scurried to their daily appointments and jumped out of his way as he honked the horn rapidly.

Slamming up onto the curb, he threw the SUV in park and jumped out of the still running vehicle. Feet digging hard he pushed a young businesswoman out of his way, turning to her he said, “Run, back to your car and keep going.”

Kayci, nodded to her. “Trust him.” She stopped and yelled to everyone trying to make their way into the building. “Everyone go back to your vehicles. I’m a federal agent.”

Jordan didn’t stick around to see if they believed her, he just kept running, following the cobalt blue line of frequency that was pulling him. He wasn’t even sure what he was running towards but he expected to hear gunshots any second now.

Generic office hallways streamed by in a blur of open doors looking in on cubicle mazes. Random artificial trees dotted each corner. None of the passing scenes mattered as much as the destination, which had become clear.

Pulling up, he stood at the wide doors of a cafeteria. It was empty. Or so he thought. Kayci finally caught up to him and stopped at the threshold.

They walked cautiously into the room and saw a small group of people herded into the corner. A young man stood in front of them holding a duffle bag and a pistol. The moment Jordan saw his twitching face, he knew.

There were three dead bodies on the floor, another two people bleeding, wounded and writhing in pain. The gunman pointed his gun at his head and pulled the trigger but only empty clicks issued. He tossed his gun on the tiles.

Kayci lowered her weapon but Jordan turned to her. “Put it away. It’s not going to be of any use here.” Kayci shook her head in protest. But he eased her hand back towards the holster and she complied.

Jordan turned to face the man. Sweat poured through his fine blond hair and trickled down his narrow acne-scarred face. His lips and eyes twitched, nervous ticks rolled through his forehead.

Jordan held up his hands. “What’re we doing here today?”

The man looked at him oddly. “W—what?”

  “What’s your name?”

The man jerked his head in a tilt and forced out the word. “Ronald.”

“What’re we doing here today, Ronald?”

Ronald looked at him, clearly struggling not to jerk his head. “Are you a cop?” His head jerked.

Jordan sighed. “No, I’m not a cop.”

Ronald held up an old flip cell phone with some wires sticking out of it. “Don’t moooove.”

Jordan raised his hands higher. “Hey, I’m not moving.”

“What do you want—do you want?”

“I just want to know about you, Ronald.” Jordan took a small step. “I just want to know what we’re doing today.”

Ronald’s eyes and lips moved in an unnatural manner one could not possibly duplicate if they tried. “What the hell—the hell I doing?”

Jordan glanced over at Kayci. She’d slid her gun back out of the holster and to the ready position. She was angling to take a shot. But he needed more time, he was almost there. “Ronald, do you really want to blow up these people?”

“Of course I do—I do—I do it’s the only way.”

“It’s the only way to what, Ronald? What’s the point here? Is this really what you want? Or are you compelled to do it? Do you feel like you can’t control yourself?”

His head jerked hard, violently twisting his entire body. “You don’t understand you don’t—don’t—don’t get what there is paper in time to car and grrr—dist re durg perbun pffft.” His tongue stuck out of the side of his mouth in spasm while is jaw jacked open. After a few more, inhuman noises, he got control of himself and looked around.

A moment of complete confusion seemed to take his face for a fleeting few seconds. Fear, wonder, and desperation flittered through his expression before the determined scowl returned to his face. And in that moment Jordan knew. “Ronald, you don’t want to do this.”

  Roland turned an evil smile.

Jordan screamed, “Run!” to the people behind Ronald and they did.

Kayci fired one shot, hitting Ronald in the chest. He didn’t go down right away and instead started pressing buttons on the cell phone.

Jordan ran to the injured man hobbling on one leg and pushed him towards the door, he helped another woman who seemed to be frozen with f
ear get going. Ronald dropped to his knees as a long beep issued from the phone.

Jordan turned and both he and Kayci ran towards the wide doors. A second after they passed through the door a blast rocked at their backs. It hit Jordan so hard it felt like someone threw a truck at him.

He flew into the air, slamming into Kayci who toppled over a petit woman and they all fell in a heap at the end of the hallway as the concussion wave settled.

Jordan rolled over and looked back, debris from the blast lay all around him. Pieces of concrete and tile fell off him with a clatter as he stood. He turned back to Kayci who was also getting up, as was the petit brunette in the business suit. She was shaking, crying and freaking out. He went up to her, touched her hand. “You’re okay, go home and hug your husband and daughter.”

She tilted her head and looked at him. “Who are you?”

  “I’m Jordan.”

  She searched his eyes. “How’d—”

“Go, go see the EMTs and get checked out, make sure you’re okay.” He manually turned her body and gave her a soft push towards the exit door at the end of the hall. He looked at Kayci. “Are you alright?”

She brushed off her jeans and blue V-neck shirt. “I’m fine. And you know what’s going on here, don’t you.”

  Jordan nodded. “I do.”

She nodded. “We officially have a hijacker.”

“That kid had no idea what he was doing, because he wasn’t doing it.”

“That’s why you felt like you were there to save the gunman at the mall, because you were. Just like you were here to save that guy, not the people in the building.”

Jordan leaned against the wall. “That’s why it didn’t make sense.”

  “This is not good.”

  “We gotta find the source.”

She took a deep breath. “Yeah, that could be easier said than done.”

  Chapter 9

Kayci looked in the mirror at the bags under her eyes, the wild disorder of her blonde hair and the giant pores on her nose. That Jordan found her attractive at all was a miracle. The fact that they were inextricably linked for life was probably the only reason he hadn’t run for the hills by now.
