Seeing Bonnie and Bishop, she headed their way. “Hey.” She smiled at them, noticing the blush on Bonnie’s face. Hmmm, interesting. “Ah, have you seen Ronan?”
“I saw him heading that way a little while ago.” Bishop pointed toward the field past the house.
“Okay, thanks.” Kira headed that way, but her heels were sticking into the mud. She reached down to take them off, but came off center and almost fell. Strong hands steadied her.
“Careful.” Viktor helped her straighten up. “Heels aren’t the best footwear on a ranch.”
“Heels aren’t the best footwear anywhere.” Kira grinned, then grabbed his arm to take off the other one. “Thanks for the assistance.”
“No problem, anytime.” Viktor turned to leave, but Kira stopped him.
“Viktor, are you staying around for a while?” Kira asked, sure he could hear the hope in her voice.
“We won’t leave you all to face this alone, Kira.” Viktor gave her a nod then disappeared into the darkness.
Kira knew they wouldn’t but still had to be sure. She turned, carrying her shoes in search of Ronan. She spotted him leaning against the fence with Jackson. The man looked damn good in anything. A tux, jeans, or a cowboy hat. It didn’t matter. She walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“I’ve been looking for you.” She laid her cheek on his back. “And can I say you look very handsome tonight, Mr. McDonald.”
She felt him chuckle and grinned against his back. He reached around and pulled her into his arms.
“And you, Ms. Grail, are the most beautiful woman in the world,” he replied, then took a deep breath. “And smell so damn good.”
“Why, thank you.” She leaned back to look up at him. “Why are you way out here? There’s food and dancing. Don’t you want to dance with me?” She had noticed his change during the ceremony and wondered about it. The look on his face now told her something was wrong. “Ronan, what is it?” she questioned, but when he looked away, she brought his gaze back to hers. “Tell me.”
He shifted his weight, staring out over her head. “You would make a wonderful mother.”
“Yes, I would,” Kira agreed without hesitation. “Thank you.”
He finally looked down at her. “I can’t give you kids. I honestly never thought about that until tonight as I watched you hold Drew. Why it hit me tonight after seeing you with Drew so many times before I don’t know, but—”
“Ronan, do you want children?” Kira interrupted him.
“I can’t—”
“Dammit, Ronan, answer me.” Kira frowned. “It’s a simple question.”
“Yes, I would love to have children,” Ronan answered, his face stormy with anger. “But that doesn’t matter. I can’t, and it’s not fair for me to take that away from you. Plus we still have Orjyll and now Wyrick, so maybe now isn’t the time. I just don’t want you to regret that in the future I can’t give you something you want.”
“Ronan, we can adopt. When the time is right, we have options.” Kira touched his cheek. “I’ve actually talked to Nicole who worked, still works for children’s services. There are so many kids out there who need good homes.”
“And you’d be good with that?” Ronan asked, looking hopeful.
“Of course I would, like I said, when the time is right.” Kira tiptoed up and kissed his cheek. “I love you, Ronan. You’re not getting rid of me that easily. Now come dance with me.”
“Why are you carrying your shoes.” Ronan took them from her and tossed them in the grass.
“Ah, because your ranch is trying to eat them. Every time I step, they sink.” She grinned, wrapping her arms around him.
“How about we have our first dance here?” He wrapped his arms around her waist and swayed to the distant music.
“I’d say we could stay here all night.” Kira leaned her head back and gazed up into his eyes.
“And have Mira hate me? No.” Ronan pulled her closer to him. “Just this dance and then we’ll go back. I’ve got you for the rest of my life.”
“That you do, cowboy.” Kira felt like she was floating on air and in fact, after glancing down, her feet were off the ground. She truly hoped this dance never ended, but as she gazed off into the night sky, the haze over the moon clouded her happiness. Her eyes lowered to see Bonnie also staring up into the sky before glancing her way. Nothing good came when a dark moon was shaded with a reddish haze that only a witch could see. As their eyes met, something passed between them before Bonnie turned and disappeared into the darkness.
