“Please Mrs. Matthews I need to see Alexis, if I can explain-“
“You done enough explaining at the stadium,” Dan admonished.
“Alexis!” Shaun called out loudly, “Alexis, please I need to see you!”
“Don’t go yelling in my house. I’m calling the cops!” Dan told him, pushing him back. Shaun staggered at the porch. “We raised her as best we could since my brother and his wife died, and here you are destroying her trust-“
“Uncle Dan, what’s going on?” a voice interrupted. Alexis’ eyes widened, seeing Shaun at the porch. “What are you doing here?”
“I need to talk to you,” Shaun said, taking a step forward.
Dan was ready to punch him.
Alexis walked in front of her uncle, fully opening the door. “We have nothing to talk about.”
“I’ve been trying to find ways to talk to you, tried calling you. I wanted to explain-“
“You have nothing to explain. They told me already.”
“Who did?”
“Uncle Dan’s team, your team. I heard the truth from their mouths.”
“You need to hear it from mine,” he said, “I’ve been going nuts, telling myself I didn’t need to do this. That I could go on with my life, be the quarterback I’ve always wanted to be. But I couldn’t. Every day, I found myself thinking about you. Every day, I thought about how you were doing, when I was going to see you again. It isn’t normal for me.”
Under the porch lights, his face was turning red. This was as embarrassing as it came but he wanted to finish what he had started. He took another breath, determined more than ever, now that she was in front of him.
“I saw you talking to coach at the stands, I told myself you were the most beautiful person I’d ever seen and I wanted to know you better. And here comes a teammate I hated beyond doubt, seeing the way I looked at you, challenging me to date you. I was an asshole, my pride took over. I didn’t want to lose to that bet, he was going to quit taunting me and quit aiming for the same spot. It was a stupid thing, I know.
The day I took you out for lunch was the day I was glad I took on that bet. I met you, the real you, even if I had a feeling you were keeping secrets and I didn’t want to pry. I wanted to date you, I wanted to know more about you. And seeing you happy made me want to do that forever, if it’s possible.
You don’t deserve this from anyone. You deserve only happiness, and I hope you can give me a chance so I can keep showing you happiness. The thing is, I love you and I’ve never loved anyone else the way I love you. I know I didn’t do things right, I dated you and didn’t tell you, because I was a coward. I’m not much of a romantic and you have no idea how sweat my hands are right now, but please, accept my apology. It’s what’s important to me right now.”
“Why does this sound like a proposal?” Alexis interrupted, her eyes narrowed. “Why does it sound like you can’t live without me?”
“Because I can’t,” Shaun replied, “It sounds too hyperbolic-“
“You know what that means?” Alexis said, still disbelieving him.
“It sounds like I’m exaggerating. But it’s true,” Shaun said, sounding defeated. “I remember Professor Tillman using that word,” he added.
Alexis almost laughed but she kept a straight face. “Why would I believe you? You lied to me, our relationship started with a lie.”
“I’m here because I want to start with the truth this time,” Shaun told her. He looked at Dan and his wife, Ellie. “Coach, you know how stupid I can get, but I’m stupidly in love with your niece. I’m asking for your forgiveness, too.”
Dan eyed Alexis and then he looked at Ellie, who was clearly touched by what the young man had said.
“This isn’t my decision, boy. It’s all up to Alexis because she’s the one you lied to.”
Shaun looked back at Alexis who was staring at him with cold eyes. “No matter what you do, I’ll never forget that you lied to me.”
Shaun cringed but she continued.
“You were an asshole from day one. I tried to put things in perspective, tried to be in your shoes, but I knew you were masquerading as a nice guy when in fact, you aren’t. I still told myself I’d give you a chance. Hey, maybe this guy is so desperate to know me, he’d order coffee he doesn’t know a thing about, just to get my attention. It was my mistake to give you a chance to get into my life.”
Shaun’s eyes flinched. That hurt more than he had expected. He didn’t imagine that calmly said words from Alexis could hurt more than his father’s rants. He would have rather been slapped or punched than hear her say those things.
“It was a mistake. A mistake I’m paying for now, because I was gullible. But it’s a mistake I was glad I made.”
Shaun looked up and saw her eyes. Did he just hear it right? “What?” he said.
“What?” Dan and Ellie said together.
“I’m glad I made that mistake. You went out of your way, risking life and limb to save me and you just met me. You did all you could to get my attention. You allowed me to cry when I thought I couldn’t show this vulnerability to anyone else. You tolerated my stuck-up persona when our personalities are on opposite ends. I tolerated you, too. I have different reasons, but I think we have something that’s the same.”
Shaun’s heart pounded, hearing this confession from her. He took a step closer. “Does this mean-?” he couldn’t finish, unable to believe the change.
“It took me four days to figure out if I really felt this way for you,” Alexis said.
“It took me an hour to find out I really liked you,” Shaun began, “and I hope you won’t have to decide for the rest of your life if you want me to stay. I’m not as smart as you are but I sure as hell will try to annoy you less.”
Alexis stepped closer to him, she smiled, looking at his eyes. He was face to face with her this time. They didn’t even notice Dan and Ellie smiling and exiting the scene, determined to give them the privacy they needed.
“Are you sure about this? Dating me permanently?” Shaun asked her.
She nodded. “Are you sure about this?”
“Hell yeah.”
Shaun leaned down to kiss Alexis as she tiptoed to kiss him back, flinging her arms over his neck- never wanting this moment to stop.
