Melodies of Blood I Page 20

by Alonso, Maialen; J. Garza, Annie;

  “What are you thinking Caleb?”

“Nothing, just trying to organize the thoughts in my head.”

“I see,” Alexander, sighed knowing what was on his mind. “You can’t spend your time worrying. At the moment we can’t make a move.”

“Have you searched for a site for Amanda and her people?” Caleb asked.

“Yes, we found some laboratories, but we have to bring the machinery from the other labs. The labs in the city are not as well equipped and they can’t do much with them.”

  “You take care of that.”

Alexander left, but not before looking at him with sorrow. He was not sure what conversation Caleb had had with Amanda, but his mood was quite low from that day, and yet he could do nothing. The frustration was like a heavy punishment on his heart. Alexander wanted to make him happy, bring back Meryl to see him act again as usual, but now it was something completely impossible for him. Alexander had so many things on his mind that he could not cope, because it was he who took care of organizing everything in the city, and he was also concerned about Pein who was seeking allies in all places. Alexander knew he was doing his job well. Every few days humans or vampires arrived who had met with Pein. Then Alexander realized the big mistake of vampires. Transforming humans who had suffered years of abuse would take its toll and it was clear on which side they were going to be. It was evident that they sought vengeance beyond words, with blood, which made them stronger. Humans would not be useful in a war. Thousands die by their low endurance, strength and speed, so the more vampires that arrived, the more chances to win.

Legrant trained the humans, not to kill but to defend themselves. Caleb suspected that Epsilon knew what was happening in his zone. In fact, he was almost sure a spy had infiltrated his zone. He was not surprised because the dimensions of everything taking place were unimaginable. By then, all the great lords would be aware, and that meant it was the time he started traveling to see them. He would travel by plane. Some ancient vampires had arrived. They had been pilots in their human lives and he had planes located in the suburbs that he had kept in good condition for decades. He would not go alone, for he was aware of his new position and the danger it brought. He would take Jeoff and Andre, the boy had begun to gain his trust. They were his main bodyguards, and he would also be accompanied by other vampires.

Caleb had seen Andre help Legrant in training. Showing humans a real battle between two vampires. It was a sight to see, no doubt about it, the boy deceived the eye in full view. He seemed so serene and young that no one imagined that he was a real fighting machine.

Caleb decided to go see Elizabeth first. She was the only woman ruling Sigma at a high level. She was a vampire to take up arms in every way, for better or worse, but Caleb knew she hated Epsilon. Something had happened between them, and he hoped that that hatred was strong enough to want to make her declare war and shed blood. Not to mention Ajax, leader of the Gamma Zone was already aware of the situation and knew he was a kindhearted vampire. He did not like bloodshed. In his hundreds of years of life. Ajax had lived through cruel and barbarous wars, and that was the key to cajole Elizabeth. Caleb would use the feelings she had toward the seasoned warrior.

With his thoughts in order, Caleb boarded the plane. It had been maintained in perfect condition since the devastation. At that moment, he was proud of his decisions, because in the past they had called him crazy for having planes. As he sat down, he noticed that one of his little secrets could soon make a difference in winning the coming war or at least help save some lives.

It would be a long journey, but having all the amenities readily available, he wouldn’t even notice where he was. Caleb had time to think, but unfortunately, his mind was busy at all times thinking of Meryl. Damn woman, she had taken over his mind.

“You look thoughtful,” Jeoff said sitting beside him. “Meryl?” Caleb nodded making his friend smile. “If someone had told me at some point in my life since I met you. That you’d end up so enamored of a human girl. I would have fallen on the floor from laughing so hard.”

“I assure you. I would have as well.”

“Don’t make that face, my friend. If I’m honest, I admit I’m glad. I like the girl, she never has bad intentions. This is the first time I can tell you. You have a good eye.”

Caleb looked surprised because Jeoff did not talk a lot and even less about romantic things. However, they had spent a long time together and he knew his expressions. They had always been disapproving with each of the women with whom he had a relationship. As soon as they put one foot in the house, because the women always wanted something. They always came with some dark purpose, either because of his position, self-interest, or they wanted expensive clothes. Of course, Caleb gave them what they wanted as long as he got what he wanted.

Remembering the women now made him nauseous because they brought to his mind the smiling face of an innocent Meryl. He admitted he adored her naiveté, but not having been able to have her completely was torture and a pending issue that he was willing to solve as soon as he had the opportunity because something told him that once she was his. No one could ever take her away. At the end of the day, she had his heart, and she could not imagine the extent to which she belonged to him. Perhaps it was the first time in his life he had rejected more than one woman in such a short period. As expected, becoming one of the big four had put him in the crosshairs of every female, vampire and human, of Alpha Zone. Of course, nothing had come of their efforts. During this time in his life, Caleb was unable to touch any woman other than Meryl. It made sense as he had fallen in love and no woman other than Meryl seemed beautiful now.

The heat was beginning to be felt inside the plane. The air conditioning did not work as well as in its heyday. Caleb stared out the small window at the vast desert stretching to infinity, drier and larger than it had ever been. The ancient Muslim countries formed the heart of the Sigma Zone, one of the most precarious because of its geographical location.

  “It’s worse than I remembered.”

“It’s been a long time since we’ve come here, Caleb,” Jeoff said slowly. “More than ninety years.”

The plane began to descend gently. The pilot knew what he was doing, but where once there was a runway, now there was nothing but gravel and sand.

They got ready for the shock of the sweltering heat. Thank God, the sun no longer warmed the place, because otherwise, not even parasites could inhabit the place. The weather had changed throughout the world. Some areas had become heated and others were completely frozen.

“An uncomfortable visit.” Caleb heard as soon as his feet stepped on the orange soil.

  “Dee.”

“Hi, Caleb. It’s been a long time.”

“Yes, thank God,” Caleb replied through clenched teeth. “You look better than I imagined.”

“What you imagined or expected?” Dee spat out annoyed. “It doesn’t matter. We knew you’d come. Elizabeth is eager to see you. Although, I can’t imagine why.You could make even the dead vomit up their guts.”

“You’re still a delicate lady,” Caleb said sarcastically

“I know,” Dee smiled mischievously as she winked.

Caleb tried to smile as he climbed into a red car. Caleb knew how scathing this woman was. She wasn’t afraid of anything or anyone, and only respected one person, and that was Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a beautiful woman of golden hair and tanned skin that was as deadly as a black widow. However, getting them on his side could change everything, but he had his plans well established. He would make sure to let them know that he would go to Ajax after visiting them, and Elizabeth would know that Ajax would be on his side. Which would bring her to his side, because Caleb knew the feelings she had for Ajax, it was something that only Caleb was aware of.
