“I love you too, sweetie.”
As Cassy stayed and talked with her mother, Frank hobbled out the front door and out toward the fields where Brianna and Aidan were playing with the other kids and burning off tension. Many of those kids were still waiting for parents to come home from war, yet some never would.
Cassy sat near her mother, knowing her time was nearly up. She wanted to spend every last second with her until the very end. She held back her tears, focused on cherishing the present.
Life would go on, she knew, with all its ups and downs, triumphs and losses. The Clan would be ready to face whatever came, and maybe, just maybe, she and Frank would still be alive to deal with them together. But whatever happened between then and now, Cassy would be there for them, and so would Frank. Tonight, they’d celebrate victory and surviving. Tomorrow, they’d bury their dead. Because, in the end, life had to go on. And maybe now, they’d find it worth living in a way they never had before the war.
