“What are you doing? Get my drink. I’m fine, and I don’t need your company.” She glanced around. “Where’s Camille?”

“I guess she’s home with her parents. I have only one lady’s whereabouts that concerns me. I’ve been looking for you all over the place.”

“I’ve been tryy…trying to tell you I’m not good enough to be your wife.” Her words slurred out. She looked around as he walked down her hallway. “Where are we going?”

“I’d like to take you to bed, but instead”—he found her bedroom, walked through, and into the bathroom—“I’m going to put you in the shower.”

“No, you are not.” She pushed his hands away as he started unbuttoning her shirt.

“If you insist.” Reaching in, he turned the water on cold and lifted her inside. “Stay there.” Quickly, he undressed while she turned the faucet to warmer.

  “You’ve ruined my outfit.”

“It was your choice.” He got in naked beside her.

“I didn’t invite you to join me.”

“True.” He cupped her face and kissed her, then asked, “Shall I leave?”

  “Look at me,” she demanded.

Her hair was soaked and fell straight around her face, her clothes clung to her curves, and her green eyes looked confused and sad.

“I’m looking at the woman I love.”

“No, you can’t. I’m ugly. When your mother tells you how bad you look, it has to be the truth.” Tears spilled out of her eyes and down her cheeks.

“Darlin’, when has your mother ever told you the truth? Did she tell you and Gina when she was going to leave you as small children?”

  “No.”

“Can you remember ever being able to trust what she said?”

  “No.”

“Then don’t believe her now. She is jealous of your youth, and the fact that even a scar can’t take away your beauty.”

  “You are a fast-talker.”

“But you can trust me. I know you’re scared to take the risk, but I won’t let you down.”

“What if I can’t stand living in Frontier City?”

“That might be an insurmountable problem. I understand because I can’t live anywhere else than Montana and be happy. If the city is really what you want, I’ll have to let you go.”

“Sheriff Grady said his wife went home for visits frequently at first until she settled in.”

“I like his wife. You have to meet her someday and talk with her. They have a strong love that saw them through the first difficult months of their marriage. Don’t tell me what you’ve decided yet. Let’s go out and enjoy dinner. Then we’ll talk again later.”

“My head’s too fussy to talk seriously now.” Her stomach growled. “I guess I am hungry.”

Sam escorted her into a small restaurant she’d never heard of. “How did you find this place?”

“Clay’s been here. He told us about it. I thought then that when I had a special girl this was where I’d bring her.”

The lights were dim and soft music played in the background. The maître d’ took them to a table in a corner. Sylvia glanced around. The tables were arranged for maximum privacy by the use of space, curtains, and plant arrangements.

She leaned forward and whispered in Sam’s ear. “This looks like a place you’d take your lover on a rendezvous.”

He nodded. “I know. It is quite impressive, and you are my lover.”

“True, I rather like being incognito. I feel like I’m undercover on an assignment.”

“And I’m a dangerous man who has secrets you want.”

“I’ll have to get them out of you, one way or another.” She spoke in a husky, low voice.

Their waiter brought the tea they’d ordered. Obviously Sam wanted to sober her. “You order for me,” she told Sam.

When the waiter left, she slipped closer to Sam in the booth. Then she put her hand on his thigh.

“I will not reveal my secrets, my fair lady. No matter how much you torture me.”

She raised her eyes and looked into his. “I have my ways. You will be like putty in my hands.”

“I hope not. If I’m not hard as a rock, we won’t get far.”

Tea spewed out of Sylvia’s mouth from the swallow she had just taken. “No fair trying to choke me on my drink.” She wiped her mouth, and they both laughed.

“I can’t wait to get you back to your place.”

“Ditto. I will torture you until you beg for mercy.”

When their meal came, they ate quickly. “This is good food. I was starved.” Sylvia took a sip of her tea. “My head feels better. You are my hero. You arrived in time to save me from a terrible hangover in the morning.”

“I thought you didn’t drink much.”

“Not usually, but after talking with the doctor I needed something to block my thoughts.”

  “Did it work?”

“No.” She told him what Dr. Rhodes had said.

“Honey, did you see the glances you got when you arrived here? The waiters and the maître d’ were staring at your beauty. That red dress clings to every curve and the color makes your skin look like rich cream. When you dropped the light wrap from around your head and face, the waiter showed no reaction other than sincere admiration. I’m so proud to be the man escorting you.”

“Where did you come from? I’ve never known a man like you. You’re full of the right words to say. You are kind and steady like a rock. I can’t believe you won’t change tomorrow or in a year.”

“Sometime in your life you have to trust a man. Or you’ll end up all alone. Is that what you want?”

The waiter arrived with her dessert before she spoke. “Madam, your chocolate blizzard.” He set the plate with a flourish in front of her. The cake was covered in pieces of hard, dark chocolate and two scoops of vanilla ice cream, plus raspberry sauce and whipped cream.

“You have to help me eat this. The plate is dinner size and full.”

“I can do that. I like chocolate, too.”

Later, standing at the curb, Sam waved down a cab. He helped Sylvia in and gave the address.

On the elevator up to her penthouse, Sam pushed Sylvia against the wall and kissed her. He pulled back. “You taste of wonderful chocolate.”

“It’s probably oozing out of my pores.”

“I’ll check.” Sam kissed her neck and nibbled at her shoulder. “You do taste wonderful.” He leaned down and raised her skirt up around her hips.

His shocked look had Sylvia laughing. “I’ve been waiting to see that expression.”

“Damn, if I’d known you didn’t have panties on, I’d have rushed you home much sooner. You’re the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen.” He unzipped his pants and freed his cock. “Are you using birth control?”

“Yes. And I trust you’re safe.”

“Good, because I can’t wait a second more.” He lifted her legs and she put her arms around his neck. Then he positioned his dick at her opening and in one long slide, he was in her pussy.

He gave her a thorough kiss while his cock throbbed inside her and stretched her pussy walls to their limit. She clenched his cock tight, and a shiver of delicious joy spread throughout her body. She’d come home and was safe in his arms.

The thought made her catch her breath. Where did that come from? But it was true. She stared into Sam’s golden-brown eyes. His pupils were dilated, and his eyes smoldered with desire. Her breath caught in her throat as he leaned forward and gently kissed her.

Then he began to go in and out, sending sizzling heat rushing through her veins. He kissed the side of her neck, and he groaned as she clenched and unclenched her pussy walls around his big cock.

He’d enclosed her body between the cool elevator wall and his muscled warmth. It’s like I’ve been caught between my cold, unemotional past and the warm future Sam keeps offering me. I’ve been proud of facing danger and not being afraid, and yet my fear of loving has had me pushing awa
y the best person to come into my life.

Sam looked into her eyes. “I lost you there for a minute.”

“Sorry, but I made a major discovery about myself. I’ll tell you later.”

“I must be losing my touch if you can think of anything but me while I’m making love to you.”

“You’ll just have to work harder.” She winked at him.

“Yes, madam.” He squeezed her buttocks and thrust deep into her pussy. “Pull your top down for me.”

Sylvia pushed the strapless top down to her waist, and Sam immediately kissed her pebbled nipples. A rush of desire went straight to her pussy.

She hugged his neck and moved with him as sheer pleasure ran up her spine. Her body began to vibrate. She threw back her head and yelled out as she clutched Sam’s shoulders and rode the wave of pleasure to the end.

Her pussy rippled around Sam’s cock as he plunged in faster and faster until he yelled out his satisfaction. He held his cock tight inside her as their bodies shuddered against each other.

Later, after they’d showered, Sam pulled on a pair of jeans from his suitcase. He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of Chablis. He poured two glasses and brought them into the bedroom. Sylvia had put on her white robe and slippers.

“I was coming to join you. Shall we sit out on the balcony?”

He handed her the wine. “In just a minute. First, I have a question to ask.” He opened his bag and came back with a small box in his hand. “Sit.”

Sylvia sat on the side of the bed.

“I bought this when I got to town. Would you please make me the happiest man and marry me?” He opened the ring box, but she stared only at him.

“I love you, Sam. Yes, I will marry you.”

For a second the words didn’t sink in. He’d been afraid of another refusal. “You will?”

She laughed and threw her arms around his neck. “I said yes. I will, I will.”

Sam grabbed her in his arms and whirled her around the room. “I can’t believe it. I thought sure you’d make me suffer longer.”

“If you want me to, I will.”

“No, absolutely not.” He sat on the bed with her on his lap and looked around for the ring box. “There it is. I dropped it in my excitement.”

When he opened the box, Sylvia gasped. “It’s beautiful.”

“If you’d rather have a diamond in the center I can have it changed, but the emerald is the same color as your eyes.”

“Don’t you dare take it away.” She slipped it on her finger. “It fits perfect.”

“I called Gina. She gave me your ring size.”

“The two rows of diamonds around the emerald really make the whole ring sparkle. It’s just perfect.”

She looked up at him. “I don’t suppose we can elope?”

“We can, but my family would be hurt. Are you afraid your mother will spoil it for you? Don’t worry, I’ll handle her. But if you really want to elope, we will. You’re the bride, and you get your choice of weddings.”

“No, you’re right. I’m going to be part of your family. We can’t slight them by not having them there when we get married.”

“Thank you, honey.” He kissed her nose. “To the most beautiful bride in the world.” He raised his glass to her.

“That’s going a little overboard. I’d have been pleased with the most beautiful one in the country.” She touched her glass to his and took a sip. Then she put his and her glass to the side.

“I know the perfect way to celebrate.” She got up and pushed him down on the bed. She unzipped his jeans and pulled them off of him. While he scooted up on the bed, she slowly untied the belt to her robe and let it slither down her back.

“I love your idea,” Sam said. “Come here, darlin’, and let your cowboy make love to you.”

“How about I start and you finish?” She straddled his legs and ran her hands across his hard six-pack. When she curled her hand around his cock, he took a deep breath.

“As I said, I like your ideas.”

Sylvia licked across his crown. Then she ran her tongue down the sides of his large cock and along the ridge on the underside.

She stared into his loving eyes before taking him in her mouth as deep as she could. When he groaned, it gave her immense satisfaction knowing she gave him such pleasure. Sylvia cupped his sac and gently moved his balls. Then she went up and down along his cock, tasting, licking, and sucking. Sam’s fingers gripped her head.

“Honey.” He gasped out the word. “If you want any satisfaction, you’d better stop and let me have my turn at pleasuring you.”

“This time is all for you, cowboy.” She went down several more times, and then as she got toward the top of his cock, she sucked. His body bowed, and he yelled out as she tasted his release.

Sam pulled her up into his arms. He held her close and kissed the top of her head. She loved having her ear against his chest and listening to the rapid beat of his heart. She realized she’d be able to hold him, love him, and be by his side for all their years. Where once, just days ago, it would have frightened her, today it gave her a feeling of love and warmth, and the realization of how lucky she had been to find him.

He tipped her head up. “What are you thinking?” She told him about how she had come to love him in spite of her trying not to.

She scooted up in bed and leaned against the headboard. “We do need to discuss a few issues. Just to clear the air.”

“Honey, with your beautiful breasts exposed I can’t think of anything but loving you. I think we’d better adjourn, temporarily, to your balcony.” He swung his legs to the side and grabbed his jeans, pulling them on. “I’ll bring the glasses. See you there.”

Sylvia admired his backside as he walked out. She’d hurry and dress. Hopefully, he’d agree to this idea of hers.

  Chapter Fifteen

Sam sipped his wine and watched the traffic below. The cars looked like toys from up here. He heard her step before he saw her. She’d put on a green blouse and jeans. Her long brown hair was tied back with a scarf. His chest swelled with the joy of knowing soon she’d be his wife. He handed her her glass of wine as she sat beside him.

“I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.”

“No, I’ve enjoyed watching the scenery. It’s different than the ranch, but I like it.”

“Your comment sort of leads into what I wanted to say. There will be times when I’ll want to come to the city for short visits. In New York, I love the shopping and theatre and here I like to be around the hub of the city. I know enough people that I can get into luncheons and parties and hear the latest gossip.”

Sam put his head back and stared at her. “I never thought you would like gossip.”

“Not a lot, but I like to know what’s really going on around here.”

“And I suppose you’ll want to continue working with Grady.”

“Definitely. I like the sheriff, and it’s an interesting job.”

“It can be dangerous at times.” Sam frowned. She reached out and rubbed her finger across his forehead.

“You have to trust in my abilities, as I do in yours. But I promise, once I’m pregnant I’ll work part-time in the office and won’t go back full-time until our children are in school.”

“You’re agreeing we’ll have children, more than one?”

She got out of her chair and sat in his lap to cuddle against him. “Two, and I hope they both look like you.”

“No way. I want a little girl with your green eyes.”

“She’ll probably give you a hard time.”

“It’s all right. Her mother has taught me how to handle her.”

“Really?” Sylvia cocked an eyebrow at him.

“Yes, give her lots of love and a loose rein, but keep tight hold of the end of it.”

She threw her head back and laughed. “Did I tell you I love you, Mr. Samuel Brodie?”

  “I think so.
But tell me again.”

  * * * *

“I’m nervous about your mom’s reaction.” Sylvia stared at the Brodie homestead as they got closer.

Sam patted her leg. “She’ll love you. Her only concern was my getting hurt.”

“She won’t believe I’ll stay around. She will be watching me for years waiting to see me leave.”

He parked the car and turned to her. “Stop, honey. Mom isn’t like that. You’ll see. She will believe what you tell her.”

Sylvia took a deep breath. “All right, let’s go in.”

Mrs. Brodie must have heard the car. She opened the door and came out on the steps as they made their way to her side.

“You found her.” Mrs. Brodie put out her arms and hugged Sylvia. “I’m so glad.”

“We’re engaged,” Sylvia blurted out. She watched Mrs. Brodie’s face. Her welcoming smile warmed Sylvia.

“Welcome to our family. Now I’ll have another daughter-in-law and hopefully more grandchildren.”

Sam leaned toward Sylvia. “She mainly wants us to marry so she can spoil our children.”

“You may be right. Come on in. Tell me your plans.”

“We prefer a small wedding,” Sylvia said.

“Most of the weddings have been small and have taken place here at the homestead. Would you like to have it here, or maybe you’d prefer another location.”

  “Here would be great.”

Sam squeezed her hand. “We want family and a few close friends.”

“I thought perhaps we’d decorate the gazebo with fall flowers, have the wedding there, and the reception here in the house. But that’s just a suggestion.” Mrs. Brodie motioned for them to join her in the kitchen. “I’ll pour coffee and cut us a piece of my pumpkin coffee cake. Then we’ll write down whatever you want.”

After he’d eaten, Sam excused himself. “I’ll agree to whatever you two decide. I want to check with my foreman and see how the ranch is doing.” He glanced at Sylvia.

“I’m fine. Mrs. Brodie and I can take care of the details.” She got up and kissed him. “Now go. I know you’ve been anxious to get back to work since we arrived.”
