by Rawlings, Rachel

“I still don’t see why we had to burn the whole grimoire.” Jared stomped out the last of the embers. There was nothing left of my family’s spells but ash.

“Everything worth putting down on paper is right here.” I assured him, tapping my right temple. “I’m sure I can find a journal or something that I like at Cauldron Crafts. I know the owner so I get a discount.”

One corner of his mouth upturned in a wry smile. “Oh, I’m sure I’ll have something to your liking.”

“You had to go and make it awkward.” Pru elbowed Jared in the ribs before linking her arm through mine. “I guess it’s time.”

“How much do you think an Uber would cost from here to the Heights? My treat.” I walked away from my ancestral home with my sister on one arm and Jared on the other.

Seeing Barbara Harris again ranked somewhere around root canal with no Novocain. I was in no hurry for either. But I survived a crazy witch hell bent on killing me, rescued my sister, and learned a little about myself and my family in the process – I could survive my former foster mother.

  Maybe.

“I HAD ANOTHER DREAM.” Pru padded barefoot into the kitchen and stole my cup of coffee.

“That’s considered an act of war in some countries.” I said as I got up to pour myself another cup. “Was I in the dream?”

“No.” She smiled over the rim of the mug. “But he was. Come on, Ellie. You know you want to know. His intentions are good.”

From her teasing tone, I knew she meant Jared. The fact that my sister dreamt of a possible, sort of maybe romantic interest of mine would have been unnerving if she wasn’t a dreamwalker.

Actually, that made it more unnerving.

“You know what Mark Twain said about good intentions.” I took a sip of my coffee. “The road to Hell is paved with them.”

I fought the temptation to ask for details. Sometimes it’s better not to know.

Besides, the last time I asked, I regretted it. The images were seared into my brain and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t scrub them out. The dream involved a young boy, a necromancer if her description was accurate, who killed things so he could bring them back to life. He was alone, came into his powers without anyone to help him and developed a taste for death. If he stayed on his current path, he’d evolve into something dark, something more frightening and dangerous than Helene.

Prudence wanted to help him. I wanted to help Pru unlock her full potential. Neither of us were ready to play the hero.

In place of capes and matching jumpsuits, we each had a journal. Pru wrote down her dreams and I wrote down my family’s spells – the ones safe for prying eyes should it end up outside of my possession. For the foreseeable future that would have to do.

Maybe one day we could pursue her dream of using her abilities to help others. But sometimes you have to save yourself before you can save someone else.

  Self-care, right?

Less than a month had passed since we almost died at the hands of the psychotic, magic hungry witch who happened to be my cousin. Prudence stood up to Barbara, declared her independence, and moved in with me. They’d yet to cancel her allowance which was helpful because the James family home needed a lot of work.

The broken windows were boarded up and shards of glass swept away. The doors hung crooked on the hinges and the floorboards creaked where the foundation sagged but it was home – and it was ours. We had a roof over our heads and the privacy to discover who and what we truly are.

  A witch and a dreamwalker.
