The A.R.EX. Origin Page 17

He had Janiece and Jason over for dinner. He had a special surprise for the both of them that he wanted to reveal for a couple of days now. After the meal, he sat them down on his sofa to reveal his secret.

“Okay, you know how I’ve always wanted to get a stable job? Well, I’ve decided to go into law enforcement I’m going to train in order to become a full-fledged member of the NYPD.”

“Really that’s incredible news,” said Janiece.

“There’s more,” said Arex, “I’ve made a decision that I hope the both of you will approve of. I…oh boy. ?You guys might be surprised and I don’t know how you’re going to react, but I want to adopt Jason.”

Both humans were taken aback by that request.

“You want to adopt Jason? I thought you just wanted to be friends with him.”

“I know, but I was thinking… we spend so much time together, the three of us, so I think it’s only fitting that we become a family. That’s why I’m going to get another job. I decided to work in construction starting next week. I want to be able to do my fair share for you guys. What do you say?”

Janiece looked at Jason, the latter arching up his eyebrows. Arex tried to guess what they were both thinking. Finally, Jason shrugged.

  “Okay, sure. That’ll be cool.”

“Are you sure about that? I’ve put a lot of thought into it. This isn’t a decision one can make lightly.”

“No, I’m serious. Dude, I’m really okay with that. You guys are made for each other, and I think it’s about time you guys got together. Can I still call you Arex instead of dad?”

  Arex chuckled.

“No problem there. What about you, Janiece?”

He and Jason looked at her intently while she thought about it.

“Alright,” she said finally, “but I don’t want you thinking about us having another child. I think one is enough.”

“Agreed. So, when do we tell the whole world?”

“Let them figure it out. It’s none of their business anyway.”

They laughed. They realized that it wasn’t going to be easy to adjust to their new life together, but they had been practicing for the last few years, so they knew they were ready to finally be a family.
