  Chapter One

Kitt Maxwell opened the door to an insistent pounding and a man fell into her arms. Looking down at a shaved head lodged between her breasts, her heart pounded wildly. An escaped convict? A murderer? Or maybe a rapist. She’d come to Summerville in search of a criminal but hadn’t expected one to come looking for her.

The guy hung onto the doorframe supporting part of his weight but made no effort to move his nose from the middle of her cleavage. In fact, if she wasn’t mistaken, the bum was burrowing a little deeper. He could easily turn his head and by raising it just the slightest bit latch onto one of her nipples. Her pulse quickened and perspiration beaded its way between her breasts. Could he feel it through the thin cloth of her blouse? Would he think she was hot for him if he did?

“Thanks for the soft landing,” he said, chuckling.

That clinched it. He was incarcerated for a sex crime. Most likely rape. And she might be next. “You pervert,” she sputtered. Pulse racing, she shoved the heels of her hands into his chest and he slid to the ground.

“Whoops,” he said, grinning up at her. “I think I might have had one teensy whisky too many.”

  “One…?”

He flashed twin dimples and she caught a glint of gold from a front tooth.

“Oh my God.” Heat flooded Kitt’s body and she clasped a hand to the spot where his face had recently rested. “Rob? Rob Harrison?”

His chuckle trailed off into a faint snore. Of course it was him, but she didn’t expect an answer since her one-time heartthrob was passed out on the threshold. One-time heartthrob? Who was she kidding? She’d been mad for him but he wouldn’t give her what she wanted. No one would believe her if she said Rob refused to take her cherry. But he had refused, after she’d done everything she could to make him lust after her body.

She leant forward and touched his bare head. What happened to his thick, blond hair? She loved the way it waved so tightly it felt crisp to her touch. Had he just been released from prison? Or worse, escaped? Kitt’s heart pounded and she again pressed a hand to her chest. Feeling faint, she leaned close and shouted, “Rob? Why is your head shaved?” She shook him by his shoulder. “Answer me.”

He didn’t even blink. The lower half of his body lay on the front porch, the upper part in the entryway, and he reeked of liquor. One whisky too many, indeed. One bottle, maybe. But then he hadn’t said ‘one drink’.

She stood, hands on hips, and pushed the toe of her sneaker into his ribs. He rolled over onto his side. Grinning, he blinked and his eyes lolled shut again. He wasn’t a heavy drinker as far as she knew, so why had he tied one on tonight?

She shouldn’t even try to figure it out. Nothing Rob Harrison did should surprise her, and yet, it always did. The real shock this time was that he’d shown up at Aunt Sugar’s the day after Kitt arrived for a visit. She hadn’t seen him in twelve years and had almost given up hope she ever would again. She shouldn’t want to, but she couldn’t forget Rob and the way he made her feel.

Now, here he was, close enough to touch. If he were awake and sober, she’d gladly lay down beside him. Better yet, she’d throw herself on top of him, her body against his. She used to press against him to feel his hard-on when they stood close to one another but as much as she aroused him, he’d always resisted her.

Rob Harrison was the thorn in Kitt’s side, the nightmare that woke her, and the love song that made her cry.

“Who’s that, Kitt?” her aunt called from the den where she was stretched out on the daybed, per Kitt’s instructions to rest.

Outside, a huge moon lit the sky. Shining through the open door, it cast gentle fingers of light across Rob’s wonderful face. Recalling the brilliant blue of his eyes, she wished he’d open them wide, but when he did, they’d have to talk and she didn’t know what she’d say. Nor what he’d have to tell her.

“Rob?” she said, gently. Damn, he was sexy, even in this sad state.

She’d always believed he was a good person inside but what if she’d been wrong? What if he was on the lam, either from the law or another woman he’d put under his spell? There had always been girls chasing him in high school and she was sure he’d left a trail of beautiful, heartbroken women wherever he’d been since.

Kitt ran her eyes over him. Broad shoulders, bulging abs, narrow hips. She fastened her gaze on the fly of his pants and wished she could see what lay beneath it. She’d longed to see him naked but the most he’d ever exposed to her was his muscled chest with a sprinkling of blond hair. She’d touched that soft mat but he’d always brushed away her hand before she could rub his nipples the way she intended.

Rob was tanned and she suspected he’d spent a lot of time outdoors. Doing what? she wondered. Riding horses, or playing them? He’d once wanted to join the rodeo circuit. But Rob wanted to do a lot of things, all of them play-related. When she’d said none of them involved work or counted as a real job, he laughed and told her if that’s what she thought, he might as well become a gigolo. It wouldn’t surprise her if he had.

“Good luck in finding a woman who’ll support you,” she’d said, but her sarcasm fell flat because they both knew he could find a dozen with a wink of an eye or a snap of his fingers. Or one of those devil-may-care dimpled grins that always made Kitt go weak inside.

Thick, sun-tipped lashes fringed his eyes and she remembered his sexy wink, but there was something new—fine lines radiated from their corners. Had he actually worried about something? He was thirty now, the same
as her, but thirty was young.

“Are you going to let the man lie there all night, Kitt?” Sugar snapped from her sitting room doorway.

“You’re supposed to be lying down,” Kitt said, taking in her aunt’s appearance and hoping she looked that good when she was supposedly half-dead.

Silver-streaked black hair emanated from a widow’s peak and curled softly to the tips of her ears. At sixty-seven, she was still slim and her grey, oval-shaped eyes remained bright. Lines gently crossed her cheeks, but she looked like an aging seductress in her gold-embroidered, red satin robe.

“Is that who I think it is?” She edged closer and looked down at Rob.

Before Kitt could assure her it was, he opened one eye and gave her aunt that impudent grin of his. “How ya doin’, Toots?”

  “Don’t ‘Toots’ me,” she huffed.

Christened Carolina, a name she hated, she was nicknamed Sugar because she was such a sweet child, but Kitt’s mother said she’d tried to disprove it since puberty by acting like a crab with cramps. Maybe that was the reason she was Kitt’s favourite relative. Perhaps she was drawn to unorthodox characters because she was their antithesis, or it might be that she was envious. Kitt would like to be as freewheeling but she’d always fallen short.

“He didn’t have that gold on his tooth before,” Sugar said, peering closer.

“It probably got chipped in a barroom fight,” Kitt said.

“You were always a good guesser, uh…” Rob’s eyes flicked shut again.

“If he’s forgotten my name, I’ll castrate him,” Kitt threatened, as she tried to decide whether to push him out the door or pull him in.

“And do the women of this world a disservice?” Sug chuckled. “I’m sure he remembers everything about you, Kitt. He’s an impudent young man, but he’s not dumb and he’s cute as a tick on a pup’s tail. Can you drag him inside?”

Her aunt was assessing her body build. Not waiting for the verdict, Kitt pulled on Rob’s feet. He couldn’t be an escaped convict. He was a flirt and a bounder, but he wasn’t a criminal. So she wouldn’t be aiding and abetting.

And it was easier to pull than push.

A shoe promptly came off and she took his ankles. She was short and when she’d put on the freshman fifteen in college, she looked like a Sumo wrestler so she’d joined the volleyball team to lose weight, and had gained strength as well as recovering her figure. Those muscles came in handy when fending off guys, but this was the first time she’d used them to drag one into the house.

When Rob’s head reached the threshold she stopped pulling and supported it while standing over his body and pushing his shoulders.

As she stood gasping over him, she thought she detected a grin on his face. “If you’re awake and…”

“I’m not. I swear.” He pulled a sober face and lay very still.

She looked up and saw Sugar holding a hand over her mouth, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

“You! You bas…” Kitt nudged him hard with the toe of her shoe.

He grinned and opened his eyes. “Never wear a short skirt when standing over a skank.”

She nudged him harder and he laughed out loud.

  “Too bad you’re wearing panties.”

“You haven’t changed an iota, Rob Harrison.”

“You wouldn’t have it any other way, would you, sweetheart?”

Infuriated because he was half right, Kitt stalked off leaving her aunt to deal with Rob. Slamming her bedroom door behind her, she locked it. Tapping a finger against her chin, she then unlocked it. Locked it again. Unlocked. Locked. What was she thinking? Did she actually want him sneaking in the way he used to? Of course, that was in the house where she lived with her parents, and he’d come through the window, taking his life in his hands. Kitt’s father would have killed him if he’d known, and she’d have been grounded into the next century.

She wasn’t stupid. Everything about Rob was wrong for her and she knew it. When they were still in high school, he was the bad boy in town. The cute guy from the wrong side of the tracks who charmed every girl who came near him out of her pants. He was fun, he was wild, and charm oozed from his pores.

None of the girls cared that his dad was a lazy oaf who picked through people’s trash and littered his family’s yard with junk, or that Rob’s mother worked in ‘housekeeping’ at the town’s sleaziest motel. The high school heartthrob was a sex magnet and all the slutty females wanted to score with him and brag about it afterward. Their stories were so outrageous, Kitt didn’t believe half of what she heard. And whether it was his background or his prowess that made him off-limits, her stiff-backboned professor father and hoity-toity social climber mother were adamant she stay as far away from “that Harrison boy” as possible.

Aunt Sug liked him and said it was no wonder he was the way he was. God gave him good looks and charm, and that was all he had in this world, so he’d learned to use his assets, and you couldn’t fault him for that. Kitt supposed she was right, but she harboured a giant crush and was insanely jealous. No one, unless it was her aunt, would have suspected that of her. Kitt was such a goody-goody. Everyone who knew her probably thought she was a virgin. Who would have guessed she desperately wanted Rob of ill fame to fuck her?

Her pussy ached for him now. Dammit. Why couldn’t she sleep instead of thinking? Just because the sexiest guy on this earth was lying in the next room was no reason to toss and turn for—she checked the clock on the nightstand—one-and-a-half hours. He was probably still passed out, but what if he’d awakened and sneaked out? Fear gripped her.

She wanted him to still be there in the morning but what would she say to him if he was? If he had left, would she ever see him again?

  She sat up in bed.

He might not have closed the front door and he certainly wouldn’t think to lock it. She’d better check.

Tiptoeing to the bedroom door which she seemed to have left unlocked after the bait and switch thing, she eased it open and…he was no longer lying on the moon-washed floor. Alarmed, she padded barefoot into the room. Had he left without any conversation whatsoever? She couldn’t bear it if she never got to see him again.

“Kitten.” A husky whisper laced with laughter emanated from the sofa.

Rob was still there and half-undressed. He’d taken off his t-shirt, exposing his muscled chest. Moonlight coming through the window danced on the golden hairs, mesmerising her until she saw that he’d unsnapped the top of his jeans, laying them open slightly. The room was warm and rapidly growing warmer. Averting her eyes from that shadowed area with great difficulty, she saw he was still wearing one canvas shoe with a telltale logo—a well-known brand.

In high school, Rob’s sneakers had been generic and worn. His jeans, more faded than was considered stylish. His pocket tshirts, too tight, and the kind that men wore to work in factories. But every time she looked at him, her insides curled and she felt an unfamiliar longing clear to her toes.

Rob had introduced Kitt to lust, and tonight the feeling had returned, scalding hot and familiar.

He chuckled as if reading her mind and, rolling to his side, patted the couch beside him. “Lie down here and tell me what you’re thinking.”

That was exactly what she’d longed to do earlier, stretch out beside him, but she didn’t want to talk then and she still didn’t now. She wanted so much more, but it would be foolish when she didn’t know what he was up to. She was a grown woman with at least a little sense—even when it came to Rob. Aware that she was wearing only a thin sleep shirt with nothing under it, she sat gingerly on the end by his feet.

“Come on, baby. Afraid of me?”

“Why should I be?” She straightened her shoulders and folded her hands on her knees.

  “You shouldn’t. That’s the point.”

“I didn’t know you were in town,” she said, primly.

  “Toots didn’t tell you?”

  “My aunt knew?”

  “Rob Harrison retu
rns to Summerville and everyone knows. I’ve always been the talk of the town, as if you didn’t know that.”

He gave Kitt that killer grin and she grew mushy inside. “How did you find out I was here?” she asked.

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he propped his head up with his elbow and ran his gaze over her slowly, making her squirm. Desire twitched the lips of her pussy and her nipples strained at the delicate cloth of her nightshirt. Was the moonlight spilling into the room bright enough for him to see the hard peaks?

“I ran into her at the supermarket and she said she was expecting you.”

Sug didn’t know I was coming. Unless…she set me up. Good little Kitt will come running if she hears I’m dying of cancer. Would she do that?

Rob sat up to pull off his other shoe.

No. She wouldn’t stoop to that level. So, that means she is seriously ill.

Rob lay down again, tucking his bare feet behind Kitt and thoughts gave way to emotions. His body heat created that familiar curling-inside feeling. She suppressed a shiver. Dammit. Why did he have to come back? She’d almost forgotten him.

That was so not true. She twisted the pearl pinkie ring that Lionel gave her. She’d gotten over Rob, almost maybe, but he was unforgettable.

“Today, I spotted a car out front that I thought must be yours and I was going to stop but lost my nerve.”

She dropped her jaw. “Rob Harrison lost his nerve? That’s hard to believe.”

He grinned and wiggled his toes against her bottom. “I stopped by a pub this evening and ran into an old friend and after a few drinks I found it again.”

He had to get sloshed so he could come see me? “An old girlfriend?”

  “Jealous?”

“Of course not. How could I be jealous of a man I haven’t seen in twelve years?”

“Have you counted the days as well?”

If he weren’t acting so obnoxious, she’d have thrown herself on top of him. His squirming toes were accomplishing exactly what he’d intended, and Kitt’s breath was coming short. He’d managed to edge one foot underneath her and was working forward. She knew where he was headed and the wave of excitement wending through her built. She should stop him but she wanted whatever he intended to offer. She’d prefer his cock but would welcome any part of Rob inside her longing vagina.
