Kris gave her a soft loving kiss on the lips and nestled down beside her. Kris draped her leg across Jenna’s. Jenna rolled her over onto her back. “We’re not done yet.”

She kissed down Kris’s stomach and pulled the waistband of her shorts down just an inch to kiss the newly exposed skin. She licked the spot she had just kissed as she curved her fingers along the band hugging Kris’s hips. Kris raised her hips allowing Jenna to pull the shorts down past her thighs until they were thrown to the side.

Kris grabbed the headboard with both hands as she arched her back. Jenna used her fingers to spread Kris’s soft lips exposing the glistening pearl she was after. She sucked it between her lips feeling it roll inside of her mouth. The tip of her tongue ran wide circles around it occasionally licking upwards with the flat of her tongue. Each time there was direct contact, Kris’s moans became higher and her legs jumped, yet she would push Jenna’s head further into her.

Jenna shoved her tongue inside while her fingers took over where she had left off. Kris’s moans were deeper and more primal now as she rolled and bucked against Jenna’s face. She looked up watching Kris squirm, arch her back, and run her tongue over her lips while uttering incomprehensible pleas. She worked her tongue back up licking and kissing until she found the treasure again, which was no longer hidden beneath the folds. Jenna used her fingers to spread and lift the bundle from its resting place as she moved her lips over it again. Kris lifted her shoulders and head from the bed and cried out before slamming back down to the mattress. Kris’s heels dug into the covers around her.

She knew Kris was in that same spot along the spectrum she visited just a few minutes ago. That fine line between pleasure and pain, paradise and torture with one foot over the ledge and the other one planted firmly on solid ground.

She moved up leaning against the headboard, pulling Kris backwards on top of her. Kris threw her arm up behind Jenna pulling her down for a lustful kiss. She used her calves on the inside of Kris’s legs forcing them further apart while her hand moved hard against Kris. The other hand pinched and rolled a nipple between her fingertips. Kris moved her hips and pelvis in circles against Jenna causing a sore pleasure in Jenna’s clit.

Jenna spread the abundant wetness around with her fingers as Kris licked Jenna’s chin, tasting herself on it. Jenna kissed her, tasting Kris again on her tongue. Kris moaned into her mouth as her lips rested against Jenna’s, too involved in the sensations below to focus on anything else. She used her fingers to rub against Kris, gaining momentum and pressure, increasing with the breaths she felt against her lips. In a few seconds, she felt Kris holding her breath, and she knew it would happen soon. Kris groaned as she sucked in another deep breath that she held before letting it back out with a cry. Jenna dug her heels into the bed, pushed her calves against Kris’s, and thrust her pelvis higher, pushing Kris up as she worked the swollen nub hard and fast beneath her fingers. “Give it to me. Let go,” she breathed into Kris’s ear.

Kris cried out raising her hips higher into the air before going limp and squeezing Jenna’s hand between her thighs not willing to let it go yet. She relaxed into Jenna’s arms with a low giggle. Jenna loved that giggle. She only heard it after one of Kris’s big orgasms. It was a signal of Kris’s satisfaction, something she hoped she would never lose.

Jenna woke up at four forty-five and kissed Kris on the cheek. Her body was programmed to wake up at the same time every morning, even the weekends. She hadn’t used an alarm clock since high school. She used the bathroom and splashed cool water on her face. She was still a little apprehensive about running this morning with Skylar. She just met her yesterday and the whole thing seemed awkward. She always ran by herself except the times when Kris went, but that was more like a slow to medium jog. Besides Kim, she never had a running companion before.

By the time she had left the bathroom, Jax had taken her place in bed snuggled up to Kris. He glanced back at her giving her a look like he had no intentions of moving if she changed her mind. She reached beneath the edge of the bed and grabbed her running shoes.

  “Have fun,” Kris grumbled.

Jenna kissed her and rubbed Jax beneath his chin. “I’ll try, but I can’t guarantee it.”

She opened the front door at five o’clock sharp to find Skylar leaning into a stretch in front of the steps.

“Good morning,” Jenna said as she closed the door behind her.

Skylar looked up and smiled. “You sound a little surprised. Sorry to disappoint you, but no need for a bedroom wake-up call this morning. Actually, I never made it to bed last night anyway.”

Jenna rubbed her palms against her tights. She was already feeling uneasy. She struggled for something to say. “Oh, hot date after dinner last night?”

“Don’t I wish? I stayed up unpacking, but I swear the more boxes I unpacked the more that popped up around me.”

Jenna began stretching. She bent over touching her toes and glanced up to find Skylar mimicking her. She could see her side profile, and she felt a wave of warmth rush over her. Skylar lifted her head and caught her staring. Jenna quickly glanced back down at her toes.

“So, how long have you and Kris been together?”

“I met her two years ago, but we’ve dated for almost a year and a half.” Her cheeks flushed not knowing if that was a loaded question or not.

  “I admit, I’m jealous.”

Jenna waited for her to explain what she was jealous of. Was it their relationship? Was she jealous of Jenna? Jealous of Kris? But, a further explanation never came.

  “So, you ready?” Jenna asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.”

Jenna nodded and sprinted down the sidewalk into the street. Moments later, Skylar fell into stride beside her.

“Do you do this every morning?” Skylar asked.

“Every morning if Kris will let me. She’s been overly protective since my injury last year.”

“I can’t say that I blame her. She told me about that. I saw your picture online. So, you rub elbows with Amelia Davies now?”

Jenna winced thinking back to her last encounter in the hotel room with Amelia. “I wouldn’t say we’re that close.”

“But, you do keep in touch?”

“More like she keeps in touch with me.” Jenna didn’t like discussing Amelia with anyone, let alone someone she just met the day before.

“Still, if I were Kris I would be a little apprehensive about Amelia keeping in touch.”

“Are you ready to kick it up a notch or two?” Jenna asked trying to change the subject.

  “Sure, I’m following your lead.”

Jenna sprinted ahead of Skylar, but upon seeing Skylar catch up to her with little effort, she ran even faster. Again, Skylar appeared at her side. At least they were running too hard and fast to carry on a conversation.

Jenna ran her usual circuit and led them back around slowing down again before reaching the neighborhood. By the time they were in front of Jenna’s house, they had been walking the last few blocks.

“I do believe you understated your exercise routine,” Jenna said.

“No, honestly, I haven’t ran like that in ages. I try to fit in cardio every now and then so I guess that helped me out a little. Trust me, I may be so sore you might not see me for a week.”

“So, if you don’t show up tomorrow I shouldn’t show up in your bedroom for a wake-up call?” Jenna bit the inside of her cheek realizing what that must’ve sounded like.

“Oh, you can show up in my bedroom, but that doesn’t mean you can get me out of bed.” Skylar winked.

Jenna smiled, but she felt uncomfortable. Were they flirting with each other? Maybe it was just friendly banter. “Don’t feel obligated to join me if you’d rather stick to your cardio.”

“No, I enjoyed this morning. I’m just not sure if my body enjoyed it as much.”

“You had no problem keeping up with me this morning. Do you want to come in for breakfas
t or coffee?”

“Thanks, but I’ll have to take a raincheck. I need to get ready for work. I’m meeting the senior partner at the firm today.”

“Good luck. I’ll see you tomorrow, maybe,” Jenna said with a sly smile.

“Ha ha. Thanks, I’ll try.” Skylar gave her a little wave and turned.

Jenna remained in the same spot watching as Skylar walked the few houses down to her own house. Right before Skylar turned onto her sidewalk, she looked back catching Jenna watching her. She waved at Jenna again, and Jenna gave her a small wave back. She cursed herself for staring and for getting caught doing it.

  Chapter Six

Kris was the last to arrive at Allie and Danni’s house. Erin and Liz were already there, and Jay had canceled again. Since the pregnancy, he has been glued to Cynthia’s side.

“You didn’t bring Jenna?” Allie asked.

“No, she’s working tonight, so I brought Skylar instead.” Kris took the beer Allie handed her. She introduced Skylar to everyone. It was the first time she had spent any time with her without Jenna around. A twinge of jealousy had weaved its way into her consciousness, and she wanted to get a better feel for Skylar.

“So, you’re the infamous Skylar who has braved Jenna’s rigorous running routine?” Allie asked.

Skylar raised her beer in the air. “Yes, guilty as charged. That would be me.”

“How does that make you feel, Kris?” Allie asked. “I’m not sure I would trust Danni alone around someone who liked Skylar.”

“I’m not sure how to interpret that,” Danni said turning towards Allie.

“I’m not sure how to take that either, but I choose to take it as a compliment.” Skylar said raising an inquisitive eyebrow. She looked at Allie and then at Kris who was sitting beside her on the couch.

Liz grabbed Erin’s hand. “I think we’ll stay out of this one.”

Kris shot Allie the evil eye. “I trust Jenna.”

“Guys, I’m sitting right here. I can hear you,” Skylar said.

“I didn’t mean I don’t trust you. I’m just saying that I trust Jenna around anyone, even someone as beautiful as you.”

“Once again, I’ll take that as a compliment. Thank you, Kris.”

“How is Jenna getting along with the new Director of Nursing?” Danni asked.

Kris shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t know the other one left.”

“Yes, the previous one retired a few months ago. They have a new one now. I’ve heard she is giving all the doctors and nurses hell. She’s changing all the policies and inventing new ones to be more efficient, she says.”

“Really? Jenna hasn’t mentioned it to me.”

Danni rubbed her forehead. “What is her name? Her name has escaped me at the moment.”

“Ruby Titmus, aka Cap, short for Captain Ruby Tits.” Skylar laughed.

Everyone turned to Skylar. Liz squeezed Erin’s hand. Allie had paused midway inches away from sipping her beer. Danni nudged Allie to put the beer down.

Kris swallowed hard. She felt like an outcast for not knowing about Cap. She looked around the room. Everyone was now staring at her, waiting for her reaction. Her cheeks blushed, and her hand tightened around her beer. “So, she mentioned her to you?”

“Yes, a few weeks ago while we were cooling down after a run. She said Cap was a thorn in her side. She was one of the ones gunning for Jenna to lose her job.”

Kris’s jaw tightened, and she had to release the bottle before she shattered it in her hand. She lightened her grip and rested it on her thigh. She still felt everyone’s eyes on her.

“I guess that’s why she hasn’t told me about her. We don’t talk about anything to do with what happened.” She took a nervous sip hoping that was the reason Jenna hadn’t mentioned it before.

She tuned everyone out as they started grilling Skylar about where she was from and why she moved. After what Kris considered a comfortable amount of time, she finished the rest of her beer and headed to the kitchen for another one.

She sat the empty bottle down on the counter and pulled her phone out of her pocket. She wanted to call Jenna and ask her why she told Skylar about Cap and not her.

  “What was that about?”

Kris turned to find Allie in the middle of the kitchen. “I don’t know.”

“Well, you looked like something bothered you. Are you upset that Jenna has a new friend?”

“No, I’m happy she has someone to talk to. Hell, I’m the one that pushed the two of them together.”

“From the look on your face right now, that’s a decision you’re regretting.”

“I like Skylar. I do, but I mean, come on you’ve seen her. Should I be jealous?”

Allie looked back over her shoulder and moved closer to Kris. “Which part makes you more jealous? The fact that she’s drop-dead gorgeous or the fact that Jenna is telling her things that she’s not telling you?”

  “Both.”

“Do you honestly trust Jenna and love her?”

  “Yes.”

“Then, you’re going to have to accept Skylar as part of her life now. At least she’s talking to someone. Danni tried, but she wouldn’t open up to her.”

“I know. Can you believe I’m this jealous already and we’re not even married yet?”

Allie put her arm around Kris and leaned her head against Kris’s. “You know, next time you might want to pick someone,” she pinched her thumb and forefinger together, “just a tad less attractive to be Jenna’s friend.”

  ***

Jenna arrived home about an hour after Kris had returned from Allie and Danni’s house. She slumped down in the chair and started going through the mail lying on the coffee table.

“How was work?” Kris asked coming in from the kitchen.

  “It was okay.”

“Did Cap give you any trouble tonight?”

Jenna looked up from the mail at Kris and then back down. “What are you talking about?”

“Isn’t that what you call the new Director of Nursing, or do you refer to her by her full name of Captain Ruby Tits?”

“Kris, you sound like you’re trying to start an argument. Could we please not fight tonight? I’m so tired.”

“Funny how you’re tired whenever I try to bring up anything serious, but you’re a bundle of energy around Skylar.”

Jenna threw the mail back down on the table and sat back kicking her shoes off. “Of course I have energy, we’re running.”

“Not always. You’ve had lunch with her a few times, and I know she sends you texts.”

“The few times we’ve had lunch, you were working the weekend. The texts are usually about the weather or something funny. Where is this coming from all the sudden?”

“She knew about Cap and I didn’t. Danni asked me about her, and I didn’t know what she was talking about…but Skylar sure did.”

  Jenna looked away from Kris.

“Do you know how that made me feel? Do you know how embarrassing that was in front of my friends?”

“I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry, Kris. You’re the one who forced me into this situation, remember?”

Kris sat on the couch. “I wanted you to have a friend, someone to talk to. I didn’t want you to shut me out. Why didn’t you tell me the new director tried to keep you from returning to the hospital?”

“Because any time I bring up anything remotely involving Kim, you lose it. Sometimes you cry, sometimes you yell, sometimes you shut me out. I never know what to expect, but I do know it ends in me apologizing to you for bringing it up in the first place.”

“You don’t think I have a right to feel the way I do? I’m the one who allowed your sister to stay here, a complete stranger to me. I’m the one she tried to sleep with. I’m the one who still has nightmares because she pulled a gun on me and tried to kill me.”

“And you’re the one who killed my sister.”

  The words hung in t
he air between them. Those nine little syllables had been held back for months. She knew Jenna had kept them under lock and key, pushed down into the depths of her consciousness. Jenna had never said them out loud to her, but now that they had broken free from their chains they could never be taken back, ever.

Forever, she would remember those words she had said to her. With one breath and just a few fleeting moments in time, Jenna had struck an emotional blow so precise to her heart that it hurt more than any pain Kim had caused her. She looked at Jenna whose eyes were full of tears, unblinking. Her face was full of shock and horror with anger surfacing around the edges. It was in the way her eyes narrowed and her jaw clenched. There was also remorse evident in her trembling lips and quivering chin.

She didn’t know whether to be angry or run over and console her lover, her friend, her fiancee. Instead, she dug her nails into her jeans trying to ground herself while she waited for Jenna to say something. Her heart beat in her ears like the ticking of a clock counting the passing seconds, only twice as fast. She waited for an apology, an explanation, a rational reason for saying something so awful but Jenna stared back at her without speaking.

“Jenna, I’m sorry that I took your sister from you. Do you really think I’m some evil monster that doesn’t think about that day and what it did to you? To me? To us?”

Jenna looked down at the floor as a tear made its way down her cheek.

“You may have only said those words out loud today, but they’ve been written on your face for months. After the excitement of the proposal wore off, your happiness was replaced by sadness.”

Jenna wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. Her right foot shook up and down like it always did when she was nervous or upset.

“I know I’m the one responsible for the turmoil that has been eating you up inside. I knew we were going to have to talk about it someday, but part of me hoped time would make it a little easier. But time will never bring Kim back. Every time I look at you I can see how much you are suffering, and I did that to you.”

Jenna cleared her throat and placed her hand over her heart. “I know I shouldn’t blame you, and I know you’re not responsible at all. I know she tried to kill us both and Allie and Stan. I have no explanation for how I feel. The closest thing I’ve come to figuring out the way I feel is that you’re here and she’s not. It’s just that simple and it hurts.”
