“Sorry about that,” Mitch said, not bothering to point out that Jake had gotten a few good licks of his own in.
“Hey, you were worried about your bride.” Jake shrugged. “I would’ve behaved the same way if I’d thought Katie was up there.”
When he was gone, Mitch said, “We need to talk.”
Sasha nodded, and opened her mouth to respond when a sudden burst of water from a misdirected fire hose sent them skidding across the lawn. When they came to a stop, Mitch was lying on top of her. And they were both laughing.
“How come I always end up getting wet when I’m with you?”
“You’re not the only one,” she mused, grinning up at him.
“True.” He tenderly pushed strands of wet hair away from her face and said, “I love you. And I don’t want you to go to Big Sur.”
His heart plummeted as tears flooded into her eyes. “I mean, to live,” he said quickly. “Of course you want to visit your dad. But I want you to stay here with me.”
“Oh, Mitch, I love you, too. And I wasn’t going to leave you. Ever! You’re stuck with me. For better or worse.”
The way she was looking up at him made Mitch feel ten feet tall. He also decided that perhaps it wasn’t so bad being a hero after all As long as he could always be Sasha’s hero.
“I found your house, Sasha. Your dream house. It’s ours if we—you—want it.”
Sasha stared up at him. It was too much. Her father, a husband, her American citizenship, and her dream house. Their dream house, she reminded herself. Hers and Mitch’s. All in one glorious day!
Surely no woman had ever been luckier. Or happier. She laughed as she threw her arms around her husband. “My hero.”
