She kissed him again, moaning when he nibbled on her lips and leaned her back on the floor and straddled her hips.
When he lifted his head, she sighed.
“What?” he asked, his gaze roaming over her sweet face, her juicy, kiss-plumped lips, even her platinum blonde hair that had grown nearly to her shoulders in the last six months. “What’s with the sigh?”
She tipped her head up to look at him, a pretty smile on her luscious lips. “When should we do it?”
He chuckled. “Now you’re in a hurry?”
Her smile turned into a grin.
“So how come you’re ready all of a sudden when just weeks ago you turned me down for the hundredth time?”
“You’ll think I’m silly if I tell you, and I don’t think you’ve asked a hundred times.”
“I already think you’re silly, so you might as well tell me. And it sure as hell feels like a hundred times you’ve said no.”
She pinched his side, and they both laughed.
“Come on. Spill,” he said as he sat back up on his knees, caught her hand, and then kissed her fingertips.
“The gift you gave the uncles last night.”
He frowned. “The fishing trip?”
She nodded.
“I don’t get it.” He rolled off of her and stretched out on the floor next to her.
She leaned up on one elbow and touched her fingers to his cheek. With a soft kiss, she whispered, “You made plans with the uncles for next summer. It means you have every intention of still being around.”
“Are you trying to piss me off?” he asked.
She chuckled. “I love you, Dex. And I always will. Thank you for...being who you are.”
With his lips against hers, he whispered. “I’ll never let you down, sweetheart. Never.”
“I believe you.”
Ruby’s little hands grabbed at his T-shirt as she pulled herself up on her knees and patted his chest.
They both laughed at their little girl. Amber had crawled inside the big box lying on its side and curled up in a ball, ready for her nap like a puppy.
Dex smiled at the woman of his dreams, the woman he would spend the rest of her life with. He wrapped his hand around the back of her neck, and as he placed his other palm on Ruby’s back to steady her so she didn’t tumble away, he brought Crystal’s mouth down to his and kissed her with all the love overflowing a heart he once thought made of cold, hard emptiness.
