“That information is classified ‘Top Secret’ by the U.S. Government.” He looked out the window. “So I’ll be sticking around Ramsden for a while longer. She knows where I am now. She’ll be back. There’s some good in her, Nate. I know there is.”
After what she’d done to Hattie, Nate figured it would take a miracle for Cadwell to find the good in her, or to figure out that there wasn’t any. Either way, Nate had some advice to offer. “In the meantime, if you need to wear a disguise again, you might want to consider…”
Cadwell smirked. “Something less lacy?”
“Or at least something that matches your hat.”
“I will take that under consideration,” Cadwell said.
“Oh, and one more thing.” Nate paused. “Are Hattie and I really married, or do I have to rely on Common Law?”
Cadwell put a steady hand on Nate’s shoulder. “You can enjoy your wedding night fully assured that I am indeed an ordained minister.”
Nate and Cadwell walked outside where Nate rejoined Hattie, and, with a well-timed stumble, Cadwell turned back into Reverend Everton.
Zachariah shook Nate’s hand and kissed Hattie on the cheek. “Congratulations to the both of you. And congratulations to you, Nate, on the new job. A lot of people in this town will be happy to put Tilly out of business.”
When Nate had called the bank to tell them he was quitting, they decided to build a bank in Ramsden. Apparently, Nate was very good at what he did.
He held Hattie by the waist and pulled her closer. “Thank you, Zachariah. I’m hoping to make a difference in this town.”
“It looks like you already have.” With a pat on the back, Zachariah left, and the cleaning lady squeezed between Nate and Hattie and held each by the hand.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am for the two of you. My dear Nathan. My little sister’s baby girl.” Her eyes sparkled. “Who but the Lord could have done that.”
