Marigold tried to scream, but the sound stuck in her throat.
“I’m sorry,” murmured Polaris. “I cannot defend Berrin if it means abandoning you. He would never forgive me.”
Tears welled in her eyes as she watched the wizards guide Berrin to the back of the Sheriff’s carriage. She didn’t understand what he had done wrong. She-dragons were allowed to mate with a family of brothers. Polaris lifted her off her feet, and her heart shattered. Technically, Polaris was betrothed to Princess Snowdrop, so couldn’t be considered as her mate. Maybe a haremage could only exist if she mated with all of the brothers.
“My carriage seems to have caught fire,” said Governor Hertz. “Could you give me a ride back to the ball?”
“You can sit next to the prisoner,” said the High Sheriff.
Governor Hertz grinned, but it was an ugly, predatory expression. “Splendid. I look forward to becoming better acquainted with my youngest nephew.”
