A white light caught his attention, it was the bus. I don’t think I ever saw a man run that fast, there was something about him that night which would have put Usain to shame. The bus overtook him. It was now at the bus stop but he could see all three of them.
“Wait!” he yelled.
All three of them stayed. Kate, because she was hopeful. Emma, because she was curious and Ron stayed because he just wanted to rub in her face the fact that he was going to be right.
He was out of breath when he reached them. He panted and could barely speak; he was wheezing.
“Jesus Christ, are you okay, dude?” asked Ron, picking him up.
“I’m fine… just need to talk… to Kate.”
Kraig straightened up but couldn’t look her in the eyes. He didn’t even know where to start, he looked at her feet.
Ron gave Emma a smug look and grabbed her hand.
“Come on, there’s another bus stop nearby,” he said.
He grabbed her hand and put the money in her palm, “I just wanted to give you your money back. I don’t want it, keep it.”
“You ran all this way just to give me my money?” she asked, God, you’re still adorable when you’re an idiotic asshole.
It was just him, Kraig and Kate.
“No, no, God, I’m such a fucking idiot.” He shook his head in disbelief. “I’m sorry. I fucked up.”
“It’s fine, you don’t have to apologise.”
“No, Kate, it’s not… Look, I like you, a lot, and I’m sorry if I lead you on, I was just scared of being hurt and… I don’t know what it was but I was just scared and I just, I don’t know what to say.”
He looked up at her face, a bit of her hair was sticking out from her beanie, his scarf wrapped around her neck. What happened next was either weird or romantic; he thought it was romantic (he watched too many rom-coms).
He pulled her closer by her (his) scarf, put a hand on her cheek and for the first time, he kissed her. Really kissed her. She held the kiss for a bit, before pushing him back.
“No,” she said, “You don’t just mess everything up then expect a kiss to fix it.”
“Oh, I’m…” he didn’t know what to say, so he just gave her his back and began to walk away.
“But,” he turned around and saw her smile, “some hot chocolate will.”
His smile almost reached his forehead.
“So what do we do now? Are we a thing? Do we go to weddings together or something? I’m not really good at this,” said Kate, taking a sip of the hot chocolate Kraig made her.
“Fuck, if I know.”
“Want to play some Mario Kart while we cuddle?”
“You know, thank God hot chocolate cures broken hearts,” he laughed.
And in case you’re wondering, he finally wrote a story about the first part of his life he didn’t consider boring.
