Patriots Awakening Page 38

by R. M. Strauhs

Stephan knew that so many of the people who had taken part in the rebuilding were gone now. The important part of rebuilding, like those he worked with, along with the President and Uncle Russell, must not be forgotten. He compared the re-builders to the early patriots who first forged our country into a republic. As they sat having an ice cream cone, which Suzy had conned him into with her cute little voice and smile, Stephan couldn’t help but feel all the sacrifice had been worth it. His beloved wife, Susan, had succumbed to a deadly plague while treating others and saving lives. She was only forty-six, and he somehow felt guilty about remaining so long after her death.

After dropping Suzy at home, Stephan sat on the familiar rear porch, the nearly constant cup of coffee in his hand and watched the birds crowding around the feeders. The beauty of the place always made him smile because Susan had loved it so much. And he always thought about the struggle to rebuild and what a wonderful country he once again lived in. But, in the back of his mind, he also often wondered if such a tyrant as Jarmain Euclaid could ever arise again to destroy all they had worked so hard for.

Author’s Note: This novel was written in the spring of 2001. Our country was hit with horror on September 11, 2001. That terrorist attack changed our thinking and some of our laws. The Department of Homeland Security was set up. Katrina and other hurricanes hit our coastal cities and wiped out life and property. FEMA was a failure when it came to a major catastrophe. Many people learned a hard lesson: The government cannot be depended on to help the people in a large-scale disaster, and being prepared is the best line of defense. Sad to say, many people have not learned that lesson.

I dedicate this book to all the men and women who fight to keep our beautiful country free.
